Bill Gates gives more than anyone else I know. His foundation gives out billions of dollars annually to help the needy. In that sense I suppose you could say he was.

my only extensive experience of organized religion was the jehovah's witnesses.
my imprisonment in that sect was mercifully brief.
however, my experience with the "borned agin" crowd is very extensive.

i'm new to tarot.
i just got a hanson-roberts (similar to rider-waite-smith) tarot deck last week, and i have been getting familiar with the cards.
i also got a book, the complete tarot by teresa michelsen.
I've been doing cards for awhile and I don't think you can do a cold reading on a new deck and get an answer you should make a major decision on. If you want to PM me I can talk to you more about what that means, but I wouldn't worry about your "answer". Sometimes it takes awhile to get a feel for your cards.

.
this is some hilarious tomfoolery.
his charles manson-esque beard doesn't seem to help, either.. mel may be a powerful guy, but something tells me there'll be a price to pay for his anti-semitic remarks, even if they were made in a sauced-up state.
Mel converted to a more evangelical form of Catholicism sometime back as I understand it. Jewish people are not the only ones he has been on a tirade about he absolutely hates gays and has some very horrible things to say about us. I also heard his dad has gone on the public record to say that most of the holocaust is fiction. So seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
I used to like his movies. Wouldn't see one now for any money. Wish him the best in rehab but I doubt they will eradicate the venom.

the watchtower society is notorious for discouraging the brethren from performing acts of kindness and charity towards people of the world, claiming in their literature it is a waste of time or worse the funds may be absconded.
(see awake of this year "what is happening to charity?
today was 109 degrees in our town.
I once gave a slimfast bar to a man begging on the street.
I try to give them food instead of money. Lots of times they are only after drug/alcohol money. Not all, mind you, but a very high percentage. I won't support that. Feed them, yes, be codependent, no.

yesterday something happened that really pissed me off.
i was walking out of a store that has two doors you have to walk through... the inner door and the outer door.
basically a small foyer.. as i'm going through the inner door i notice a woman is behind be so i go on through and hold the door for her... she went right on through without a word and then went through the outer door, pushed it open and then let it fly back into my face.
I hold the door for people and I appreciate them holding it for me. I sure as hell hope it doesn't come down to gender. I do have to admit though, all my life I was the one to step aside on the sidewalk, lately I don't always do that, its more about me not being a floor mat anymore than it is anything else.
I think she was a rude bitch and you should have run up to her and, holding your hand over your eye, said, lady when you let that door go I think you gave me a black eye. Can I have your proof of insurance? No? Hold on while I call the cops.

I have volunteered with NW Aids Foundation, I give, when able, to charity, try to organize a food drive about once a year on a non-holiday for the food bank, both my dogs are adopted from the shelter, and if I see someone in need and its within my power I try to help. Once at an outside (non-heated) espresso stand I gave the server my leather gloves. She was running from the window to the people waiting in their cars and it was about 20 degrees outside.
Do I do enough. No. Wish like hell I could do way more.
Not the first time I thought the folks on JWD were awesome! I'm proud as hell of ya'all.

religion, race, sexual orientation etc.
are not legal barriers to adoption in most areas.
but knowing what you know now, if you were part of the decision-making process, would you be inclined to facillitate jw's to adopt?
I for one do know some good parents who are JWs. They sure as hell weren't mine and my experience was not the issue. The issue is saying that the religion is the basis for refusal. I happen to know some JWs who have NOT shunned their kids when they left, who take a more lenient view of some of the more hard core issues. One of them told me that (even though I wasn't their daughter by birth) they would talk to me anytime they wished and they didn't care if I am gay. Not everyone who goes to meetings and is active in fs is 100% behind the publishing company, but they do have their faith that some of it is true and feel that its as close as they personally can find.
Would I limit those people, good parents, not narrow-minded, with adoption based on their religion? Absolutely not. Thats why it isn't the issue. The issue is, would they be good parents. And, I truly believe you can get to that without bringing up the religion. Too many other cults out there who have or will drink the kool-aid.
So the civil rights is, WHY are you denying them the right to be a parent? Because they are anal, fanatics, who would only do what the fds told them? The right questions get to that.
My opinion, of course, is like.... well you know, everyone has one...

edited to add: I have barely had any sleep the last week so if this makes no kinda sense cut me some slack, huh?

I don't believe in taking civil rights away from people based on religion or anything else. Take the religion out and make everyone and I mean EVERYONE take a "fitness to be a parent" test. Now you have it. People put more thought into whether or not to get a dog than whether or not they can afford or take care of children. Don't get me started!

for those of you who like science fiction - what is your favourite science fiction book, or indeed film?
I just read "Fresco" by Sheri Tepper, awesome book. In the book one of her characters says (to paraphrase), most of the fundy religions worship their scriptures not their god. Thats why the world is as f*cked up as it is.
I didn't read clear back through this entire thread, but if no one mentioned Neil Gaiaman, he is AWESOME. Not sure if he's SciFi or not.
When I was first getting into Science Fiction one of the most memorable things I ever read was The Weapon Shops of Isher (I think that was the name), I can't rememeber the author, maybe Vinge? One of the old timers. A great read too for old school SciFi.
I also enjoyed the Zelazny series the Chronicles of Amber. .........and oh there are ever so many many more.........
