"Apostasy (the sin of thinking for yourself without disengaging your mouth)" That cracks me up! I hope you get more replies on this thread. I find it very interesting. Sometimes I wish I had been more "forward" with my beliefs and disbeliefs about the JWs with my ex boyfriend. But arguing or discussing religion gives me the heebie jeebies, so I usually made my comment and left it alone. He knew I thought it was crap, tho.

When are book studies held?

when i was dating the jw he always told me book studies were on friday nights and so he couldn't see me on friday nights (unless he wanted sex on a friday night.

I thought I had seen people here mostly refer to them on Thursday nights. Never heard Friday mentioned. He lied about so many things I'm sure I'd never get them all sorted out! The biggest lie he told was "I don't lie" HAHAHA! He always said, "Liars are the worst of sinners." Guess he convicted himself there.

The most frustrating, sad thing in the world
by Soledad ini just learned that an ex-cowoker of mine became engaged to her abusive boyfriend.
she is probably one of the brightest, prettiest people i have ever known--but she doesn't believe that because her boyfriend would rather have her believe she is dumb, ugly and nothing at all without him.
i am so sad for this girl.. she was in college last year and he made her give it up.

That is heartbreaking. It's horrible to feel as if you're just standing by helplessly, but unfortunately you are. If she can't see it, there is no help for her. For some reason she thinks she deserves to be treated this way. I put up with a lot of emotional abuse in my second marriage-he would yell and throw things and break things-always my things. I never realized until I got into Al Anon that it was abuse. My thinking was that he never hit me, so it wasn't abusive.
Sometimes age and maturity can get us to a place where we can see that we don't deserve to be treated that way. I would say continue to let her know you're there for her, the offer to get her to a shelter was a good idea. Also the book Women Who Love Too Much is an EXCELLENT book. I hope and pray her eyes will be opened and she will begin to value herself. And also that she won't bring any kids into that poisonous environment. Makes me shudder just to think of it.
You're a good friend. She's lucky to have you.

Recently I've seen him here and there and everywhere on a Friday night and am beginning to wonder if this was another lie he told me to keep from being "committed" to me.
are book studies always held on a certain night or do they change?

Is it true, or just familiar?
by Markfromcali inthis is a simple enough comparison, but i think it's a question worth asking with a thread of it's own, even if it's just for the sake of reminder.
whether it's believing the jws or anything, do we notice whether it is what's reasonable and makes sense, or is it just 'agreeable' because it's familiar and comfortable?
obviously the latter wouldn't be a wise choice.

In searching for answers as to why my ex would be enmeshed in such a high control religion I have come to believe that it is familiar and comfortable for him. His parents' love was very conditional as he was growing up-"don't come home if you don't cut your hair," you can't live here if you don't go to college, etc." So for him, being threatened with being kicked out if you don't toe the line is what he is used to. He sees it as "normal" because it was for him. His ex-wife was abussive both physically and emotionally to him. In other words, he might look okay from the outside, but he's really screwed up on the inside!
