just thought i'd start a thread about lucas revisiting star wars films and making new edits - for better or for worse.. first off, let me say that george lucas has a tremendous imagination and star wars (1977), also known as episode 4: a new hope, and the empire strikes back (1980) - episode 5 in the franchise - are two of my favourite films.

as progress has been made in special effects, including the development of cgi, it makes sense for lucas to go back and retouch the spaceships, laser blasts and light sabres, improving what was 70s and 80s effects.. but i feel that lucas' tinkering has been a mixed bag - some have been bad choices, some unnecessary and others have been good.. what do you think ... .
Out of place??? He was the wise old master feeling out the potential student. Remember lukes words: he was seeking out a great warrior. naive and foolish. As yoda had to quickly remind him, wars do not make one great. It was zen teachings all over the place.
Fucking jar jar binks had NO reason or purpose in the plot. He was bumbling idiot that served no purpose beyond lame comedy.

Let me first say im also a fan of the original two movies. Greatness.
There are a ton of problems with the prequals but heres the biggest, imho: the original two (new hope and empire) followed a common thread, had a common plot. You can distill it in whatever way suits you but it was essentially a space soap opera set to the themes of meiji era japan. That is the era tha saw the end of the samurai and the shogun rule and all the entire system of governance commerce etc etc it was entire cultural revolution.
The jedi were simply “samurai” and the force was “ki” or whatever other eastern religious energy force you want to substitute. He wove in themes of master/student (obi wan/luke) from eastern martial arts tradition, the lost student (vader) seeking to kill his former “good” master, the redemption of the master by training a new “good” apprentice (remember in a new hope there was no emperor) on on it goes, but you get the point.
the problem with the everything done after empire was that it lost that thread. He didnt progress the story and lost any hope of continuity with his own themes. The prequels did NOTHING to show us the good student turning evil and gave no sense of the students true strength as he slid toward evil. It was all so poorly written and had lost sight of the the prequel story, the student/teacher souring relationship. We got dog shit filled with special effects and we were supposed to be so enthralled that we overlooked the stench.
Redoing the special effects in new hope wasnt offensive... until he had han shoot first. That altered the story and character FOR NO REASON!!! Greedo threatened to take the falcon. Han shot without remorse. Its who he was. A smuggler trying to make a living under a domineering empire. Fuckin greedo shot first my ass. And it looks so awful. The original scene was magic. He leans forwad and “boom”! Greedo dead under the table. Greatness.
i thought of successfully fading out, but suffered a miscarriage last week.

No that wasnt a miscarriage. A miscarriage is a biological process outside conscious thought. This was an abortion. You choose to kill your fade. Not judging, Just want to be clear for others who may read this and think fading is inpossible or even difficult.
If you wanted to keep your fade alive you could have simply thanked them for their concern and told them you would think over what they said.. or do what ive done and decline to speak with them at all.

So i have a question.. i saw the op’s laters post regarding the situation that prompted the topic. Is it common in london for all trees to be inspected on some sort of schedule? It seems ridiculous to my american sensibilities to expect trees to be inspected and deemed “safe” somehow. How did the tree fall? Was the girl climbing on it? A big gust of wind? Was someone cutting it down? So many details missing here...
If this were a random accident, the tree fell and this poor little girl was hit then the owner bears legal responsiblity (under american law) but morally its a far more detailed discussion about where the tree was, was it obviously dead etc etc,... but if the only claim of moral responsiblity is that it had been more than year since some sort of tree inspection had been done...? Seems very bizarre to me.
