What is your town or area's claim to fame?
by free2beme inevery where you live, the local area has something about it that is either famous for something good or something bad.
as an example, you go to one town and it may have the historial site of a famous war battle.
you go to another an it might be the place something was invented, or the birthplace of someone famous.

Dick and Jerry Van Dyke grew up just outside of here. And Jerry bought the old movie theatre and turned it into a performance theatre.

The parties in Rural Arkansas were totally kingdum melody sing-a-LONGs, or Bible charades, or even watch a performance of a Bible drama... Whoever organized the party always, always had chaperones designated (no matter the age range of the party guests) and they were almost always elders or ms's. There was never alcohol at any of the parties and they were always over by 9:30 or 10:00.
Gawd! That was my youth.... That really makes me depressed!!

I've got two quotes...
From To Wong Foo, Vita, Noxema and Chi Chi are looking at cars when they see an old Caddy convertible:
Vita: I feel like Miss Jane Mansfield in this Car.
Noxema: Ooohhhh, Jane Mansfield. Not a good auto reference. From Office Space, at the end of the movie when Milton is at the resort:
Milton: I'll do it. I'll burn this mother down. -

How "old" is the oldest person who lived in your family?
by JH ini was just wondering how old can a person live.
my grandmother lived up to 97, almost 98. .
those born in 1914 are 92 years old and some are still alive.. i guess that no one lived over 120 years since the flood.. how "old" is the oldest person who lived in your family?

My Great-Great-Aunt Mae, my great-grandmother's sister, died a few years ago at the age of 102. I hate to say it, but I dreaded going to the family reunions because my folks always wanted a picture of me and my sister with Aunt Mae. She really wasn't a pleasant person to be around. I guess at that age, you don't have to pretend to be having a good time and she looked like she was as thrilled about the picture as my sister and I were.
The rest of the family lives until around 75 or 80.

17 Days: One Final Adventure
by Merry Magdalene ini once posted here a copy of my empassioned plea to the watchtower society--i want my mother back.
well, i just wanted to let all of you know that i got her back for a whole 17 days, and we had one final adventure together before she died, and there wasn't a damned thing they could do about it.. my mother is, was, a long-term loyal jw and i was her disfellowshipped daughter.
i believe she was in an almost constant state of conflict over me because her very strong maternal instincts demanded she behave openly and lovingly toward me, while her wts-trained conscience demanded the opposite.

Merry, I am so sorry for your loss.
Thank you for sharing this story of true, unconditional love. I hope that you and your daughter will cherish these memories for years to come.

How many ex-jws move out of town to start over?
by rebel8 ini was wondering how common it is for ex-jws to relocate after leaving the borg in order to escape the bad memories of being in a cult, or to break contact with cult members.. i have wanted to move far away for as long as i can remember--even as a kid--for this purpose.
various life circumstances have delayed that--long story--but mr. rebel8 and i are thinking of moving within the next few years.
i am the one who's most interested in moving to a completely different type of place--different culture, different climate, different everything!

I did a move/fade. I moved to another state. Did almost everything I was supposed to do for about a year. This included moving my publisher's card and attending the DC. (It just so happened that my old cong and my new cong were both assigned to the same city on the same weekend.)
Once I graduated and moved to Texas, I left town and they never heard from me again. I never even hinted to the elders that I was leaving town after graduation. Of course, I ran into jws in the new city in Texas (they cleaned the office I worked in), but they had no idea who I was, or what I used to be. I even attended the Memorial one year to see what it would be like to attend as an "interested one." The Memorial in 1998 was the very last time I ever set foot on wts soil.
Then, about three years ago, I decided to move back to Arkansas, but live in a different city than the cong I attended. I have run into a few jws I know, but for the most part I'm left alone. Since I never DF'd or DA'd, I'm only shunned by about half of them. The other half just make small talk and remove themselves from the conversation quickly.

Date ideas needed
by jstalin in.
i need some tips for fun places to go or things to do on a date.... i'm running out of ideas and i'm sick of the "go to the bar then to the club" kind of dates.
anyone have any ideas for me?
-
CountryGuy
The third or fourth date for Wayne and I was one of the most memorable.
He came over to my apartment with a sack of groceries and cooked me a complete dinner. At some point during the first couple of dates, he had asked me what kind of food I liked. I think he also got some ideas from a mutual friend (who set us up on our first blind date). After dinner, we listened to some music and just talked for a couple of hours. Of course, early on, talking is great because everything is interesting and they haven't heard your stories a hundred times.
Have fun!

what jehovah's witnesses don't say today, apparantly
by pepheuga inthis is absolutely a revelation to me:.
... we don't go out and say, "we're the only true religion.".

What has changed is the recruiting technique. They used to announce itfrom the loud speakers now they wait till a new person has become
investedinto the JW community to lay the heavy stuff on them.Invested.... Infested.... it's all the same with this cult.
Brown blatently lied to the media. And, I'm sure he had no problem with it at all, condsidering, as others have pointed out, it's simply Theocratic Warfare. However, I wonder if he's read Proverbs 6:16. It doesn't make any concessions about Theocratic Warfare when it says, "There are six things that Jehovah does hate; yes seven things are destable to his soul:" Lying is one of them.
