Was the "Beware the Voice of Strangers" talk given at all the conventions?
by somebodylovesme inquestion for all ye wise folks in the know -.
was the "beware the voice of strangers" talk (http://quotes.watchtower.ca/bewarethevoiceofstrangers.htm) given at the district conventions last summer?
i'm not terribly familiar with how that works.

Thanks! I am going to write about how the Society prevents the exposure of scandals (pedophiles and UN) by restricting access to the medium through which such information is publicly transmitted. Since documentaries and the Internet are specifically cited in that talk, it seems like a reasonable deduction to me.
I love Rhetoric class...

Question for all ye wise folks in the know -
Was the "Beware the Voice of Strangers" talk (http://quotes.watchtower.ca/bewarethevoiceofstrangers.htm) given at the District Conventions last summer? I'm not terribly familiar with how that works. My hubby says the same talks are given everywhere, but I just want to make sure. I'm using it in a new little research paper I'm doing for school (ah, the Witnesses provided an endless source of research topics).
Thanks in advance.

What religious groups do the jws draw most converts from?
by badboy inwhat % of converts are former rc/luther/baptist etc etc?
-
somebodylovesme
What? I thought all JW's used to be crack addicts who have seen the light and changed their ways...
Oh, wait, no, I must have read too much of last year's Watchtower Calendar with all those before/after pictures.
I don't know what religious group most hail from... that is an interesting question, though! I wonder if they keep track?

Trying to fade slowly....
by nemo ini am trying to fade slowly, but am finding this increasingly difficult.
i can't sit through a meeting, i had to leave at the 1/2 the other day, because of my recent enlightenment, the hypocrisy is to much for me to take.
as i left you could see the looks on people faces, "oh she's just not spritual enough".

My husband was the JW, not me, so I will try to recount his timeline: Started having serious doubts in (roughly) 1996. Continued going regularly through 1998, was by then sure he needed to get out. Stopped "skipping" in 1998-1999, but kept going and was still active. Stopped attending regularly in 2002. Last set foot in a hall over a year ago.
He basically did that by finding things to keep him busy -- college, a full time job, an internship, etc. He was literally too busy to go. He was still friendly with everyone from the Hall and occasionally did social things with some people (although many shunned him for dating me, a worldly girl). He was entirely inactive by the early part of last year, but is not DF'ed or DA'ed. Fading really is the ideal situation, if you can pull it off. Worked for my hubby... I hope it works for you. Be strong!

Me, too, although I must often hide my secret love of that show. Thankfully, it is on four times a day in reruns here. (Our region must love Friends!)
(I am in love with Ms. Chnandler Bong)

Non-JW's experience
by Nosferatu ini found this kinda interesting.
it's not a news article, but an experience from a non-jw.

Come on, who really TALKS like this? "Your people are so joyful!" etc...
by somebodylovesme ini recently snuck a read of the km newsletter, which talked about assembly preparation.
aside from how ridiculous it is that they have to tell people not to push and shove (duhhh), i thought the quotes seemed a little, well, hokey.
i don't have it with me, so i can't quote it, but it was what i can guess is a commonly cited compliment: that the hotel manager/police/venue host said they are "thrilled to have jehovah's people" with them because "your people are so joyful" and so on.

Actually, I commonly hear JWs referred to as "Jehovahs".
ahhh yeah, I've heard that too. That, and "Jehovah Witnesses" without the possessive 's'.

It just seemed reeeeally extreme to me. I don't think I've ever heard a non-Witness talk like that.
Then, within a couple days, I was talking to a JW relative (in-law) who just got a new job. He claimed he got the job in part because the boss had previously employed another brother - and that this boss said he "loved to have Jehovah's people as employees because they are so joyful and so hardworking." yeahh... I can't imagine that the manager would say something like that, in such words. I can hear, "Oh, yeah, we had a 'Jovah Witniss' work here before, yeah, he was a good guy." I don't really trust this relative to be totally honest, and IMHO he's getting that kind of language straight from the literature.
So really... have you ever heard anyone outside the organization talk about Witnesses like that, in that pretentious phoney language? I never have. Most I hear is, "Witnesses? oh yeah, they go door-to-door and stuff, right?"

So what exactly IS an apostate?
by somebodylovesme ini was under the impression that an apostate was anyone who left the witnesses, was df'ed/da'ed, or was just actively opposed to them.
but i was reading in my hubby's old "reasoning book" that an apostate is one who professes to believe in christ (but not the jws), claims to serve god (but is not a jw), tries to pull away current jws or attack them.
so, by that definition, would someone who fades away and professes no religion still be considered an apostate if he or she didn't try to take anyone with them and did not attack the religion?.

There used to be a difference (in dubdom) between Opposers (non baptised) and apostates (baptised). I think the term is used much more broadly now, as Six refers to, as a catch-all derogatory word to include any person not in agreement.
Frighteningly enough, let me try to think like a dub/the Society for a minute. I am guessing that a broader application would be useful because it would go to show the reality of the "end times"? If EVERYONE who doesn't agree with the Society is therefore AGAINST them - apostates - then wouldn't that advance the idea that the world's going to, I don't know, explode in a ball of fire tomorrow?
Little Witch - Thanks for the link. Just goes to affirm how dangerous and divisive the Society is.
Danny - "maddening envy"? Oh, brother ... I'm sure all the ex-JWs are weeping that they don't get to read out loud the most boring magazines every week... The handful of meetings I went to told me I didn't want to do THAT very often.
The Outside World is Evil. Sigh.
