Watchtower doctrine: Judges 1:19 (God couldn't defeat the Iron Chariots)
by southwest inthis weeks assigned bible reading is judges 1-4. i have never noticed judges 1:19 before which reads in the nwt as:.
jehovah was with judah, and they took possession of the mountainous region, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain,* because they had war chariots with iron scythes.
but in the kj as:.

Either way you translate its the same net result. Either the desert couldnt drive them out or the people the desert god was backing couldnt drive them out... But he could make the walls of jerico fall.....? In egypt he could take the wheels of the chariots... But not now...? None of it makes sense because its all legend and folklore. -

Just ask simple questions and make street witnesses move along
by OnTheWayOut inyou don't have to know much to talk to jw's and show them they don't want to really discuss the matters.they consider a discussion on the matter they are pushing to be "confrontational.".

On a personal level i didnt appreciate the clowns who went into the kh and passed out pamphlets, making asses of themselves in the process...
This had a much different feel. I had no problem at all with the manor of approach or the general way he carried it out. As a small critique, when he cited a labratory experiment that made something from nothing and the young man said "no it didnt" it devolved into a very childish "yes it did" "no it didnt" thing with no evidance or logic either way. Aside from that brief moment all i saw was a guy asking a young man why he felt as he did, something every witness SHOULD welcome! Instead these three were extremly ill prepared and embarrassed themselves. It may well have some done good for the younger one in fact. Bravo. I wish when he was reasoning with him regarding all the other gods men have made up he would have brought that full circle! He had the you man admitting (as any witness would) that zeus and other gods et all are fabrications of man...he needed to simply spring the trap and ask WHY or WHAT PROOF he had that the desert god was different than zeus or appolo and let him twist around trying to explain.
Unfortunatly i thought his choices of topic for the second video was rather ill concived. Laying responsiblity on any one religious group or specific person of a religious group for a lone particular homeless man is, frankly, ignorant. If he used that one man as a general example and asked what witnesses do to help others in general perhaps it would have made some impact in highlighting the lack of love for fellow man but even at that it would have been difficult. Again, i respect that he wasnt overly confrontational about it and he did move on to another topic but that bit just didnt work anywhere near as well as simply questioning them about why they believed as they do regarding the cover of the mag they were offering.

American Sniper - courage or cowardice?
by Simon inthe movie american sniper is breaking box office records and of course there is some irony that a movie about a sniper is released on martin luther king day (who was shot by one).. but of course there is a world of difference between an assassin and a military sniper ... or is there?.
some are making a big stink about it and claiming that "snipers are cowards".
it seems unfair to me.

Was an elder, i an see you have deeply held feelings regarding the second iraq war and the united states involvment and i wouldnt insult you by trying to convince you otherwise. I do however take exception to your invocation of goodwins law and comparing all american soldiers involved in the war to nazi's and their participation in ww2. The simple reality is that few german soldiers who fought in ww2 were guilty of the atrocities that brought about the nuremburg trials, the arena that you refer too when you referance the "just following orders" defense. In effect, They wernt all "nazi's" even though they were all german soldiers in ww2. Im not trying to fan a flame war, only pointing out that you are painting with a very broad and historically inaccurate brush. -

Legal scholars: JW court cases before Supreme Court were "accidental wins."
by TerryWalstrom inthe outcomes of jehovah's witness court cases, to most first amendment scholars, the witness successes in court, especially the supreme court, were accidental.
legal scholars have uniformly dismissed the witnesses' methods for bringing about first amendment cases, referring to their legal successes as mere unintended consequences of fanatical preaching.
for example, legal scholar bernard schwartz noted that jehovah's witnesses, "who became involved in trouble with the law were only seeking to propagate their unpopular creed.

Wow! Its always enlightning to see the other side of things. As a born in dubbie you hear the stories about court victories and dont question the actual details. Very enlightning indeed. -

by Simon inthere are many things wrong with the world, many injustices and crimes committed.
what if we could stop one of them?
wouldn't it make the world a slightly better place?

Need advice on a comeback to my wife: when she is in cult mode she says faith without works is dead.
by goingthruthemotions inso i have gotten into arguements with my wife in the past about this cult.
now a days after reading steve hassan books...i just try and avoid anything jdub with her.
try to keep her in authentic mode..(not sure she really has one).

What is so interesting, as several others have commented, is that in his discussion of faith needing works, james never once mentioned the door to door ministry or ANY ministry for that matter. In that second chapter as he was making his case, james refered to men of faith and how their faith moved them to act but never once even suggested a sharing of faith as that act. As someone noted already, he did talk about taking of orphans and widows though :)
sadly, all of this will fall deaf on the ears of average dubbies. Its abput them seeing what was preprogrammed for their eyes....

He may have recently given some talk that stirred people up but that homosexual topic was a frequent one. When i first arrived and went through entrance school there was a whole lot of talk about not giving your roomate a message etc etc... As i say, it didnt start in the 90's by any means and im sure it still goes on now and im sure its still discussed and warned against.
In any event i dont mean to derail the original topic or subsequent bump/discussion, i was only offering my view point and experiance with sydlik when i was at brooklyn, that being he didnt seem to have any untoward interest in young brothers nor were their any rumors about him during my time there. Again this is not suggest that the account is false, only to say i have my doubts and would like more evidance or facts before accepting it as fact.

Very well could have been but i think thay was prior to the df'ings. Rumor had it every 10 or 15 years they 'cleaned house' house of homosexuals. It didnt start in the 90's and im sure it goes on now. In that enviornment, with so few women and NO approved outlet for normal sexual feelings, men turn whatever is around. It was very prison like in some respects.
*Just want to be clear here that im not in anyway opossed to homosexuals or whatever sexual orientation someone possess, im simply noting what i observed in my time at bethel and why that may be the case.

Sorry, i also should add that i know from my own time there that bethel in the early 90's was rampant with homosexual activity. My barber was df'd for it along with many others in a big brouhaha. Cleary it could have gone to the top, but dan just didnt seem to have a facination with the young men....
