Demon Stories
by humblepotato inso we all know that "crazy" brother or sister.
every kingdom hall has one.
they give the best comments (from a hilarious perspective), have experiences with the "demons", but most importantly, they are on about 10 deifferent kinds of medications.

I heard so many demon stories when I was in the organization. Honestly, I have never seen or heard or felt anything even remotely supernatural in my life and I have certainly done things to invite them in. There was always some brother or sister in the hall that swore up and down they had a certain experience with demons. I always knew they had a few screws loose even though the belief in demon attacks, etc was sanctioned by the org. I remember one woman in our hall. At the book study one night I asked her husband how they were doing. He said that he and his wife had been up the whole night before as demons were attacking his wife. And then he said they had found the culprit. A "Sonic the Hedgehog" poster in his daughter's room. I asked him on what basis they felt this cartoon was a problem, of course he wasn't sure but he knew it was the reason. All of these "experiences" can be explained easily, usually hysteria or simple hearsay (a story being retold and embellished on). Reason and rationale are not trademarks of the JW's. -

John Denver hates JW's
by problemaddict 2 ini remember this making the rounds and people swearing by it.

Yes, the John Denver urban legend was a firmly held belief for decades. I was also criticized for listening to Stevie Nicks because she was definitely a witch, someone knew it to be a fact. Seriously! -

Sorry, But Your Sad Story Doesn't Make Me Feel Better. Is it supposed to?
by Tempest in a Teacup ini have very recently come out of a bout of severe depression which lasted for years.
i have ginormous underlying issues which i hardly talk about, especially to my family.. today my sister came in, wanting to force me to do something she wanted.
her strategy was to make me feel bad for feeling bad, just to show me that my problem (which she has no idea of but thinks she does) wasn't the biggest in the world.

Sometimes when people would confide in me about how they were going through such a hard time, my first instinct was to see if I could relate a story of someone else who had it bad. In my well meaning mind I was thinking it would serve as encouragement that they could get through their hard time too. I often noticed the looks on their faces like I had just made a mistake and now I know why. Someone who's stressed or depressed needs to have their feelings validated and I think it seemed to them that I was dismissing the seriousness of their problems. I've always had a hard time expressing myself. -

In my experience I would say roughly 85%. I rarely shunned anyone when I was in and I didn't care if anyone saw me or not. I can't say the same in their reaction to me however. -

I worked with a bunch of JW's once. One of them was a big time elder, ex-co. We were always at odds because he just couldn't help but push his weight around and taking over everything. We got into a big fight one time and I told him to go Fuck himself. I'll never forget the look on his face. Sheer shock and awe. His lips quivered as he shouted "You can't talk to me like that!" I told him "I just did!" We eventually handled it among ourselves and he never pursued it with the congregation. But it was one of the most truly satisfying moments of my life. -

Are Jehovah's Witnesses Happy?
by minimus ini know of the local congregation's issues, per an elder i know quite well.
he has said that nearly everyone in the congregation is suffering emotionally and mentally.
he said he has never seen so many witnesses with so many problems.

They are constantly reinforcing to each other how bad this world is and how Jehovah will wipe out all the pain and suffering they are experiencing real soon. They don't see anything positive, if they do it's from Satan. It's all that negative, oppressive mental attitude. Nothing is good enough right now. The world is so full of evil. Damn, I'm glad I got out of there. Just thinking about them makes me want to drink. -

Active posters: What education have you had, what degrees do you possess?
by EndofMysteries infrom so many posts and conversations on here, you'd think over 1/2 the posters here possess doctorates in theology, physics, biology, etc.
i'm curious aside from the books and research people have done here, what degrees they have.
to start, i just got an aa and going straight through full time to an mba.

I started college the year I started studying. Was persuaded by the idiots I studied with that it was wrong so I dropped out after one semester. I was 19. At the age of 54 and disfellowshipped I went back and got my Bachelor's degree. Better late than never. Although I don't have anything to be bitter about, my Dad was not a witness and he gave me a great start in my career when I was 23. -

If The Witnesses Try To Get You Back To Jehovah...How Will You Respond!
by minimus ini am most curious.

I will be very angry. I will tell them I have no desire to have anything else to ever do with them and that since leaving their asshole organization I have never been happier. I will then remind them that they are the ones that follow the shunning doctrine so leave me the fuck alone! -

Inactive ones are not JWs
by gone for good inyears ago, the insinuation was often presented, that those who were inactive were actually not witnesses at all.
the point being made was that ''...winesses is a verb, not a noun...''.
i know there were published assertions to this end in the older books and magazines, with possibly even quotes from the likes of rutherford or knorr ,.

My wife and I were inactive with very minor meeting attendance for a while some years ago. It was only through my wife's friendship with an elders wife from a previous congregation that we were reactivated. We had an elder call on us from time to time usually when he knew we wouldn't be at home. His wife told my wife's friend that because we were inactive they couldn't do anything to help us and we were basically in the world unless we reactivated ourselves. At the time I wrote it off as this elder and his wife just being assholes.
