  Good point!

  Isn’t it stupidly ridiculous that a youngster, or legal minor, could actually end up being disfellowshipped and shunned by their own family just for attending a birthday party, throwing rice at a wedding, clinking glasses, saying “good luck,” etc., etc. . . . . And yet the so-called mature elder who raped the sh^t out of him/her whilst no other witnesses were present might actually not get either disfellowshipped, removed, or reproved and might very well be giving a Sunday talk at a congregation near you (or maybe even the annual Memorial talk, for Christ’s sake!).

  The name “Jehovah” was invented by a Catholic Dominican monk, Raymundus Martini, in 1270.

  So, inserting it into the Old (Hebrew) Testament in the New World Translation is one thing, but I think what people would really take exception to is the fact that the New World Translation has arbitrarily inserted it into the New (Greek) Testament 237 times! Obviously no one alive in the first century would possibly have heard about this new name “Jehovah,” a Catholic invention, which is really a Latin transliteration.

  Furthermore, the monotonous duplication of the footnote for every occurrence of pronouns such as “he,” “him,” “them,” and “they” stating that it supposedly means “his” soul, “their” souls, etc. It looks quite cultic the way they hammer that point in such ridiculous repetition.

  Our new yearly "regional convention"

  so unstuck and myself have decided to attend a different kind of yearly convention!.

  it should be fun!.

  just think, anything that helps us using our "powers of reason" (romans 12:1) is approved by the bible isn't it??

  A skeptics meeting like that is excellent for anybody to attend to learn and understand the merits of objective critical thinking and investigation!

  If everyone went to that regional convention before going to the JW regional convention afterward, I would suspect that there would end up being hardly anyone attending the JW convention after attending the skeptics convention.

  Although skeptical, critical reasoning events are certainly very good in a general sense, I think that people affected by a specific exposure to non-critical thinking outfits such as the JWs should still seek out and attend meeting groups specifically tailored and relevant to that particular shared experience; i.e., meet-ups and “apostafests” with former or questioning JWs. Us folks with that very specific background need all the camaraderie and support we can find!

  is jehovah really a loving and compassionate "father" to his children?

  as a jw i would have definitely answered "yes", followed by the typical "he allows suffering, but doesn't cause it", or perhaps the "he has created us to enjoy life and wants us to be happy" mumbo jumbo.

  Well, I have one better than all of that: I believe that everything happens simply because it can. That’s it! There’s no “love,” or any such else. Things happen because they simply couldn’t not happen.

  we all know the rate of suicide is high among jw's.

  my question is this- was there some subliminal messages that encourage this.

  i was a born in and my entire life i would have these thoughts that could come out of nowhere,"kill yourself.

  Boy, I can relate to that! My dad has scared me about sinning against the holy spirit (thus my user name) since I was about eight years old. My dad would keep telling me: “Wait until Armageddon. Then you’ll really be shaking in your boots!”

  Between that and those disgustingly horrible sketches in the big old orange-coloured book “From Paradise Lost to Paradise Regained” depicting even little children and their pet cats falling into scary-looking abysses opening up in the earth, I can certainly now see how that is the worst kind of child abuse, or soul raping, of those most vulnerable. Disgusting, indeed!

  It’s not just a matter of whether or not an area is religious or how much, but, more importantly I think, it’s a matter of exactly what type of religion; i.e., orthodox/fundamentalist, radical/extremist, high-control, exclusive or inclusive, mainstream, progressive, etc.

  Jehovah's people are not happy people

  i finally stopped attending the meetings about 4 months go.

  i won't be going back - ever.. but i've decided the best reply to the watchtower is to be happy and i do try to be happy every day even thought i wasted my entire life on this religion.

  i cherish every day, practice mindfulness and do my best to be content with the life i have.. it is only now that i see that most jws i know are deeply unhappy people.

  Boy, I can relate to that! You see, I was effectively on “death row” from about 14 years old until my late 30s. I thought internally that I had probably sinned against the holy spirit, as my longtime elder father would occasionally scare me about that. (Thus my user name, “SAHS,” which stands for “Sinned Against the Holy Spirit.”)

  Talk about being – or not being – “good enough”! Every time my mom would verbally speculate about world events possibly fulfilling the “cry of peace and security,” I would almost have a panick attack!

  Once a few years ago when I went downstairs in my old kingdom hall to the second school (back when they had the Kingdom Ministry School), there were two sisters giving a talk on sinning against the holy spirit. Well, I had a panick attack and actually had to go and sit on the toilet for a while!

  I used to even have reoccurring nightmares about a dark storm system steadily approaching from a distance, which included multiple tornados.

  So, I totally relate to “worrying that I'm not good enough and if I didn't do better God would kill me.”

  Not to mention those very graphic sketches depicting Armageddon in the old book Paradise Lost to Paradise Regained. (Boy, talk about organizational child abuse!)

  Can the GB be directed by Holy Spirit and at the same time be not inspired ?

  yes god directs our writings but they're not inspired, so gods directions are staggered and overlapping , so the genuine innocent believing jw has a wonderful life of overlapping bullshit.

  so next time you meet a jw priest ask them what is the difference between being directed and inspired, then i promise you will hear first hand an example of overlapping bull..

  It really seems to be a case of “selective inspiration,” in that, just like “selective hearing,” it is a matter of subjective convenience.

  The GB’s “connection” to the holy spirit is kind of like a semiconductor microchip in that the circuits on the silicon wafer can be conductors or non-conductors of current depending on its chemical properties using a method called “doping.” In the same way, the GB can be inspired or non-inspired – conductors of the holy spirit or not – by another method of “doping” – that is, using a bunch of dopes to comprise a GB which selectively purports to be inspired whenever it is convenient! (I.e., “inspired” whenever they seem to be believable, and then just imperfect and non-inspired when otherwise – which is really by far most of the time.)
