Mirlande died on October 3rd, before Eloise did. So many JW women die due to pregnancy complications who never make it into the media.

Wonder: A JW mother or father with minor children should not be allowed to refuse a necessary and available treatment on grounds of public interest. They should be urged by court decision to performed their parental care until the children are 18 and independent.
Anyone who chooses to refuse a life saving procedure in the face of leaving a newborn child behind should be declared mentally incompetent.
Any other kind of phobia - and in the case of the JWs...blood refusal is more of a phobia than anything else - would be treated as a mental disorder and the patient declared not of sound mind.
StarTrekAngel: They should have been in our last assembly where a drama representing a brother consulting elders on this very topic was shown. The elder said "Before I can say yes (to the medical treatment in question), I need to know the details..." (perfect example of elders making medical decisions for a third person)
It is not right that untrained elders put themselves in the position of giving medical advice to pregnant women. Ugh...imagine being a young JW woman and having to discuss your pregnancy with either some old, uneducated elder or some snot nosed 18 year old JW male who just got appointed over you. To have to sit down with them and discuss what your care plans are going to be. About procedures and treatment they know very little about.
Eloise's coercion happened long before she was ever admitted to the hospital. It started here (and even before that with promises of paradise and threats of Armageddon in the children's book):

Also note that these forms do not address any of the risks involved in choosing alternative procedures. Nowhere is a JW woman told of how her blood refusal puts her in one of the highest categories of risk for maternal death or that the recommended/approved procedures are off label use.

A Quebec coroner opened an inquest, but Health Minister Gaetan Barrette said Dupuis made the choice on her own.
"She knew, and she made it clear, that if something was to happen, because of her religion she didn't want any transfusion," he told the CBC.
A former church member describes the committees as "intimidating," but the church defends them. They are "not surrogate decision makers for patients" and are "generally well received in the medical community and recognized as contributing to advances in bloodless medicine and surgery," the church said in a statement.
A spokesman says the church is confident the inquest will show the legal standard for consent was met.I think this is an indication that the inquest isn't going to do much.
The HLC is firmly embedded into the Canadian health care system and they have the backing of the people who are important and have influence: the Quebec Health Minister and the blood(less)/blood management industry.
The WT's HLC has the backing that counts - the community at large is up against decades of bricklaying work that the Watchtower has already laid and that fortification is pretty strong - it goes all the way up to the United Nations.
Of course the org is confident. They have had years and years to prepare for this. This recent blood death is just a blip on the screen...and a reason to watch the stock market for the biotech companies that the bloodless industry supports

again jw.org interprets the law to their behalf.. a group of elders in madrid has sent this letter to ask clarification !!.

Specific risk of the strategy of non-transfusion
It is estimated that non-transfusion strategy adds a mortality risk of 0.5-1.5% to the patient’s own (The American Journal of Medicine, February 1993). This means that for every 100 patients undergoing bloodless surgery strictly, there is one that dies needlessly.
This figure is well above the surgical-anaesthetic risk without the restriction of blood. According to recent statistics (Anaesthesia, 56 (12): 1141-1153) in 10,000 anaesthetics:
There are 8.8 cases of perioperative death
There are 0.5 cases of perioperative coma
There are 1.4 deaths associated with anaesthesia
That is, if the possibility of death or coma is 0.5-8.8 per 10,000 operations, the strategy of non-transfusion-risk places this 50-150/10.000 interventions. This means that the risk is 20-100 times higher.
These statistics have been made in different years, and therefore medical technology may have improved this situation. However, we have not found in medical literature most recent statistics in terms of morbidity and mortality associated with strict non-transfusion strategy.... for every 100 patients undergoing bloodless surgery strictly, there is one that dies needlessly.

I am curious.
Does anybody know at what point the Hospital Information Services get a kickback from this company?
At what point in the distribution network is the HLC involved? This cell saver was trialed on Jehovah's Witness patients - that is an indication of HLC invovlement.
And...are there JWs who profit from this company? Are there JWs invested in Advantis Surgical and/or Brightwake? Does Advantis sponsor any of the JWs who are in the HLC network?

WTS Rich or Hurting for $$$
by Zeds Dead inseen a few discussions asking if the wts are hurting for $$ or still sitting on a mountain of gold.. regardless of their child abuse legal fees and ongoing broadcasting for more dough, i believe they have piles and piles of cash.. talked with a diff'd accountant who sat in the accounting dept.
at the conventions for years.. a football stadium (or the like) costs them about $70 - 90,000 to rent for a 3 day dub show.
they take in $400,000 in donations from the r&f.

Thanks for posting that link, Lee. Excellent article by a well known expert on cults.
This case is drawing a lot of attention. Facebook is pretty active.
I think that the Canadian setting is making a difference - Canada has a public health system so the public is naturally interested. Special treatments demanded by the JWs cost all of Canada extra and the treatment that Eloise did get was expensive. And we are a small country - she was everybody's neighbor.
The blood refusal deaths don't always get media coverage but this one is an example of how much collateral damage occurs when a JW patient enters a hospital with a no blood card. So many others impacted and traumatized. This death was like a physiological and emotional bomb going off that spread its ugly shrapnel everywhere - family, friends, medical staff...the whole country is feeling the pain and wondering why
So many people are horrified by this senseless death of a young mother who had been instilled with a blood phobia from birth.
