My brother died last night
by LisaRose ini found out this morning that my brother died last night, he was also an ex jw, 73 years old and died of heart disease and kidney failure.
it was not totally unexpected, as he had been in poor health, but it's a blow, especially as i just lost another brother two years ago.
there were six of us, now only four.

Leaving the JW's is like a game of Poker....
by Turquoisepeace inleaving the religion can be likened to a game of poker.
many possible scenarios can be played out during the game and the potential loss or gains are many:.
you have put too many chips in, every round it just seems you will win it all in the end.

I think that witnesses use too much "illustrations"... I found yours in this case a good one... But life is different, you don't Win or Lose... You just experience things, I believe that every experience good or bad (being inside the "Brooklyn cult") is a lesson... I'm thankful of life, even being a born-in...
Sometimes I found myself trying to break the old habit Of relying too much on "illustrations" to make my points in conversations...

Spanish talking people who immigrated to the USA it's probably well work focus and had a concept of hard working as a key to future and obviously they want their descendants to do better than they... Here in Chile I met a guy who lived and worked in the USA and 20 years later he came back to Chile. Well he wanted her 18 daughter to study in the university here, and he was a uber-JW... That girl went back to the us, now has a girlfriend (ha ha obviously she's out the Jws) and it's working hard to progress in professional life (she didn't make it to university here in Chile, where admission tests and requirements are sometimes very high for the traditional and best universities), so she did it her own way out of the wt even "following" indirectly the wt adviceĀ -

Story of God - Morgan Freeman
by Doubtfully Yours ini'm hooked on watching "the story of god, with morgan freeman".
it's fascinating to watch the different faiths throughout the world, the rituals, how devout the followers are.
mind boggling for sure!

I know for sure that if god exists, he may be Morgan Freeman in a white suit... -

by neat blue dog inreading the recent thread about first talks reminded me of when i was new on the school.. i was around 8 and had to read the chapter that mentions 'sucking king's breasts'.
we got there late and somebody else was giving it.
boy was i secretly relieved.

That little drunk bastard, Lot, getting laid by his daughters... Mom has very hard times trying to explain what was happening there... Her explanation was something about "the need for populating"... -

Waking up - introduction
by Dreamerdude ini am a male, born into the jw cult(ure), baptized as a teen, now mid fifties.
most of my life i dreamed of hugging pandas and lions, punctuated at times by nightmares of armageddon or jw drama and politics.
still going through the motions for still-in wife.

What was your first public bible reading? And when?
by Mandrake ini perfectly remember that, rehearsing with mom, trying to read with enough emphasis and in a proper tone.
i was 5 years old, back then in 1996 i think, and the portion was james 5:1-13.... i found today that i still know the first verses by heart!!!
it's actually a cherished memory for me, i came to memorize those because mom had me starting the reading all over again until i got to read it properly... and in time!!!

I also presented an "experience"
at an assembly, I was maybe 16 by the time (now 25)... Now I look behind it all and it's so weird...
and about public readings, I just remembered the sound of the podium getting adjusted for my height... That sound is along in my memory with the anxiety of being seated in the front row just waiting for my name to be announced!
