Wow that is a big change.... I had no idea they changed it to just read. I agree that isnt going to help much with trying to become a better public speaker. Reading a book in front of people is one thing, giving a speech is another.

#2 Talks
by dothemath inbrothers assigned #2 talks have no work to do at all as far as i can see.
if you're even a moderately good reader, you could look over it for about 2 minutes ahead of time.. when someone doesn't show up for the reading, and another brother fills in "short notice", there really isn't any noticeable change in the talk, or how it's read.
in other words, just about anyone could do it.. and then the counselor has to come up with terms about how well the brother read it.........etc., etc., etc.. the commendation is pretty much identical every week for this part.. the sisters have to do extensive research on their parts, but the younger brothers who don't do the #4 assignments have got it very easy..........for most, it's about a 5 min.

I have been out for 10 years now... but no one ever yelled at me about the visual aids back then.

Maybe I was a butt kisser, but I actually used to make visual aids and do my own research on the material. I would often spend 3 minutes going over my poster board and or passages from other scriptures. The only time I would not do this (cause I would always go over) was when I was being counseled on time!

How did you feel ?

I was born in truth. I am not sure if it has sucked all the "Christmas Spirit" out of me, but I honestly dont have to much enthusiam around the actual holiday itself. I don't mind getting to see family and friends of course and I do get joy out of watching nieces and nephews open up presents.
One thing I do love is to put up a ton of lights... but that is more a testosterone thing to me, seeing if I can add more and more lights each year. Last year we spent 3 days making a 3 color picture on the face of the house out of over 1000 lights.

Anyone Else?
by Viper76Man ini have been out of the religion for several years now (was rasied in it so have 18 years under my belt).... although i was never shunned.
it seems to me that lots of people have been ignored by members of the jw's after leaving.
i expected this to be the case and expected my family members to begin to keep there distance.

For those who asked... western side of Michigan.
Thanks for all your comments!
Another issue I often wrestle with is if I should ever share my findings with other witness family members. I have wieghed out the pro's and con's countless times and am interested to see what others have done and what the outcome was.
In one case my mother "seems" very happy and even if I disagree with what may be very wrong, why should I even attempt to take that happiness away from her.... of course then on the other side what if she could be even happier? etc. etc. etc. I am sure others have hade this same conflict

I have been out 8 years. I am from Michigan as well. This is really very interesting place and I am happy I stumbled accross it. It is great to see all these people come together to discuss various topics about a former religion. Often times I wondered if others had a similiar thought process to me and had left the religion and here they all are...

It seems to me that lots of people have been ignored by members of the JW's after leaving. I expected this to be the case and expected my family members to begin to keep there distance. It never happened to me. Maybe I am lucky? What else is weird is that even members of the congregation still talk to me and have even come to a party I threw. Religion was never discussed and they respect my position. Do I have some kind of a "rock and roll" JW hall? Has anyone else been still accepted as a friend after being kicked out? I am very curious to see why they are all still nice to me but have NEVER mentioned religion at all.
