Thank you, Pete, for the excellent information. I need to own some information on that, and the book you recommend sounds like a good place to start. And, nilfun, that link looks great!

we all remember the story in luke 22:44 where in jesus in agonizing prayer begins to sweat blood.
remember the extremely rare medical condition where a person being tortured can sweat blood that was cited as proof that the bible was true and how this should deepen our appreciation for the sacrifice of jesus?
well the footnote in the reference bible reveals that the earliest and best manuscripts of the nt do not have verses 43&44.

lots of love connections have been made on this board, and its about time we made a few more!
its been almost a year since there was a thread on this, and i figure its about time for an update.. so, are you single?
if so, post a little about yourself here - perhaps there's a love connection right here on this board!.
A excuse me ... I guess I've got a mail because of this sentence ... well I was not talking about asking for my pic. I'm sorry for the missunderstanding ...
Just for the record, the smart guy that mailed FrenchBaby wasn't me....but I'm sure there are a lot of guys here who wouldn't mind having a picture of you, you cutie!
today was a good day.
saturday, no witnessing, no meeting prep, no skirt and no dubs, no rush to do anything in particular, went to the mall to get some things, bumped into my brother (non dub) and his partner and my 3yo neice, had coffee with them and hubby, chatted, came home, kelpie dropped by to visit, went grocery shopping with my neighbour, ......................just to mention a few things.
doing what i wanted to do!.
Mysterious' comment made me think of this. I bought some video game from a kid at school one time. I remember, I almost never played it because it wasn't very fun. But my visiting uncle and his "annointed" wife came over one day and found it, I have no idea how. The artwork on the cover showed a dragon or maybe some pixie dust or something clearly demonic, so they hauled me upstairs for a lecture. Keep in mind, they never even put the game in to see what it was all about. They declared that I had to get rid of it, so in a plea bargain, I said I would trade it for a different game with a kid at school the next day.
What game did I get instead? Mike Tyson's Punchout. They had no problem with that one.

Mysterious:
Couldn't find the gospels online, but you might start with a book such as this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0679724532/qid=1072092204/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/102-7291814-0584925?v=glance&s=books
Or go to your library and research Gnostic gospels. That should lead you to the other gospels as well.

Wow, interesting post, Pete.
But the Society knows other things, such as that Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John are only four of many gospels of Jesus life, and that the historical evidence indicates strongly that they are wrong - that Jesus had a wife, and that he probably even had a child. But they could never talk about that.
In the latest issue of Time, there was an interesting article about those other gospels. It talked about the sect called the Thomasines, which presumably the disciple Thomas started. Thomasines were known for asking for concrete evidence, rather than simple blind faith. The article suggests that the account of doubting Thomas was added by John as a direct attack on the Thomasines.
"Unless I see the imprint of the nails, I shall not believe," says Thomas, made out to be faithless and stubborn. Then John has Jesus himself come in and chide him, "Happy are those who do not see and yet believe." Amazing how artificial that account seems in the historical context.
Interesting stuff.

well, i guess it will be official very soon, the announcement will be read and we will be "lost" into satan's world... my husband gave our letters to the elder who came to visit us with his wife the other day.
this is the 3rd time they came by in the last month, even after he told them he would call them if we wanted to "talk".
they saw the christmas tree shining through the door, brightly lit, so there could be no question that we had already taken some steps away.......but he still stayed for an hour trying to convince my husband that it was the "truth".. later that day my parents came over (i wasn't here) and he said my mom just looked at our christmas decorations with jealousy in her eyes.
RNG,
Congratulations on having the courage to do what you needed to do. I wanted to make a comment about your oldest son. My parents left the organization when I was in my early teens, and in response I started to take the meetings seriously, got baptized, and stayed in for another 10 years. (For those of you wondering how this jives with my earlier posts, my mom subsequently came back in.)
So I just wanted to suggest that you take extra special care with your son - I'd hate for him to pull a SeattleNiceGuy and spend 10 years learning that his parents were right.

christmas started way after chirst left the earth
What! You expect me to believe that people didn't celebrate Christmas until after Christ left the earth? I think you need to read your Bible, buddy. Look it up, it's in Santa 3:16.
And on the 25th day of the moon Decembri, you must take for yourself one clean tree and mount upon it a five-pointed star of unleavened bread. The man who does not observe this Festival of Meshia [Latin: Christmas] must be cut off from among the people. You must clear out what is bad from among yourselves. I am Jehovah.
Hope that clears things up.

Slaughtered a chicken and sacrificed it to the great snake-god while cutting himself ritualistically and dancing around the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Bad, which of course is what is represented by the Christmas tree.
I thought everyone knew that.

this is the first time i say, "merry christmas" back to someone.
For all those parents out there feeling guilty for not having done Christmas with their kids, I just wanted to agree with Princess. I have have absolutely no feelings of having missed out. None whatsoever. It would be like telling me that there are kids in Africa who celebrate National Gazelle Day and have such a great time. Sounds fun, but I don't really weep over having missed it myself.
I never felt deprived of toys because my parents made sure we did gifts on other occasions. Other kids got race cars on December 25, but I didn't particularly notice. I had a fort in my backyard! Everyone's experience, of course, is different, but I think parents can probably cut themselves a little slack.

I wanted to recommend a movie and see if any of you had ever seen it. The movie is called Defending Your Life, with Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep. It's a comedy, but it strikes at some important truths. The premise is that when you die, you don't go to heaven or hell. Instead, you go to a place called Judgment City, where you have to defend your life before a panel of judges. The sole criterion on which you are judged, however, is whether or not you conquered your fears.
The movie does a wonderful job of showing why a life muddled by fear - even that quirky, nervous kind (illustrated by Brooks' character) - is so less fully lived that one free from it (Streep's character). In fact, now that I think about it, it seems that the vast majority of world problems occur because of some form of fear. The film is great for those after-movie conversations. And since it carries a PG rating, you can even watch it with Witnesses and perhaps stimulate some thinking.
Has anyone else seen it? Good? Bad? ...Scary?
