Jw's attitudes toward the act of baptism
by _Morpheus ini attended (meaning was emotionally blackmailed) a jw baptisum ceremony today.
i was awestruck at the "event" status given this.
to be sure it wasnt the first time i witnessed it but for whatever reason it really stood out to me what a spectical they have turned this into.

Perhaps im reading to much into it or perhaps im not expressing myself well... It just seems that if baptisum is the outward symbol of dedication to god then why is it is seemingly worshipped as an act by dubbies...? Dubbies also note that you are not 'once saved always saved'. If thats true then the act if baptsium isnt worth glorifying in the way it is... As i said, maybe im over reaching or maybe im not expressing myself well...

Greek Mythology influence on New Testament
by Magnum ina few days ago, i was in a book store, and i picked up a book providing a brief overview of classical mythology.
as i examined the opening pages, i read about tartaurus (place of punishment) and hades (god of the underworld).. it seems so odd that tartarus and hades would be mentioned in the new testament, and yet they were part of greek mythology which predated the new testament.
why would bible writers have used such terms?

If god cannot communicate clearly, dispite our own preconceived ideas, hes not much of god.

I dont have anything in the way of research but we recently doscussed this on another thread and i too have noted the use of tartarus. Its clearly a referance paul used as a result of greek influance. neither the term nor even the concept is found in prechristian jewish writings. It was however very popular in helinistic culture.... Along with demi gods, that is half man half god beings... Sound like anyone the in the bible ;)?

To be sure it wasnt the first time i witnessed it but for whatever reason it really stood out to me what a spectical they have turned this into. Litterally hundreds of people crowed around the pool and hudreds more jocking for position to see the monitor broadcasting the dunking. It really stood out to me what a pretentious show it was.
Biblically Jesus presented himself to john. few witnessed it. same with every other baptisum i can think of in the bible. Yet another twist of outward appearance being emphisised in dubbie land.

Why JW marriage is a huge problem for the organization.
by kneehighmiah inthe difficulty of finding a marriage mate is well known for sisters.
but i would say it's hard for brothers also.
i was talking to a jw last night.

I agree with your observations on divorce frequency, at least as far as my own local area is concerned. Divorces are common among dubbies as they are anywhere else.
I also agree that the org has a "marriage" problem in the sense that, as a cult, they are obssed with control and that includes controlling who marries who. Truth be told, i presume they would keep everyone single to allow for more focus on the 'kingdom'. They use various scriptures to support that very thing, in fact.
I even agree that remarks like those made by tony encourage people to look for and value the wrong things is a SO, foolish things like cult tittle of MS. Those things dont to lasting marriages, as has been proven time and again.
I would however caution you and point out that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. What's attractive to me may not be to you. as long as humans have reproductive drive, humans will find other humans attractive enough to mate with :)
