by notalone inwe all know the rate of suicide is high among jw's.
my question is this- was there some subliminal messages that encourage this.

I am very much in favour of discussions on suicide prevention and causes and signs to look our for etc etc, however i have two problems with some of the assertions in this particular discussion
1) whenever a post or an article or a veberal stament starts with "we all know" i immediately call bullshit. "We all know" is classic appeal to authority argument, an attempt to make someone who "dosent know" feel ashamed or afraid to speak out and to silence questions before they ask. I absolutely do NOT know of a high suicide rate among jw's. In fact, anecdotally, in my 40 years as a jw, in a the washington dc metropolitian area with many thousands of jws living in close proximity, in my years as an elder and i cluding my time time at bethel, i know of only one jw who took his own life, and he suffered from a chronic condition that caused him a great deal of physical pain. So i strongly disagree that "we all know" jws have a high suicide rate.
2) the whole premise uses a witness mindset that is patently untrue: that somehow witnesses are different. They are not. Witnesses will try to tell you that their divorce rates are lower... they are not. They are average for the areas they live in. They will try to tell you that their kids are better behaved or their houses are cleaner or fill in the blank with whatever witness tripe you want. They are not different.
They are not different in this either. I expect the sucide rate among witness is exactly the same as other segments of the population in which they live. Why do i say that..? Because the occurance of mental illness is exactly the same among jws as any other segment of the population.
Its fun to blame the cult for everything that goes wrong in a witnesses life but its not factual.
For some, the only reason they go on living is because of the false hope and comfort of the Jewish fairy tales.... does that factor in in your imaginary suicide rates...?
Mental illness knows no religion. For some the cult may make things worse for others it may provide a helpful framework of support. In the end the averages are certain to be the same.

by TerryWalstrom inwhat do you think would happen.... .

Just to go along with MMM, freedom is core issue. The market value of something is only set by peoples desire for a product or service, that is to say their choice of using or buying it. Freedom is at the core of every positive innovation in human history. A wise man once jokingly said "it wasn't a fitness freak who invented remote controls". It underlines that desire to improve and freedom to dream and explore are at the root of innovation. Communisium dosent innovate. Even the 'oh so awesome' chi comms that one poster seems to love so much never innovated a goddamn thing. They stole technology and tried to improve it. The only area they ever innovated in was the military... out of necessity and the freedom to explore the ideas associated with it

I get the nihilist feelings. When the panda petting paradise is your world and then it gets taken away there is a deep sense of loss and hopelessness. Its easy to fall into a sort of despair and nihilist feeling without the eternal reward to bank on...
Before making the radical choice, however, remember: the option to forgo life will never go away and, all too sadly, it will be your end anyway.
Give life a chance.
Life is for living and the wt ingrains that this life is temporary and its something of an "investment". You give up pleasure now and get the return of paradise and pandas yadda yadda... the truth is this IS life and we have the ability to make the best choices we can to enjoy and ourselves and leave a better tomorrow for those we care about. Its not temporary in your life. Its always good to look at the long term but dwelling on the ineffectiveness of your 80 years compared to the earths billions years is getting lost in the big picture. No extreme view us beneficial. Keep a macro and micro view but live in this moment. The next isnt promised.

I am looking at back surgery any thoughts on should I or not?
by Still Totally ADD inback in march i fell and injured my back at work.
my back has been a problem for many years but certain exercise has able me to function normally through the years.

Tough situation. I hope those who responded with their own experiences noted what you said your problem was- spinal stenosis. There is no amount of excersise or stretching that will heal stenosis.
i had a close relative undergo surgery for that very problem (very close in age to you). She found some relief but ultimately the stenoisis has returned and the talk now is of more surgery. Explore all options my friend but life on pain killers sucks.

Again, communism and its related philosophies take away individual liberties with authoritarian centeral governments and no one on this thread has shown a single example where that is not true. Not a single one.
Whatever its flaws, capitalism demands everyone be responsible for themselves and do something with their life to survive by empowering individuals. It may sound brutal but its liberating and i wouldnt trade my individual rights for all the nanny states in the world.
Less government. More personal freedom. Screw commies.
