They dont think of it as "mind control" but they absolutely believe that the sheep cant be allowed to much freedom as they would stray. I have heard that directly fron louches arrogant ass mush mouth during morning worship. They think the rules are a protection for the weak.

Whats in it for them?
by Moster ini have been out for nearly 40 years now - baptized at 14 (although not to the org), but faded away.
but i am wondering about this:.
aside from the obvious power they wield, what's is in it for the gb?

I think, as is true of any board of directors (or body of elders for that matter), there are a few general personality types.
You have a few who are there for the "right" reasons, ie they believe in the cause or company, want to help, do the right thing etc etc
you have a few who are loyal soldiers and were asked to join the board because they wont make waves and can be manipulated
some may not have wanted to say "no" because they thought it was an honor even if even if they didnt want the work...
and some people want power, plain and simple.
I saw it first hand in losche when was appointed to the gb (i was in Brooklyn unfortunately). Lunatic, full of himself, crazy ass theories that he liked to spout, liked to brag abput how many langues he spoke, talked to down american jw's about american customes and on and on...
tight pants tony really takes the cake on that though. The final straw for me was during the "zone visit" four or five years ago when he gave the now legendary "tight pants" talk. He sumerized all his asinine self promoting rules by saying, and i quote his arrogant ass directly, "if you dont like you can take it up with jesus". That arrogant son of a bitch actually put HIS words and rules on par with jesus. Although i was fully awake already that was really the final moment of 'oh hell no' for me. And whats worse, he was directly saying he wasnt going to listen any debate about his PERSONAL rules and views. Instead, if you dont like it, talk to his imaginary brother that he gets his imaginary authority from, which is of course impossible, because its all imaginary.
So yea, some of them may be true believers and some may be along for the ride but at least two of them are power hungry hungry asshats who know EXACTLY what they are doing and why.

Your such a reactionary racist son of a bitch simon. Im sure its white racist white males who want to steal from poor minorities.... or american teenagers who are followers of the colombine kids... or people emulating timothy mcvey. Whoever it was im POSITIVE it wasnt islamic nutjobs waging war on innocents. It definitely wasnt that.

48% Capacity at Kingdom Halls - A post on reddit
by berrygerry inthere was a letter read this week, followed by a talk about all the changes that are coming in the next couple of months regarding merging congregations in the area (va/md/dc) - the letter said that the kh's in the area are only being filled to 48% capacity.
this was music to my ears as i have noticed the decline in attendance in all the neighboring congregations.
they will sell some kingdom halls and merge some congregations.

Totally agree with the thought that the younger ones are looking at older ones and in my area (washington dc) MANY many older ones are being vocal to the younger generations about not selling themselves short educationally and in terms of job prospects.

How Far Up The Ladder Did You Go In JW Land?
by minimus ini pretty much did it all.
vacation pioneered as a youngster and became a regular pioneer out of school.
i became a ms then an elder.....the organization pushes you to be somebody within the confines of their realm.

Interestingly being an ms or elder or piosneer etc isnt the measure of the watchtower ladder.
The measure of how far up the ladder you were is really to ask "how indoctrinated were you"
did you really think it was wrong to watch R rated movies?
did your really believe god was going to every man woman and child who didnt think your bronze age goat herder diety was right about everything?
Did you really believe that everything the gb (or wt) said was on par with the bible?
did you really think it was right to shun family and friends just because the watchtower said so...?
We could go on and on with examples but you get the point. Imaginary tittles (and tittles that only men could have anyway) were never the measure of the watchtower ladder... it was always how crazy were you willing to be for the cult.

Did you ever have a discussion with an apostate that helped your journey out.
by jwfacts inthere seems to be a number of different ways that apostates try to get jehovah's witnesses realise they do not have the truth, ranging from subtle comments to aggressive attacks.
do you have any that looking back helped you finally leave.
some of the methods include:.

@longhair gal: yes mr coffee was hit by a bethel laundry truck. I wasnt an eye witness but the brother driving felt awful for as long as i was in contact with him, simply because it was an honest mistake and he knew that it appeared to be intentional because coffee was a raging lunatic.
Btw coffee was so named because his big apostate moment of awakening was deciding that jw's shouldn't be allowed to drink coffee or tea as caffeine is addictive. He would stand out side Brooklyn bethel and rant for hours at the top of his lungs about the hypocrisy of jw's drinking caffeinated products.
All so called "militant" apostates end up sounding just as foolish to me , both when i was dub and now far removed.

Like you, jwfacts, i had several encounters over the years growing up as jw with "apostates".
One, when i was about 17, really stands out. I wad in "field service" with a very dear old "sister", she would have been in her late 80's at the time, although able to walk well (if slowly) and still sharp of mind. We knocked on a door and the youngish man (mid 30's) who answered proceded to launch into a rant about how it was all all a lie and how she (the older "sister") was still a slave (she was black) etc etc... The older "sister" i suppose had heard it all before and was very calm in stark contrast to the man at the door. That delayed my exit by many years, frankly.
When i was at bethel there were always "apostates" (mr coffee among them) ranting near headquarters. Never gave them a second look. It was obvious that we had the truth since we were important enough to protest!
Over the years at various district conventions there were protests, usually small, anywhere from one or two up to maybe 10 people. Signs and chants etc etc... for the record these protests were in Richmond VA and reading PA. Totally useless. Even when i was an MS/elder and working as an attendant assigned to watch them it never phased me.
What ultimately did have a huge impact was a young man who was of another christain denomination that a fellow witness wanted me to study with. I wasnt particularly interested, even at that point, in studying with people. I was an elder and had a full plate with a wofe and 2 kids. A study was extra work that i didnt need or want. However i agreeded to meet the young man (he was in his early 20's and i my late 30's at that time). Upon further review he was simply reverse witnessing and i quickely saw that, but he was very nice and willing to have reasonable 'personal' discussions, not just repeating his mantras after i repeated wt mantras. It was real exchange of ideas. It gave me room to think... it also lead me to google search and to show up here on this web site.
It was discussions here and reading information on the JWfacts website that eventually let me get free. As i began to explore the doubts that i had always had after seeing things at bethel and as an elder i saw fairly quickly that the truth was anything but. Realizing and accepting are two different things, and being able to finally act took much longer, but that was the start.
the "militant" tactics were less than useless. They kept le around longer than i otherwise may have, but if it made some angry "apostate" feel better than i hope it helped them. In the end i cannot say enough about calm and friendly discussions that allow for free thought and the anonymity that the internet allows as factors in me being able to grow past watchtowerisum.

Jackson's rose colored watch only cost $399, don't use it as an argument.
by Bad_Wolf ini looked up that watch and see it for $399.

Cost aside its the "newest latest greatest " digital technology that the gb constantly rail against and tell the rank and file not to buy. It set an incredibly poor example and is yet again "do as i say not as i do" buy the gb, just one of many things i saw first hand that drove me away.
