I recall in reading in the COC bk, around 1980, a day after Ray's resignation letter was read before the Bethel family, the Bethel elders were called into a meeting with the GB .The late Lloyd Barry spoke in unfavorable terms over using Christendoms commentaries. The Barnes Notes commentary was used in the Service dept. and left out in the open. After Barry's thoughts, the Barnes Notes were keep in a draw afterwards and Randy W. stated they were banned from the libraries for a time . Also too I remember reading, that when Ray Franz approached his uncle Raymond about a biblical question, he was referred to check the Clarke's Commentary. It's ironic how the WTB&TS have used from different commentaries to support their theology, yet let a r&f used one in his further search of the scriptures, and he'd be told the Watchtower publications are good enough.

Yes TD is right. I have the Original WT Reprints (1919) and the Cds as well. Like to use the cds because the reprints are old and you have to be careful handling them. The Cds also include the original WTs from July 1 to Dec.15,1919 issue which you don't find in the original WT Reprints (they end on the June 15th issue). I sold off all my yearbooks (1927 - 2005) , but there are now yearbook cds from 1927 to 1942 and 1943 to 1959. Have a collection of full year WT sets from 1930 to date and Golden Age/Consolation/Awake sets from 1936 to date with some earlier single issues from the 1920's and early 30's.Have also a full set of booklets and books from the 1920's to date .Again alot of these publications can be found on cds,but if I can be of any help, no problem.

Not able to host the scan here, sorry : ( Anyway the article briefly mentions a letter sent from a Prof. A.Freeman,LL.D.,Litt.D., to the editors of The Flame (May-June issue) of the Bible Exhibition in London where there were thousands of Biblical exhibits. There was a stone found by archaeologists that was found to be a piece of the altar of Mt. Carmel dated 3000 years old. Imbedded in the stone was a blue transparent crystal, that was later compared with that found in the area of atomic bomb testing in New Mexico and the bombing of Hiroshima.

Question about Zion's Watch Tower
by jwfacts incan anyone tell me the year zion's watch tower was changed to the watchtower, and also why?
-
Invetigator74
Hi Jwfacts
I think I found your answer to when and why the name change from Zion's Watch Tower to The Watch Tower magazine. In the Watchtower Reprints(1919) page 4294 1st paragraph reads :
" With the New Year we expect to drop the word "Zion's" in the title of our Journal, because many of the friends inform us
that the word is objectional, having been so much used by Mr.Dowie and his followers. They report that our journal is frequently cast aside under the supposition that it is published under Dowie's auspices,or in some manner affliliated with Zion City, which he founded. The new name THE WATCH TOWER is the one by which the Journal is usually mentioned. It appears further, that African churches and papers use the word Zion extensively, which has led to the inquiry whether or not our Journal is published and generally read by colored people."
The first issue to carry the new name was the Jan.1,1909 Watch Tower. I hope this has helped you

W.T January 1, 2006
by Diogenes injust reading through the january 1st w.t 2006. the first study article (starting on page 20) "how firm is your trust in god?
" has another dig at higher education.. paragraph 7.
"anyone who does not trust firmly in jehovah might think differently.the majority of humans view material wealth as a major key to security.hence, parents have encouraged their offspring to invest much of their young adulthood in higher education, hoping that it will prepare them for well-paying careers.sadly some christian families have found the cost of such an investment to be very high, as their children have lost spiritual focus and turned to pursuing materialistic goals".

A Balanced Viewpoint
But, it may be objected, not everyone who goes to university loses his Christian faith or dies of a drug overdose. This is true. Some graduates have become valued and hardworking members of the Christian congregation. But consider, it is also true that not every child who plays on a busy street will get killed by a passing automobile. Some survive to grow up. But would you let your children play in the street in traffic because of that?
Does this mean that it is wrong to attend a university? This is something each parent should decide for his own child. However, in doing so, he should consider the above facts. It may be that the student can stay at home and attend college. Or perhaps he can stay with relatives who will keep a close watch on his associates and strongly encourage him to keep active in his Christian responsibilities. But considering all circumstances, will it be worth the time and effort? Will it equip him the better to serve his God?
Many parents feel that the potential benefits of a university education are not worth the possible horrendous costs, especially where the children would have to go unsupervised to another city or country. Instead, they direct their children toward some trade. For example, while in secondary school, are there courses in various trades that could help a youth to learn a skill that would enable him to make a living after he graduates? In some lands there are specialized trade schools of about a year’s duration where skills can be learned, or those begun in secondary school can be more highly developed."
The above was from the article :Education-What it costs,What it offers : July15,1982 WT
Ahhhhh now I see the logic!!
