Which Ones Got To YOU?
by Sunspot in.
rather than hijacking lostreality's "question" topic, and frannie's post---i began to think of movies that were particularly moving to me...... there have been many throughout the years, but right off the top of my head i'd have to say "imitation of life" (lana turner), "love is a many splendored thing" (william holden), "the way we were" (barbra streisand) and "evergreen" (barbra streisand) that really made me lose it in the theater.. what movies struck *you* the hardest?.
annie....who should have invested in the kleenex corp)

Amy Tan's books are good, even though it seems as if she always writes about the same group of people with different names and situations, she aways makes it interesting and I enjoy the history of China that she includes. I recently finished The Kitchen God's Wife.
Dan Brown must be raking in the mucho denaro seeing how many people just on this board have read his books!

My thoughts exactly! I wonder if now he's having second thoughts about what, exactly, he bought into. He didn't know that to date me or marry me could cause him to be disfellowshipped!? Either he's really ignorant, in denial, a big liar or "D" all of the above! I say, "BYE! Thanks for playin'-NEXT!"

I'm with Brenda-that you don't have to be married to have sex!
That getting married at 18 is a really, really bad idea.
That you should know someone for more than 6 months before you marry them (made that mistake TWICE!)
That I can take care of myself
That being alone isn't so bad, and is much better than being in a crappy relationship
That it's better to be spiritual than religious
That I could find a way to go to art school even if my parents offered no help
I could go on and on! Where's the rewind button when you need it??

Little Toe-
I wasn't raised JW, and I wasn't ever one (thank God!). I'm here because I had dated a guy who was a JW and he acted really squirelly-which now I have come to find out is pretty normal for one in the org! I am constantly fascinated by what attracts and holds people in the WTS. He is a very intelligent man, but I can see now that he has emotional needs that hold him in the web of the watchtower.
Recently he showed back up in my life after a year and a half of absence, claiming to be ready for a committed relationship. He was trying to convince me that the org wasn't that importatnt to him-something that is belied by his actions. Let's see...you go on Sunday mornings, Tuesday nights, book study on Friday, D to D on Saturday, and it really doesn't mean that much to you??? Well I'm a dance fanatic and even I only get to go out maybe once a week! Duh!
The thing that brought up the facial hair question is that he picked up a magazine on my coffee table with a picture of a guy with a goatee and asked me if I thought he'd look good with one. I told him he wasn't allowed to have facial hair (which I learned here-thanks guys!) and he said, "Why not?" I said the WTS won't let you. He acted like he was going to be rebellious and grow one anyway. He asked, "What can they do to me?" The naivete of the guy just floored me. He has been associating with them for over 20 years, just got baptised 2 years ago and I know more about their doctrine and practices than he does! I asked him several questions that he couldn't answer and he said he would ask the elders and get back to me. I haven't heard from him since Sat, so I'm sure they told him to stay away from me. Bad associations spoil useful habits, you know.
I am so grateful for all I learned here that enabled me to see how he really is. I stick around because it's interesting and you guys are a great bunch of people.

I stayed up until 2:30 am finishing Ann Rule's Every Breath You Take about Allen Blackthorne's stalking and murdering his wife. I was shocked at the end to find out that he's now in the federal prison here in Atlanta! YIKES! He's so cold and calculating I just know he's in there trying to figure out a way to get out. I didn't sleep very well.....
I have also read The DaVinci Code and thought it was great.
Another good one is He's Just NOT That Into You! which demystifies all the things guys do and say that really mean-"I'm just not that into you!" Very educational.

I was never a JW, but I was a fire-breathing fundamentalist Christian for a while, and I too, celebrated Christmas, but told my kids from the get-go that Santa Claus was just the spirit of giving, and not a real entity. I was concerned that they would think when they found out that he wasn't real, that God, whom they couldn't see either, wasn't real either. They are grown now and don't seem to be scarred for life. It also made explaining to them why we were buying Christmas presents for the poor children easier. I heard of a woman who took her 6 year old kid to do that and he asked her-"So, what's the deal with Santa? Doesn't he like poor kids?" I would be hard pressed to come upwith an answer for that one!
But over all my philosophy is live and let live. Just because that was my decision doesn't meant everyone should do it. It just felt right for me, and I caustioned my kids not to go spreading it around that there was no real Santa, because it might ruin some people's Christmas. Not everyone believes the way we do.

Am I doing what's needed??
by Dawn inthis question would seem funny to non-jw's - but i bet some of you x-jw's will understand.. i look at the world around me and see so much need.
i look at my own life and see so much blessings and wealth.
i give to charity - but i always think - "is it enough?

I've never been a JW, but yesterday I was driving my daughter around to use the gift cards she had received for Christmas and was thinking along the same lines. I feel so badly for those suffering so much and here I am driving a nice car through the McDonald's drive through. We often take the good things we have for granted, but I believe God also honors our gratitude for the good that we do have, and he looks at our hearts and knows that we are happy to give what and when we can.
Besides, if you give everything away, then you become a charity case that others need to support! The thing I don't understand is how those with enormous amounts of money can spend it so carelessly. I don't believe I could ever bring myself to spend $475 for a pair of shoes!!! But that's just me....
