I know, the green one looks a little bit like a leprechaun to me. Best watched while eating Lucky Charms cereal.

I'm sick of being mistaken for a prostitute!
by Aztec inthis has happened far too many times now for it to just be happenstance.
over the last year or so i've had at least 10 guys try to "pick me up" while i am out walking.
if it only happened at night it would be one thing but, it's happened early in the morning as well.

It seems like I get more catcalls when I'm dressed crappily than when I'm dressed up.
I haven't yet figured out if the best way to deal with it is to ignore them or to tell them to f**k off! I feel like ignoring them is best, since it doesn't even justify their behavior.

Embarassing moments you witnessed?
by starfish422 in.
not yours; but those of others you had the good fortune to watch happen.
my favourite is the time we had the co and his wife for lunch after field service, and my mum swore in front of them.

I was out in service with a group, one of whom was this older nutjob of a sister. We rang the doorbell to a house, who said they were not interested. As we left their front walk, the sister stopped, turned around, and vomited in their bushes. Everyone else in the group just kept going. I stayed to ask if she was okay, at which point she told me that "sometimes I just throw up for no reason". O-kaaaay...
I also remember being invited to a Witness dinner by a sister who was known to be schitzophrenic. She had the television on and was watching Lawrence Welk. She kept talking about what a wonderful man he was and how she'd like to meet him. Of course, he was already dead and those were reruns. Then, someone mentioned cats. Another sister started shaking her head and tried to change the subject. Too late. This sister thought that cats were posessed by Satan. The whole dinner took a huge turn for the worse, but I just ate my meatloaf. For a wacko, she was a pretty good cook.

I was allowed to watch "The Snorks", which were considered sort of second-rate smurfs. I even had a Snorks winter hat.
Smurfs were little demons, but the Snorks were perfectly A-OK. Go figure.

Have you tried to explain?
by anglise inhave you ever tried to explain to someone who has no religious leaning how you once truly believed that you could live forever and that now you are no longer a jw that certainty is gone, and how hard that is to deal with at times?.
the look of disbelief and pity that you get in return.. maybe thats partly why we need to talk so often to other xjw's.
whats been your experiences.. anglise

It's embarassing to me because I feel like I believed it past the age when it really should have been acceptable. Sometimes I lie and say that I got out a little earlier than I did.
But I want people to understand that ANYONE who was raised in the same situation that I (we) were would have believed it too. That's what I want people to know, that we all are just a creation of our circumstances. I don't want to be embarassed of my past because it wasn't my fault. I don't believe it any more, and that's what's important.
All I know is that I was very lucky to find this board. It's important to talk to people who already understand without any extra explanations.
I realize that in writing the words "It wasn't my fault", I actually had a twinge of doubt. Yeah, I need therapy...

I SHOCKED MY HUSBAND
by free will inwell, i thought this too funny afterward.
- i answered my hubby's comment with "for christ's sake".
his immediate response was - wow- i never heard you talk that way before.

I think it's more immature to think that some god will disapprove of you for a random sound you choose to form with your mouth in order to communicate an interior feeling with another human. It's the principle behind it.

I would venture to say that indifference is easier, and indifference fuels hatred.
I would like to be idealistic and say that "good" will triumph over "evil" in the end, but looking back into history it's just the big guys with big weapons and raw emotions that always win. This is fueled by a bunch people who don't care enough to make it stop, or feel powerless to make it stop. We slaughter Natives and call it progress and Darwinism. There's some kind of unwritten rule that if you can't defend yourself, you don't deserve to win. And love cannot defend itself.
This war in Iraq made me realize that old money, old men, and new guns have and will continue to do whatever they want. And people will just accept disinformation because it's easier. Just like being a JW.
Hey, it'd be really easy to explain this all away by saying "Satan has been cast down to the earth", wouldn't it?

Do you have obsessive/compulsive disorder?
by kyria inconsidering the way the jw's constantly tell you that you're not good enough, i wondered how many people here suffered from ocd?
i guess you would have to be raised in the truth for this to really affect you.
i struggled with this until i was in my early 20's.

Personally, I just decided that I couldn't deal with it anymore because it was taking over my life so I forced myself to stop. However, I did it without medication (which was NOT easy), so, although it is chemical, I always wondered how much our environment affects the chemical makeup of our brains.
I dunno, I was just curious... maybe it was just me :)

I struggled with this until I was in my early 20's. It could just be genetic, but I'm curious as to who else has this...
