they knock really soft on our door too, so soft it doesn't make the dog bark. I know only because my bedroom wall is next to the front door and I hear them. I don't answer, they're here to give my mom the mags. I think its funny she's someone's mag route.

POLL: Can you turn your mind off?
by Lady Lee inok ladies you know how this goes.
you ask your man, "what are you thinking about?
now i have had more than one man tell me this.

I know that when I have said "Nothing." in response to the question, it was because I was just daydreaming or following my own little thought train. The idea of explaining what my thought train was or its context to me, seems like an unwelcome chore. i think comunicating about one's internal mind space could seem like a daunting task; there's a lot of information and detail, and to make any sense of it all, you need to describe the details and what it means to you.
Try this on: What if a guy asks another guy "What are you thinking?"
If the answer is "Nothing" then it is either "Nothing", not important, or too private. If the answer is anything else, then I think that most guys would try to describe or communicate what they were thinking.
The monkey mind is the constant chatter that meditation pratitioners talk about. That is the surface chatter, the worry about picking up kids, the writing of mental grocery lists and other things. For me, this constant chatter aggravates my feelings of anxiety. I like music, but don't listen to much music. Mental silence or at least economy of words and thoughts, feels like a balm to me.
Perky chattery people tend to drain me or drive me nuts.
I think "Can you turn your mind off?", I think its off when we're alseep and not dreaming, otherwise awareness is always present. I think its the surface mind, the chattery mind, that we can learn to quiet or turn off.

Now why would the WT not ask former elders the 3rd question?
by wheelwithinwheel inin chapter 3 of ks-10, paragraph 13 (page 35), the wt corp provides the precise questions that are to be asked aspiring elders before announcing their appointment.
there are only 2 for qualifying brothers who have served previously.
brothers not having served before must be asked a 3rd.. .

I don't think the WT would have a former victim or whistle blower as an elder. I don't 'know' this and can't prove it, its just a hunch on my part. My reasoning is that a victim would be more sensitive to the needs of another victim. Then there's the thing that many perpetrators are former victims. I AM NOT saying that ALL victims would become perpetrators.
I don't think they'd want whistle blowers as they could be a liability, legal or otherwise; they could never be trusted.
If there are any current or former elders here who were victims or whistle blowers, I think they would have an interesting perspective.

Fundamentalist Scientist

I would agree that usage of the word 'fundamentalist' is sloppy here, and the word 'extreamist' would be too extream.
I think one of the ideas here is that scientists are human, subject to human emotional flaws and biases and ego. If a scientist refuses to persue a line of experimentation due to his own ego, and ends up missing an important breakthrough, then who is that really serving? That is not a failure of the Scientific method, but of the man using it. What if he refuses to experiment along a certain line of thought due to fear of losing his grants? That is just politics hijacking the SM via the human trying to use it.
Science is only as reliable as the human using it.

Please post all the little things that make no sense about the JWs
by Aussie Oz ini want to collect a bunch of things that i can use to help my son see that the wbts and being a jw makes no sense.. i have a few in mind already.
they have to be things that might matter to a teenager, so doctrine will probably be out!.
(if you have read my last post you will see why).

i think the pyramid stuff written by Russel might be strange and entertaining enough for a teenager. Its so bizarre that even the South Park boys couldn't make up something like that.

"Have you ever been involved at
any time in the past with child sexual molestation?"
How would this affect a person who was a victim of child sexual abuse? How would this affect a whistle blower? Would a former victim or whistle blower NOT be appointed as an Elder?

A sense of displacement--holidays and what not
by sd-7 insome days it's a sense of almost temporal displacement--perhaps the belief that someone went back in time and changed something, so that this moment is not what it was meant to be.
other days it's a literal displacement, waking up alone, since i move too much in my sleep and it became clear that i should sleep separately from my wife.
anyway, i feel this odd, hollow sense of sadness.

No it is not weird to feel what you are. I too get a feeling of displacement, or disconection during the holidays. My birthday is the next week, so for me it is double.
I last celebrated my birthday and christmas when I was 6 or 7. What hurt the most for me -then and more so now- is the disconect from extended family, from family traditions, from a sense of family history.
Do you have family who are not or never were Jws? How is your relationship with them? During the holidays, you could spend time with them and just try to soak up the feeling of conectedness. Being a JW did forever change some aspects of the holidays for us; i still hate the massive consumer push.
You could set yourself the task of exploring different customes and foods from different cultures and adopt the ones that a meaningful to you. I love to bake and cook, and I love molasses and spiced cookies. My great grandmother was German, and she made the most wonderful cookies. My favorite were Pfeffernuse (Pepper Nuts?). The ones from the store are a sad pale immitation. I've tried a few recipees over the past few years, but they just don't turn out the same as hers.
If cookies is not manly enough for you, what about doing a roast or prime rib? I love making fresh grated horse radish, hotter than anything you will ever buy.
The winter holiday doesn't have to be about buying all kinds of junk. To me it is about being warm and cozy during the cold dark time of the year, for crafting and making things of comfort, for just being with friends and family.
I've wanted to try my hand at beer making, I think that is interesting. I think that would be a fun thing a couple of guys could try for the holiday.
