  I think you are confusing people being civil and not bigoted or misogynistic (or whatever) with what most people think of as "stupid political correctness" which is when it's gone overboard and used to try and silence people or just ruin someone else's time.

  I don't think I am confusing the two, Simon. It is all part of the same package.

  You give the example of "...it's also politically incorrect to say happy christmas to people when it's intended with no malice or insult." This example just highlights the ignorance of those who believe that their intentions are exemplary and because of that, that their actions are justifiable regardless of how those actions effect anyone else. It reminds me of someone who drives a transport truck through my garden because it is the shortest route for them and then says "...oh, but I didn't mean to kill your garden! I was trying to miss the potatoes and I didn't hit the peas! Be grateful for small mercies..."

  So what if no malice is intended? It is the consequences to others that are important. Political correctness isn't about you...it is about the ones who are marginalized/silenced by dominant culture.

  I wasn't going to post anymore on this thread because whatever I say seems to be redundant...however....

  Looter, you are absolutely right that I don't understand things the same as you. I do not understand rationality/irrationality as being beliefs like you do.

  Belief is a concept that is separate but still related to rationality/irrationality. The process of believing is based upon those two concepts of rationality/irrationality...but belief itself is not the same thing.

  You can have a belief that is based upon rational thinking but that does not make the act of choosing belief a rational one. Choosing belief is an irrational act - our brain would like to deceive itself into thinking that the belief itself is rational - because it is based upon a logical, rational workup to that place of decision (whether to believe or not), but that final leap of faith - that choice to believe - is in and of itself, an irrational act.

  Belief is not necessary when proof is available. Therefore, belief is always about what cannot be proven. Ergo...the need for the irrational mind to justify the acceptance of what cannot be proven. And the brain uses the rational part of itself to do just that.

  Political correctness causes discomfort in the privileged classes.

  Sure...go ahead and dump political correctness. It is one of the least understood social concepts of its time and the claims that it has out served its purpose may be valid.

  What do we replace it with? Or, do we not replace it and just try to maintain the status quo so that people of privilege can maintain their comfort level?

  Okay...no more 'political correctness'. Back to the 60s it is...one step forward and two back. Typical of the human species - fearful of any change that can be perceived as threatening their social status. It is a wonder that we have survived this long

  Damn, I wish they would hurry up with that space exploration stuff. We need a new planet so that those of privilege, who own this planet, can stay here and all of us who support the rights of marganilized people can go to a new one. Send us off to space to re-start this pitiful human species. You can have this damned earth

  Some knowledge of the scientific method as I've been to school, OrphanCrow. I understand what it means but I'm saying that it was created by someone based on the way they saw life which is the application of belief.

  I would like to suggest that you brush up a bit on that then because it is obvious from your responses that you do not understand the principles that underpin the scientific method. Or the concept of belief.

  It may be helpful at some time to take an introductory course in scientific methodology if you ever get the opportunity.

  Good luck. Keep searching but, please...keep an open mind and use it to its best ability. Rationality and irrationality are both important in life in order to fully experience being human. It is helpful, though, to understand the difference.

  Oh, and the scientific method itself uses a belief system. Now I'm not saying it is a belief system but it applies a belief system which is about how certain people see the world, which again is different for everyone.

  Huh?

  What is your knowledge of the scientific method? Do you understand what it entails?

  Do you understand the concepts of validity and reliability as they apply to the scientific method?

  Firstly, I would recommend that you learn the art of speaking for yourself and yourself only. "We both just need" is an inappropriate phrase because you simply don't know my needs. You may need to remember that but I don't.

  That aside, I will try to make myself clearer.

  Belief is ALL about the irrational.

  The scientific method does not require belief. It requires an adherence to basic principles that govern the scientific process. If those principles (rules) have been followed, science does not require belief. Science requires rationality.

  Belief requires irrationality. It is the irrational mind that is satisfied emotionally through the process of believing. The brain would like to 'believe' that its belief is based upon rationality...but it simply isn't

  Looter, I think we are coming from different places when discussing rationality and irrationality.

  I am approaching irrationality as the brain's emotional response as opposed to a logical response. I think of it in terms of rightbrain/leftbrain functioning.

  Belief springs from the brain's desire to fulfill its emotional needs (right brain). Logic springs from the left brain's need to be organized and rational - it is concerned with the detail of the material world - the right brain likes a big picture way of perceiving the world. The right brain speaks through emotion - the left brain speaks through the rationality of language.

  Belief satisfies our emotional need to stay connected to the material world

  Yes. It certainly is a different way of thinking.

  The difference between rationality and irrationality is that rationality does not require belief.

  Think of it this way - it is like going to watch a movie. Our rational minds know that the images, music, plot, characters on the screen are fictitious. In order to engage in the experience of being entertained by the movie, the spectators have to suspend their disbelief.

  That is what makes a rational person into a "believer" - the suspension of their disbelief. And that is a conscious choice
