Indianapolis, IN or South Carolina?????

howdy, this is to try out our new "desperately seeking" forum -----some of us who have moved over the years......or are just not free to say outloud "i don't wanna be a jw!!!".

soooooooooo, i grew up in indianapolis, in - stayed until i was 30, primarily irvington congregation on 21st street (eastside) - anybody around there?

YERUSALYIM: I know where Sparta is. I currently live in the Champaign-Urbana area. I bet that South Carolina is so much better than it is here in IL!!

WAITING: Glen Kleine...yes, a wonderful person. I spent alot of time with him and his family, as I hung out with their kids and all...even when he was DF'd. He & Delo were very nice people. And he ALWAYS had some kind of story to tell, that is for sure!

I also knew the Sparks. Don & Jan Needham (who both could be 'strange' sometimes, but funny) were also in the congregation around that time...I used to like to go to Euchre parties at their house.

BORG: Glen Kleine had other brothers, so there were other Kleine kids around. Glen's daughters were: Glenda and Diane and the sons were: Danny, Nathan, & Mark.

SAM BELI & WAITING: Glen was about the best speaker I've ever known. His brother, Ed, lived about 2 hours north of Indy, near the IL border and was a close friend of my parents....and they were both alot alike in their looks, mannerisms, and speaking.

SAM BELI: Yes, I remember attending many assemblies in that Assemble Hall (that used to be the church temple). Our Circuit here in IL was even assigned there for a few years for our assemblies! I know that when I left the area they were looking to build a new assembly hall and sell that one. Does anyone, perhaps, know if they ever did that? Just curious....

It is so nice to find people with common acquaintances and all....it makes boards like this so much more personal and meaningful to me (at least to me). I'm really enjoying this thread.....

Hi! I lived in Indy for about 4 years (1988 - 1992).....AND, for all but one year of that, I attended the Irvington congregation. Around 1990 they did an entire reorganization of all the Indy congregation territories and redrew territory lines and Irvington congregation all but disappeared.....I think they even ended up renaming the congregation (what few of the original congregation that were left).

I was getting split up from all the friends I used to hang with....I lived just 1 house over the territory line and was going to be in a new congregation where I didn't know a soul. I was very upset and wanted to stay with the congregation that was 1 house over from me, where I knew more people, but I was told it was wrong to go against the brothers and that if I did I would have privileges taken away.

So, I did an even more stupid thing....I just up and got married and we moved to another congregation in the far northwest of Indy....College Park congregation. We were back to the East side in less than a year and out of Indy not too long after that.

But, of all the congregations I've attended in my life...I have to say that I enjoyed my time in the Irvington congregation best....probably primarily because of my age at the time and my friends at the time.

Maybe there are common friends or acquaintances???????

Relating to Non-JW's

i read the "ex-witness singles" thread and it seems like a good idea.

the thought has crossed my mind many times before since non-jw's often don't seem to care or understand.

i would love being able to relate on something that has played such an important part of your lives (uh, understated - something your world is supposed to revolve around.

I know just what you mean, Lucid....I've been hesitant in previous relationships because "being raised a JW" can sometimes be a difficult subject to 'tackle'.....and it usually comes up, especially around holidays or whatever, when your JW family doesn't do anything or, in the case of those DF'd or DA'd, when your JW family won't acknowledge you.

Like you said, some just don't care or want to discuss...yet they still wonder why you are the way you are or whatever.

My current relationship is so refreshing because he WANTS to know about these things and wants me to discuss whatever I need to, especially if it makes me feel better. And, he is secure enough in his own beliefs, while not being pushy, that he has helped in alot in regards to how some non-JWs might view things, etc.

Before this relationship, however, I was thinking that the best thing would be to find another ex-JW who could relate to the various feelings one has and/or someone who would 'appreciate' the 'differentness' of growing up as a JW.....and who knows where they might be scattered. I still think it would be good for some ex-JWs and future relationships, etc.

i was 19, and my first time was a complete let down.

i envisioned that gothic romance motif, all about romance and love, i didn't know what i was doing, didn't know sex was like that.

This is sure true...I just was telling someone this week the almost exact thing....took me a while to figure that out, though.

I was 20 1/2 (almost Old Maid status for JWs in my neck of the woods) and on my first wedding night. We had ALMOST gone all the way before, but tried hard to keep under control before that....we were fucking idiots (excuse the pun) and didn't know what we were doing and it wasn't the most pleasant experience, I'm afraid to say.

Now, before my second JW marriage, I made sure that part was at least worked out first....before I said "I DO". LOL

Now, with no JWs or marriage, it's been the best ever. :-)

"Social Retardation"

question for those who were raised as jws.....after you left, especially if as an adult, did you ever feel like you were "socially retarded"?

i was married twice to jws, yet when i was single again as an xjw, i really felt like i didn't know how to get to know someone of the opposite sex, how to date, what to do or not do, what to expect or not expect.

my ex-husband talked to me the other day and he stated the same thing.

Question for those who were raised as JWs.....after you left, especially if as an adult, did you ever feel like you were "socially retarded"? I was married twice to JWs, yet when I was single again as an XJW, I really felt like I didn't know how to get to know someone of the opposite sex, how to date, what to do or not do, what to expect or not expect. My ex-husband talked to me the other day and he stated the same thing. Fortunately, I have made some very good 'worldly' friends over the past years who have helped me learn some very basic things and my current boyfriend has been wonderful......but, I look back at what I wished I'd learned when I was a teenager, not just sexual, but even just how to interact in a more normal manner.....I'm amazed at what I've learned just from this forum! LOL I think I will try to get my ex to check this place out, too....he's having trouble adjusting to relationships outside of being a JW (even though he never was a good JW to begin with..LOL).

worst site for any Convention

Oh my God! Yes, I went to Assemblies there.....it was always hot AND the wooden bench seating in some areas were just KILLERS on the old back.

Are you referring to the old Assembly Hall???? That's where I was baptized. Fortunately, my father was in Administration at the assemblies, so we got to park in a close lot......but even that short walk was absolutely scary! One of my friends didn't listen to the instructions to stay indoors, and got mugged when he went to the corner store for gum. Oh, the memories!!

Gas Prices

we have been informed in dayton that gas prices will go up by midnight by 4 dollars a gallon.

i hope this is another false alarm, but i am filling up in either case.

Here in central IL gas prices are rising....I waited in line for about 40 minutes at the last area station with gas at $1.77/gal...most are going to $2/gal...although I have heard that it was up to $3 in Springfield, over $4 in Bloomington, and $5 in Indianapolis. I can't confirm it, but that's what I heard....and every gas station had huge lines around here.....

I had the pleasure of attending the conference last year, when it was in Chicago. I didn't know what to expect....started having those 'district convention flashbacks', but it was very informal and nice. I got to meet some of the people I had met online....I even say a family from my old circuit, who had happened to come to the conference on a lark, as well as some attendees who even remembered my parents. It was a very pleasant gathering....not 'preachy'...I mainly went for the social aspects and was so glad I did. The group who are involved in this seem to be very caring, level headed people. And I didn't even get hit by a bolt of lightning for attending.....like I would have thought could happen when I was still a JW!! :-)

Even if you aren't a Christian, I would think that it would be nice to meet others who can relate to some of things we may feel or have experienced.

(I meet both Ros and RationalWitness there..."HI" to you both!!)
