Favourite Quirky / Low Budget / Non-Mainstream Movies

so the recent topic about film franchises got me thinking.

sure, we all love the big budget, mainstream releases that are so successful they spawn never-ending (it sometimes seems) sequels.

we could watch marvel and star-wars movies for the rest of our lives (and we might just ...).. but y'know what i love?

Duel was indeed Spielberg's first.. one of the great plot devices was he never showed the driver. It was as if the truck itself was the villain. Its an intense movie!

Im going to take an unpopular stand (rare for me i know)... the abyss was abysmal. I like the first 3/4 of it but the end was the laziest most poorly written nonsense i have ever seen. It ruined an otherwise good movie. Had to get that off my chest.

Saw is an interesting nominee. It was indeed small budget horror and was so popular it spawned a series. Im not huge into the gore franchise but it was a movie that captured my interest and kept you hanging on till the end to see the resolution...

i can’t speak for everyone, but in my experience my whole life as a witness, people, mainly woman , were speaken of very poorly for “commiting fornication”.

and everyone was so repulsed by women who wore “revealing” clothes, always saying, “women wear things like that, or let their daughters go out like that, and then wonder why their raped.” which makes me want to throw up.

if you even got in trouble for a groping session, you were the talk of gossip for weeks, maybe for years if some had it in for you.

office space is def a FANTASTIC movie. That first half is legendary and the soundtrack is epic too... “yea... think im gonna need you to move your desk”

Lol xan, the abyss is the exact opposite of a low budget quirky film 😂😂 In fact, the special effects with the creatures making the face out if water and exploring were cutting edge :)

one if my picks isnt exactly low budget either but it is very quirky and died at the box office only to be come a classic as it moved to the home market- Fight club. It makes interesting comentary on modern life constantly and has tons of details to find after you seen it the first time

i don't remember seeing it ever really talked about here but the facebook group with the namesake of this post shut down at the end of march.

it was archived and they weren't clear as to when or if they would come back.

it seemed to come out of nowhere, and i know a lot of people were disappointed.

I remember not too long ago when safari wasnt compatible... now its super moble friendly. Cant wait to see what the update brings ;)

Film Franchises

so, i'm quite into films, and horror is my favourite genre.. i don't own many franchises in full or almost in full.. but when i first started collecting dvds, i did tend to buy every film in a particular franchise if i enjoyed the first film or two.. i bought alien (1979) and aliens (1986) second-hand for 99 pence each (less than a dollar each!

) and they're fantastic.. so, i went back to the second-hand shop and bought alien 3 (1992), alien resurrection (1997) and prometheus (2012) ... erm, yes.

alien 3 (theatrical cut) was pretty good; resurrection was so bad it's funny and despite the gorgeous shots and good acting by michael fassbender, prometheus wasn't my thing.

Loved the original sw, empire was worthy if flawed (just how long was luke on dagoba??), the others i have no love for. Jedi ruined one of the greatest movie villains of all time, the prequals (aside from a few scenes) were bland and uninspiring. The empire was defeated by ewoks. Rouge one was good but again wasnt “new” so much as simply taking the one successful theme (the death star) and expanding on it.

loved the original alien, and aliens, while a different genre, was also well done and a good movie... went deeply down hill from there.

There is a franchise not mentioned that i can recomended in its entirety: the men in black franchise. All three movies were well done. Good mix of action, a certain self aware humor, good interaction between tommy lee jones and will smith, the plots were coherent and well excecuted... and all three held up.

Just one mans opinion, your results may vary.

why are so many youth flipping out and gunning down fellow students?

is there something seriously wrong with society?

does the public education/indoctrination system need some serious tweaking?

Hmmm... can you actually find someone who said that..? Im thinking you just made that up because you think it sounded good. You wouldnt just make a quote up would you? You have some source to attribute that too, right?

The Republican party (the right) is heavily supported by the NRA.

so stupid as to not even need to be responded too. But false. Even the left realized how comparatively little the nra gives and backed off that position. Perhaps you didnt get the memo.

Also, congragulations flipper! You managed to go back to ronald regan to assign blame for the current school shootings. Pretty impressive. Im a bit supprised you didnt work Nixon in as well, but reaching back 30 years is impressive in its own right.

@humbled- i agree in tht i didnt feel as he did when it came to solutions. The whole sexual purity thing hs no relevance to school shootings. The motivations, however, were worth thought.
