Galaxies, rather than stars!

i suppose that if i were an avid reader of the various astronomy magazines available i'd have more of an understanding about this.

for quite some time i've wondered how astronomers must calculate that there are so many galaxies (although obviously they don't know the precise number).

i figure that it apparently has to do with first determining that certain points of light, visible through telescopes, are farther out than our own "milky way" galaxy.

Another instrument used to calculate and measure what is going on in deep space is LIGO (laser interferometer gravitational wave observatory) a very high-tech sensitive detector. One has been built here in Louisiana another twin ligo facility in Washington State and a 3rd LIGO type called VIRGO in Pisa, Italy. Soon there will be a triangulational experiment between all 3 facilities in an effort to prove Einstien's theory of relativity using deep space gravity wave info. Recently 3 new theories have been proposed as possibilities to unify quantum theory, cosmology and relativity by dr Lee Smolin a professor ofv physics at the Center for Gravitational Physics and Geometry at Pennsylvania State University. The LIGO project is a callaberation between The National Science Foundation, Caltech and MIT.

Well I for one absolutely love and adore women. It gives me great pleasure in putting a woman on a pedastal. I am of the romantic nature
and enjoy holding the door open for a woman. Kind sweet women make me STRONG! I am a protector of women. I love to see em, communicate with them and work with them. I think men rule because they love women so much....they want to stay in control to protect them.

Freewill - a paradox

i have had a couple of discussions about freewill lately but it seems as if i am talking to a brick wall.

here is my basic reasoning, perhaps you can point out what i am missing.. lets outline the 2 common assumptions normally associated with the debate concerning adam, god and freewill:.

2. god gave adam freewill to obey him or not to.

Hello To All

as you can tell, i am another newbie, so i thought i would introduce myself.

i have been quietly reading the posts for some time now and thought it time to join in.. i am a 53 year old grandpa (neither daughter or their husbands are jw) married to jw woman with three kids, ages 15, 16, 17. therein lies the source of my discourgement and subsequent disassociation from the jws.

i outlined my involvement with the jws in my profile, if any are interested.

Welcome to the board. Many of us are trying to figure thigs out for ourselves here. Back when I was in the org. I had to go to the elders on private matters because I wanted to make sure I was staying in line with Jehovah's will. I would usually be directed to the watchtower bound volume of a certain year page 14 paragraph 11.,kinda the way an attorney looks up certain legal issues. You just are not encouraged to think for yourself and if mamma didn't print it
then you'd better wait for clarification. Im glad I don't have to deal with all that now.

Jacob decided to fight the angel for his blessing and they go at it all night! Because of this Jacob was given a new name. "Your name will no longer be Jacob.
Your name will now be Israel:BECAUSE YOU HAVE WRESTLED WITH GOD AND WITH PEOPLE< AND YOU HAVE WON!" (Genesis 32:26) By this I get the sense that GOD puts a high value on those who Persevere, fight and hang in there for what they want.

No im not saying we don't have a choice I am saying the bible seems to record that God does what he wants to do and doesn't do what he doesn't want to do. This is pretty much what you would expect from an Almighty God. If God likes you...then you get his favor...if he doesn't ...then you don't get his favor. He must have liked the whore of Jerico who hid the spies because even tho she was the town whore God liked what she did in hiding the spies and left her wall standing and put her name in the Hebrew chapter 11 hall of faith.

Frenchy,
I don't know about you but I feel better knowing that there is a GOD who has a plan for our good and is in complete control. If we are the masters of our own fate or destiny....then who needs a GOD?
Of course when something really really bad happens everyone begins to look to GOD for answeres. I am reassured by knowing that GOD loved the world so much that he sent his only begotten SON that WHOSOEVER places his trust in him will not be dissapointed. It seems to me that GOD will step in and overide someones will when it interfears with his plan, such as in the case of the christian killer Paul.
