Apognophos-- I really am out of the loop... perhaps that is best. ;)
Yikes.
really: "in actual fact, as opposed to what is said or imagined to be true or possible".
that is the definition..... now, if this book, as others posters have mentioned, is going to be updated to reflect "new doctrinal changes" then the book should be rejected on its lack of merit.

Yikes.
so i have been told that all kingdom halls are to have a large jw.org sign placed prominently out the front..... can anyone confirm this?.
Hmm. Much has changed since I left in the '90's.
The jw.borg signage is clearly up at the kh down the road from my office. I assumed it was the hip 'n happenin' thing those crazy jdubs were doing these days. Always trying to make themselves special.
So... isn't this the trend now, or is there un-borg-like behavior amongst the masses?
...as we were enjoying our weekly sunday "no meetings margaritas.. my friend and i have been meeting for lunch and margaritas ( okay mostly margaritas, we throw lunch in so we dont feel like alcoholics lol ??).
instead of going to meetings.. ( we discovered we could have lunch*margaritas* without the meeting first.).
my jw lady friend still goes out "in service" and stays in touch with her "service buddies" who also know me.. so she was telling me that they asked about me and mentioned that they would like to stop by to see me.
... my above rambling point being, Kudos to you MissFit!

Those margaritas aren't going to drink themselves!
The guilt and shame of the fade-and-exit... I remember it well. I'm going to assume it's connected to our innate social need as human beings, and for all of us who've left (17+ years ago for me!) and came out on the other side, more content and fulfilled having done so-- the pain of leaving pales in comparison to regaining freedom and logic and peace.
Every birthday is enjoyed, every margarita is relished. Life is appreciated and no longer dreaded.

SoP-- are you talking about the new NWT (as opposed to the old NWT... )?
I'm completely out of the loop on this version, having been out for years. Could you give examples of the doctrinal changes the WTS deems necessary to change their holy book?
i havent been going door to door saturday mornings for since i can't remember when.
i have been putting in regular reports to the congregation but the last time i actually went on a door was probably six months ago or so and it has been at least 2 years since i did a saturday morning.
9:30 we showed up to the group arrangement, we waited outside because we were not sure that it was the right place.
MissFit-- getting caught up on the gossip was all being stuck in a car/minivan all day with people you didn't trust was about. :)
Ugh. I don't miss a minute of it. Feel terrible for the kids who are stuck in it with no choice, until of course they feel full-on rebellion is their only option out.
it's no secret that the wtbts has a cash flow problem.
over the past three years they have closed 20 of their 116 branches.
they have sold off most of their properties in and around ny (including some kingdom halls), drastically reduced the # of printed pages for the watchtower and awake magazines, reduced the printing of books and other materials, increased the number of single page tract campagnes, installed cc machines at their assembly halls, and are now seizing of controll of property assets from local kingdom halls using renovation projects.
Thanks Phizzy! Good to be here.
It's the dyed-in-the-wool types that puzzle me so much. Unquestioning, unfailing loyalty... exactly what they'd accuse dyed-in-the-wool Catholics, worshipping their Pope! I recently ran into the lady that converted our family back in the mid-80's and she was clearly dressed for FM. Since she felt the need to chat, I asked her if she was on a break. She said yes and laughed nervously, as if it's still a subconscious embarrassment to do what she was doing.
I felt that way as a teenager, but my god, she's in her 60's! If you're not over it by now sweetie...
Ah well! And then she reached out to rub my arm and said it was SO good to see me, with that pre-packaged condescension of an active JW to whatever they've labeled me as. Apparently not DF'd though! I simply smiled wide and said thank you, It's nice to be seen.

good grief.
the more fanatical the religion, the more it seems to lack a sense of self reflective irony.. .
Phizzy-- exactly that. It has always blown my mind that the higher the religiosity, the lower the threshold for humor, joy, gentleness, authenticity. That too is why I love Eddie Izzard's send-up of institutional Christianity: God says to His son, "Jeezy Chreezy." "Don't call me Jeezy Chreezy, Dad!
SoP-- Having a genuine sense of humor as a JW goes over just like flatulence in a kingdom hall. ;)

This may have been mentioned already/elsewhere on this topic, but beecause their anti-wordly stance, I'm assuming they heavily indoctrinate against "too much" internet use, etc.
Which would mean the average faithful JW does not know just how easily available anti-JW education is now. Ways to send them packing from your door, ways to avoid their subtle influence at work, school, etc. Where they once prided themselves on literature printing and saturation, they cannot compete with the WWW. My thought is they don't yet fully grasp how completely irrelevant they've become in the 21st century. If they did, they'd discontinue pioneering in the Western world full stop.

Agreed with everything said above. Also seems to go hand-in-hand with missing chunks of what was once known as Common Sense.
So not only can these people not laugh at themselves, they can't understand why they might need to.
