Vidiot: In all my time as an active JW, it never once occurred to me that the "bloodless" medical-tech industry might be something that the Org may being quietly profiting from.

Vidiot, I still remember exactly the moment that thought crystallized for me. It horrified and shocked me but at the same time it made total and complete sense.

Everything that I have turned up since that time indicates that the no blood doctrine is a phobia, not a religious belief. And that that phobia against using other people's blood is a profitable position that the Watchtower Society has exploited through their alliances with the bloodless industry.

The Watchtower goes on and on about all the money that is needed for the "worldwide work".

But...the questions that need to be asked and answered:

How much money has the org spent on promoting bloodless technology?

Is the Hospital Information Services part of their "worldwide work"?

Is advocating for and promoting bloodless medicine a religious activity?

And, how is the Hospital Information Services financed? Does that money come from the charitable donations the Watchtower receives?

Who are the largest contributors to the WTS? Do they have interests in keeping the blood doctrine alive...or massaging the blood doctrine to serve the needs of the bloodless industry?

Why has the WTS change their position on using processed blood at exactly the same times that the bloodless industry needed subjects to trial their products on?

Why has the HLC made arrangements for procedures to be used on JW patients and then later...those procedures/products were stopped over safety concerns? Why does the WTS go on and on about the dangers of blood transfusions but NEVER says anything about the dangers that they have exposed the JWs to through experimental bloodless procedures?

Notice this part at the end of the story:

The committees are composed of Jehovah's Witness elders who are dispatched to a hospital when a member is facing a blood transfusion decision.
According to the faith group, their role is to advocate for bloodless medical procedures and ensure their members' wishes are respected.

I think a critical question to answer will be whether the advocacy for bloodless medical procedures is the reason for the HLC's involvement and if those concerns were primary in the HLC's actions. If the HLC were ensuring that the blood refusal was carried out for the reason of promoting alternative procedures, that should raise a huge red flag.

It seems to me that the HLC are walking an ethical tightrope. Whose interests are they really looking out for? The patient's? Or the interests of the bloodless industry that require the JW patients for clinical trials and experimental procedures?

Mirlande Cadet, 46, died of suspected hemorrhage day after giving birth by C-section
A Quebec coroner is investigating the death of a 46-year-old Jehovah's Witness who died Oct. 3 from complications shortly after giving birth by caesarian section in a Montreal hospital.
A spokeswoman for the coroner's office, Geneviève Guilbault, confirmed that the bureau was launching an investigation into Cadet's death in an email to CBC Montreal.
"Based on information that's been circulating … and other information we received from the hospital, it's been decided that a coroner will investigate the death of Mrs. Cadet," Guilbault wrote.
The inquest is the second coroner's investigation this month into the death of a Jehovah's Witness following childbirth in Quebec.

Wonder: I'm just learning the basics and make a clue of it. Hemosep is a blood management procedure.

Hemosep is a device that recently and successfully broke in the market of blood salvage.

Hemosep seems to have taken over a market share from Haemonetics with this machine. Haemonetics has been one of the largest supplier of blood management technologies to this point - they developed one of the first cell savers back in the early 70s.

Hemosep boasts that it is small, easy to transport and use. It is also cost effective making it attractive to places like the Canadian market whose health care system is bolstered with public funds.

However, it also has drawbacks. It can only process one litre of blood at a time*, making it a questionable device for trauma emergencies where a patient loses much more than a litre of blood when they hemorrhage. (*basically, what a Hemosep machine does, is it takes a person's blood and concentrates it and then that concentrated blood is transfused back into the patient. The patient gets all the 'goodies' from their blood without the volume - the volume has already been added to the patient's system with synthetic volume expanders)

At this point, as far as I know, the Hemosep machine has been approved by Health Canada for use in cardiac surgeries and for "other situations". In other words....they will use if for JWs who have no other option than to use the machine for "off-label" use - to try to save their lives when conventional transfusion have been taken off the table as a line of treatment.

I guess time will tell if the Hemosep machine has any safety issues yet to be worked out. It is performing fairly well so far from all indications. But it is a fairly new device that is still, as far as I can tell, in testing stages, especially for procedures other than open heart surgery.

EdenOne: Wasn't a JW involved in the development of the HemoPure mentioned in that article as an accepted product to use with Hemosep?

Are you talking about Hemopure, the bovine based artificial blood?

I have heard a few rumors and Chinese whispers online about JW involvement in the development of various "bloodless" technologies. But little confirmation. I wouldn't be surprised to find a lot of JWs tumble out of the patent office for various bloodless technologies and products.

Heck...if you go back far enough, you will find old Wm. Hudgings in the patent office - for an "asshole flusher". Haha! He invented that device right around the time that the Golden Age was printing all those articles about colon cleansing and hemorrhoids.

JWs involved in the development of bloodless technology? Absolutely believable.

With, of course, the help of the Hospital Liaison Committees. What a loving provision from Jehovah. How wise Jehovah has been to establish those helpful committees. Without the HLC...how would all those loyal followers of Jehovah get medical help?

An American-Israeli company, Stratasys, supplies the 3D technology to create the Hemosep machine.

These recent two deaths in Quebec are an indication of the very high risk that a JW woman faces when she is pregnant.

2 maternal deaths out of a population of only 155,000 JWs in Canada. Less than 1 weeks apart.

To be generous, let's say that these are the only two deaths from this cause, in Canada, the whole year. And we don't know that - theseAnd keep in mind that Canada has a reasonably good health care system with a fairly low maternal death rate. But, to be generous again, let's pretend that the whole world has the same level of care that Canada does (it doesn't) and the same maternal death rate.

Extrapolating 2 maternal deaths per 115,000 to the entire population of JWs worldwide, that would mean that at least 140 JW women per year die from blood refusal. Needlessly.
