I seem to recall there was also an edict re the deliberate feeding of bloody food to a pet. But that was 50 years ago!

Shunning: Reasoning With JW's
by The Fall Guy inperhaps this line of questioning could agitate a jw's thinking.
it can't hurt.. you: is shunning a biblical teaching?.
jw: yes.. you: so it must be god's law?.

Years ago, I finished up living next door to JW's. They knew all about me and called to tell me that as I was disfellowshipped, they wouldn't be speaking to me. Oh OK then... So I asked them what it was that I was DF'd for? They said that they didn't know. So then I asked them if they were happy to shun someone even when they didn't know why they had to be shunned? Exit JW's in confusion..

I'm just astonished that the JW fella being harassed in the 9th minute onwards didn't tell his aggressor to fuck off.

Are You Proud of Your Country?
by snugglebunny insome people are of the opinion that it doesn't make any sense to be proud of one's nationality because we had nothing to do with where we were born.
the decision wasn't ours.
they opine that it's ludicrous to be proud of our countries' prior achievements if we had no part in those achievements because we weren't even around then.

I guess there are some things that I admire about my own country as opposed to feeling "proud".
I admire our going it alone in 1939 at the out break of WW2.
I was around in 1966 when we finally realised that no government should have the legal right to kill it's own citizens and did away with capital punishment.
I watched the fleet sail out to the Falklands in 1982. That was quite something.
So yes, I do consider myself fortunate to have been born here. But not proud.

Learning New Words
by compound complex ingreetings, fellow lexophiles:.
last night, i watched a cool road movie, the trip, with steve coogan and rob brydon.
they were counseled by steve's dad to take an "anticlockwise" route home, rather than the clockwise one steve had proposed.

They opine that it's ludicrous to be proud of our countries' prior achievements if we had no part in those achievements because we weren't even around then. Basically we are where we are due to accident of birth.
So I was wondering...If that is the case, then should we also have no part in the apologies that are often made because of the misdoings of our forefathers? I look at the UK's record when it comes to such things as slavery or anti-semitism or the colonising of Africa and India and do feel some degree of shame that the country I love once actually did this stuff. But I don't feel any responsibility for it, so I'm disinclined to join in the apology fests.
Confusing isn't it.

Do You Use Facebook As Much As You Did In The Past?
by minimus init seems that instagram is the new thing.
a lot of my friends use that now and prefer over facebook.
in addition, there is the privacy issue..

I use FB all the time. As a total blabbermouth I fit right in. I still haven't learned how to moan about my aches and pains, nor give dire warnings to unfriended persons, nor reveal every detail about my personal relationships. But I'm willing to learn.

Beard update
by Coded Logic inso it's been over a month since i decided to grow a beard.
the mustache and chin have come in fuller than i ever imagined - while the cheeks leave me wondering if i'll ever grow enough hair to make it not look so wildly unkept and patchy (if anyone has any advice here it'd be much appreciated).
but in the mean time i'll give it another month and see how it goes.. .
