  does anyone remember being a child as a JW and not having holiday?

  i am curious to know how many others shared the same experiences as me as a child, growing up as a jw.. surfing this board has brought back a flood of memories ( i am secure enough to deal with them) not all good.

  i have been away from jws for sometime, and remember being a child in school and having to explain why i do not salute the flag, why i have to leave the room when there is a birthday or christmas party, why i had to explain when i was seen going door to door ( i grew up to be a pioneer).

  being "different" is hard for a child.. now that i have 3 children of my own, who are fortunatelly not growing up as jw, to see how secure and well adjusted they are in school is comforting.

  you know at that point we as parents realized that if we stayed jws, we would for sure sometime in the future loose our children( in jws terminology ) to the "world", because that statement and reaction from our kids showed that they were not at all comfortable with the life we were living.

  Later, they started to bring all those valentine cards and toys they received from their classmates which they were hiding from us from fear that we`ll made them throw it all away.

  That day , our children taught us a lesson.

  I can only relate how our children reacted when we told them ,about 8 months ago , that they can sing national anthem, sing happy birthday song to their classmates,celebrate holidays - our kids had their eyes opened wide and the middle one just asked :" you mean we are going to be normal kids?" ,and then they all started jumping and hugging each other.

  My husband and I just looked each other - no words- what else to say but -glad we are out!

  I do agree that there are other ways to discipline children and there should be guidance for parents and caregivers,but to "scold Canada" is little bit too much.We Canadians are willing to please many and sometimes it makes us without backbone in some issues.

  Why doesn`t honorable member look at the continent she comes from - Africa- with issues like children soldiers, refugees, children mutilation, female circumcision and so on.

  Canadians are quite able to raise their own children,thank you.

  am I trying to get myself disfellowshipped?

  maybe, but i figure 1/11th of $30 million is worth it!.

  i just bought (along with a few others from work) my first lottery ticket.

  the only problem is, if we win, our pics and names get published, and if a dub sees it, then it's curtains for yours truly.. i'm maybe the only person in this area's lottery history who is ambivalent about winning $2.72 million.. but i think i could adjust!

  it is funny how jws would go after people who buy a lottery ticket,yet I knew of so many of them who would fill any draw ticket -ballot wherever they see one. Or couple of years ago popular radio station had a weekly giveaway -$1000 ,by randomly calling residences; well so many of our brothers( even some former po`s and co`s) not only stayed at home by phone but recorded their massage on calling machine- " any time is (name of radio-station), now give me my money"?!

  first i would like to thank you all for your courage to tell the truth about " the truth" and watchtower, and by helping ones like my family get so much information about witnesses.. just a quick introduction: we came to canada from yugoslavia 12 years ago and two years after we were baptized as a jws.

  because of that , our relatives in canada shunned us for betraying ortodox faith .

  now 10 years later we are shunned by our jw "friends" even thou we are not disfellowshiped nor did we disassociated ourselves.after reading information on this board about un, paedophilia and inhumane treatment of many who just did not agree with some practices, we just couldn`t go to meetings anymore.

  we live in Kitchener, Ontario less than an hour drive from Toronto.

  dear talesin: invictus means unconquerable and I believe it describes all of us here - because we all found way to stay true to ourselves.

  and yes we do love Canada and Canadians and we are proud to say that this year for the first time we cast our vote during election time in Ontario.
