Welcome Peppermint!
Not sure how normal I am but thanks all the same!
just registered today after many months of being a silent spectator, hope to tell you a bit about myself in the days/weeks to come, but not just yet.
one step at a time as they say.
i have been helped so much by what i have read here, at first i expected to find bitter and twisted rantings, not so, you all seem very normal.

i have been watching a couple of the movies retelling the life of christ and i was wondering about the words jesus said to the criminal who asked him to remember him.. the king james version reads: and jesus said unto him, "verily i say unto thee, today shalt thou be with me in paradise" luke 23:43. the new world translation reads: and he said to him "truly i tell you today, you will be with me in paradise.
" luke 23:43. the movie i was watching quoted or at least was closer to the king james version.
maybe i am wrong but the same scriptures seem to imply two different things.
One very obvious thing to say (which has not yet been said in this thread, unless I missed it) is that the whole episode is sheer Lukan creation. Luke embroiders the Markan account about both thieves insulting Jesus so as to make one of them a kind of "repentant sinner" as he loves them. Saying "first they both insulted him, eventually one of them repented (and Luke is the only one to know about it)" is a desperate attempt at harmonization of divergent stories which were never meant to be read together... (I also remember the WT once mentioned "four thieves", so as to have two insulting him as in Matthew-Mark and still another one in Paradise. Silly as it may seem, I have recently heard the same idea from a Pentecostal pastor)...
Peacefulpete: this time I find your chronology very conservative!
when the pearl jam single i am mine came out a little over a year ago, i was still a witness.
it's easy to see why the lyrics appealed to me at a time when i was subconsciously trying to free myself from the mind control.. i know that i was born and i know that i?ll die.. the in between is mine.. i am mine.. .... we?re different behind the eyes, there?s no need to hide .
.... the sorrow grows bigger when the sorrow's denied.. i only know my mind.. i am mine.. freedom has been a gradual process.
Congrats Daniel! Btw, will your avatar turn round?

Hello LT,
There are, in fact, only 3 occurrences of the word in the N.T.: Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 12:4; Revelation 2:7. In 2 Corinthians the "paradise" is identified to the "third heaven" (v. 2), which corresponds to the Greek Apocalypse of Baruch (which is probably a bit later but independent).
About the comma in Luke 23:43, the best parallel is 22:34 (// Mark 22:30) where no ambiguity is possible and the "today" is definitely on the side of what is being said (not the time it's being said).
on monday at 2 pm, my grandmother peacefully passed away at the age of 100. .
her last words was when she was straining to see something that we couldn't see and she said, "roy???
" (my grandfather) and then she said, "mom???
Condolences (((Yizuman))).
Everything past has really been, and still is.
Take care,
Narkissos

I often thought Qoheleth-Ecclesiastes is one of closest texts we have to the 1st-century Sadducees' view...
ok, granted i am a newly-transplanted californian to portland....so maybe not a big deal to most.. but i'm told this is unusual for portland....snow has been falling all morning, there are about 3 inches now...it is a soft, feathery dry snow.
i've already been for a few walks ... it is so quiet and muted out especially for a city.
people are out walking (can't drive!
Hello Bisous,
In the Paris area it has been snowing all day, and this seldom happens (as the song goes, Paris mostly drizzles in the winter...). Tomorrow nothing will be left, since it is not cold enough. But we (especially my 7 y.o. daughter) enjoyed it all day long...
Happy new year to you and everybody (O.K., i wrote that already).
.
happy new year everyone!!
i hope we alll have a safe and fun evening.
Happy New Year everybody!
they're saying the prophecy is possibly fulfilled of "peace and security and then sudden destruction" in the year 1986 when world leaders dubbed that year as the "year of peace".
the feb.1st watchtower mentions that just as a pregnant woman over 9 months gradually has signs of a baby's growth in the womb, so too, we may have a fulfillment of bible prophecy without knowing it fully beforehand until the effects and results become obvious.
my mother read excerpts of the wt.
Incredible. My impression when I read WT literature on this site, after nearly 18 years, is that it is even worse than before: I wouldn't have thought it possible.
It's apparent that the writers don't even bother to look up the Bible texts they quote in their context, and that they don't expect their readers to do so.
What is most obvious in the N.T. eschatological texts is their contradictions. In some texts (e.g. 2 Timothy 3) the evil in the world is supposed to be a sign of the end, in other texts (e.g. 1 Thessalonians 5) there is definitely no sign and the end comes unexpected, as a thief, when everything seems to be all right (hence the "peace and security", which is everything but a "sign"). The synoptic eschatological discourse is a very peculiar mix-up of both scenarii (you will see wars, earthquakes... but it is not the end yet). And 1 Thessalonians 5 is directly contradicted by (probably post-pauline) 2 Thessalonians 2 (the end is NOT for now, because the great evil hasn't come yet). Modern-day fundamentalists use verses from every kind of text to build their own scenarii, not realizing that the only common point of these texts is the evidence they give for the false expectations of early christianity...
