Suburban megachurch expanding into downtown with big purchase
A historic church building at the corner of 12th and Delaware streets has been purchased by a large congregation expanding into the downtown area.Traders Point Christian Church in Whitestown is spending $2 million to renovate the 35,300-square-foot structure and should have it ready for worship early next year, Rev. James Stanley said.
The neoclassical, limestone building has been used as a place of worship since it was built in 1912 and had been owned by The Jehovah’s Witnesses since 1978.
The location at 1201 N. Delaware St., across from the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, will be the third for Traders Point. The congregation turned to downtown following its entrance into Carmel in January and quickly homed in on the Jehovah’s facility.
“We could not believe the pristine, well-maintained condition of the building,” Stanley said. “It was like everyone’s jaw dropped, with a building that old, how well-maintained it had been.”
The building includes a 1,200-seat auditorium renovated in 1995. That’s a little larger than what Traders Point needs. But the church likely will reduce the space somewhat to better fit its plans of hosting multiple services at different times.Still, the structure’s overall size meets the congregation’s “prototype of what we’re looking for,” Stanley said.
Interior work will be done to bring the space up to Traders Point standards.
“The biggest portion of renovations will be to make it look like our brand,” he said. “The difference is, it’s got some historic features; we’re trying to respect that.”

**suggestion...this forum should have a section just for all the WT's real estate deals
i’ve been reviewing the scientific claims that the society promoted through the golden age magazine (later replaced by the awake).. each statement comes from an official publication of the wtbts.
while this material goes back many years so do jw’s beliefs that were and still are promoted as the ‘truth’.. a more up to date account of jw science and medicine and many other great topics........ can be found on jwfacts.com.
the science of the watchtower plus an occasional face palm i couldn’t resist.. “color and physiognomy..........a blue nose..... is a symbol of austerity, with perhaps a prudish tinge.....the size of the nose, as also the size of the eyes, is not without significance.
Giordano, the Golden Age magazines are a treasure trove of weird and wacky ideas. The medical advice is pretty much all anti-AMA propaganda and fueled by the abundance of alternative practitioners who supported the WTS
I particularly like this medical advice that appeared in a 1912 Watchtower (their wacky ideas were firmly planted by the time the Golden Age appeared):
CURE FOR APPENDICITIS
It is known that only about three out of every one hundred
operated upon for appendicitis really have a diseased appendix
needing removal. We give below a simple cure for appendicitis
symptoms. The pain in the appendix region is caused by
the biting of worms near the junction of the transverse colon
with the small intestines, low down on the right side of the
abdomen.
This remedy is recommended also for typhoid fever, which
is also a worm disease. The medicine is Santonine: dose, 3
grains, an hour before breakfast; repeated for four mornings,
or until all the symptoms disappear. Then one dose per month
for three months to eradicate all germs.
This recipe is of incalculable value. Not only will it save
the surgeon's and hospital fees of perhaps $200, but it saves
weeks of ill health, inconvenience, convalescence and loss of
salary.
The Watchtower - January 15, 1912
ok, i am reading through the book the watchtower and the masons by fritz spring meier which i am finding a fascinating read; and discovered that judge rutherford published the book 'cause of death'.
what is incredible is the book cover.
the book was published in 1932 which would have been a little bit more eye catching back then.
dropoff: I don't recall this book, are we sure it was WT published? or was it a booklet or tract?
It was a WT published pamphlet.
In 1932, right after the Jehovah's Witness religion was founded in 1931, Rutherford published a series of 12 pamphlets (one each month). All 12 can be downloaded here:
http://wtarchive.svhelden.info/english/books-and-tracts/
The illustrations for all 12 pamphlets are done in the same style
The WT went on to publish many tracts and pamphlets leading up to and during WW2 - they are also available for download at that link*
* "Loyalty", published in 1935, would be an interesting pamphlet to dissect and compare to today's WT writings on loyalty. The 1935 pamphlet focused on the flag salute...I wonder what legal issue they are resisting this time?
wow, this is awesome.
this really shows the jw passiveness towards child sex abusers.
there needs to be more of this exposing this!.
jwgonebad: The fact that this video has been removed demonstrates that the WTBTS cannot take constructive criticism!
Not necessarily
It could also mean that Colorado does not have laws in place that restrict door to door movement of sex offenders.
It could also mean that the action of video taping and then publicly posting the encounter is a violation of what the sex offender registry is in place for. The registry specifically says that vigilante action is not to be undertaken by the public.
Publicly posting the video could be illegal. Chandler could very well have a case that he was being harassed by the posting of the video
I am not saying that I agree...I am saying that such action can be seen as violating the rights of the offender.
However, it would not surprise me if more states are going to pass laws to restrict sex offenders from going door to door. Right now, not many do
something struck me the other day.. elders are told to maintain confidentiality with regard to the details of judicial cases or congregation "discipline" in an attempt to dignify individuals etc.. this is even the case for known child abusers!.
yet, if they suspect someone of being an "apostate", for instance being a member on this forum, they will spread such information far and wide, through the witness "grape vine" to congregations miles away (or even in other countries).
so, does that mean they place more importance on "apostasy" rather than child abuse?.
Stuckinarut, you make a valid point about the difference in how 'sins' are treated by the elders.
They will go to court, and to the ARC, and insist that if someone is found guilty of child abuse in their JC, that they MUST keep that information confidential.
And yet...on the other hand, if someone is found guilty of apostasy in their JC (or maybe even just suspected of that grave sin), they will shout it from the rooftops. They will mark the homes of apostates as DNC and they will prohibit family members from speaking to them.
Child abusers? Neh...even if they are convicted child rapists, they will be groomed for entry into the JWs or re-entry into their cult post-incarceration. They will visit them in jail and even baptize them while in jail. But it is a big no no to warn anyone in the congregation (unless they are the elders' wives and children). Confidentiality, you know
But watch out for those apostates. Gotta warn everybody about them
do any of you know anything about prescription medications and their reactions?
the doctors cannot explain why but i react to everything they prescribe to the point that now all my doctors are attempting neutral remedies before medication.
tomorrow i am having surgery to drill a hole in my head to put in a titanium rod and we are doing local instead of general simply because it lessens the amount of needed drugs.
"So you are mistaken in how you read the post"
I don't think so. I added the human component into my interpretation into how the words were used...not everybody uses the pedantic approach to linguisitic structure at all times

Nellis: You said, "We had to hire a tutor for math because my son and I have no absolute clue how to get the answer to a math problem by solving it we just know what the answer is."
Now I understand that certain people can do some pretty fantastic math calculations in their heads, but you are claiming that you just know answers without solving the problem. Sorry pop, what you are saying is outside of the realm of reality, therefore it is not reality. Shrinks have better names.
You are being pedantic. I read rebel's words to mean that her and her son do not use the methods of equation solving that is taught in school. This is not unusual for some people

Holy crap, rebel...you need a bubble environment
That doesn't sound like fun
the religion of the educated classes revisited: new religions, the nonreligious, and educational levels - james r. lewis .
the measure lewis uses to compare religious groups is what percentage of members of the respective religions have graduated from college.
the findings are similar to the results of the pew survey in the united states.
polish: another question : among the college graduated witnesses, how many have used these years to learn to think by themselves? How many have taken a real benefit of this high education?
I know several young college graduated witnesses who hare absolutely uable to thing by themselves and only repeat what other (and uneducated people) have taught them!
So it's often a waste of time, for a well indocrinated witness to go to college!
Yeah...the old saying of leading a horse to water...
A few years ago, I had an encounter with a young JW woman. She spotted me walking and actually pulled her shiny new car over on the street, got out and approached this "derlelict" (me) walking (poor thing) and dressed in scarves, mitts, Army jacket (it was f***ing cold...I always dress for the weather).
Anyways, I decided to engage her and challenged her on the WT's stance against education (she was shocked...a derelict that can talk? and reason? and is educated???). Her response was interesting.
"Oh, but the WT doesn't forbid higher education. I have been to university!"
"Oh? Really? What is your degree in?"
"Physiotherapy. I have a four year degree. When Jehobah cleans up this earth, which will be soon, he will need people who can heal and work in medicine. Perfection of the body will come slowly and with the help of people like me."
That conversation went well. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?
