You know what's funny is I've never had a desire to visit the Farm or Patterson, and I was even a Brooklyn Bethelite. But if I wasn't a Bethelite, I probably would have never bothered to visit, even when I was active. They actually recommend visiting Bethel as a sort of spiritual vacation. My wife and I were pioneers, so if we ever were able to afford a vacation, the last thing we wanted to do was go to Bethel.

Overseer Visits
by sandy inwhat the hell is the big deal about the circuit overseer's visit?
why does everyone have to drag their bible students and in active friends and family members to the meeting during that week?.
it is so lame and hypocritical.

Even when I was a pioneer it always bothered me how everyone came out of the woodworks for the CO visit. It drove me crazy how brothers would take days off work to go out in the week during the CO visit. I always thought, me and my wife bust our asses to work part time so we can go out in service and just because some higher up comes around, all the "spiritual" brothers had to make their token weekly service. If you can't be bothered to do it when the guy isn't around, then don't bother at all. Now it's just funny.

A couple of questions about summer conventions (spinoff)
by razorMind inbeing as i haven't been to a convention in years, i have a couple of questions:
do they still come out with that list of special-jw-rate hotels at the service meeting for the summer conventions?
also, i remember times when the list would be practically useless by the time my parents got home from that service meeting and started trying to make reservations.

As Rub pointed out, it is standard practice to get comp rooms. The other obvious reason they want everyone to use the list is it helps them negotiate the cheap prices that they get. If they had poor turnout it would make it tougher to negotiate for next year.
I have no problem with this.....BUT it always bothered me that it was almost a DIRECTIVE from the WT that you have to stay in their hotels, with reminders every year. I would have been much happier if they would just explain from the platform that it helps in negotiating the price and ASK the friends to use the list, so they know this is not some directive from Jehovah, as if he cares what hotel prices we get.

I hear what you're saying. You know what's funny is when I was a JW and people left I always felt bad for them because I knew there was a good chance they might feel like a social misfit in the world if their youth was spent being a good JW. At times I do feel like a social misfit still, but I've done alright. I was always outgoing as a JW though, even with worldly people.

Were Most Of The Elders "On The Ball" In Your Congregation?
by minimus ini think most of the elders relied on the "smart ones" to help them out.
my experience was that there was probably 2 or 3 "sharp ones".
the rest were dopey!

I was in a few different congregations, but most of my time was spent in 2. One I grew up in was pretty on the ball as far as I could tell. There was some inter-elder body rivalries, but all seemed pretty withit. The congregation I was in when I was older had very "organizational" society men. They were the most Unspiritualistic, unchrist-like men I knew, but they did everything by the book and to the "full extent of the law."

I know what you mean. I hate it when I close an account with a credit to me and I have to call and ASK them to pay me. I like to close accounts with a few cents credit on them and ask them to send me a check. It's not much payback but it makes me fell warm and fuzzy inside.

The Biggest Scandal In Your Congregation
by Hunyadi ini attended a notorious congregation as a child, the infamous winter gardens congregation!
my cousin and his best friend, both named joe, were elders, my cousin was the po and the other joe was a total loser suck up who wanted to be just like my cousin, joe.
what was even funnier, as i get off point a bit, is that "suck up" joe's wife, cathy, did everything she could do to get her pudgy lil self to dress, look, walk, and talk like my cousin joe's wife, clementine.

Because of the pressure to count time and "bring someone in" there were always weirdos being dragged to the meetings who should have been left severely alone.
LOL! That always cracked me up! We didn't have anyone that deranged, but I swear that every mentally handicapped adult that could at least walk seemed to go to our hall at one time or another.
In that same kh there was a fist fight in the foyer between a widowed jw father and married son who both fancied the same woman. I could go on.....
Who won?

m0nk3y, quite being so gay....
Sorry, I couldn't resist that! I've grown up using that term and never thought of it as offensive. But once I saw a gay man with a T-shirt that said "I'm too cute to be straight." And I thought it very offensive, as it inferred that straight guys aren't cute! (OK I'm not cute, but I don't need other people telling me that!) And now that you mentioned your offense at the word "gay" being used derrogatorily, and I can understand. Not sure what it has to do with MTV though...
Back on topic,
Ironically, I came from a great cong with really good elders (for the most part.) The biggest scandal was 2 elders getting removed for being too merciful with the youths wrongdoing in the congregation. One of them was a father of the kids in trouble, but according to other friends of mine who had gotten in trouble, his mercy had nothing to do with them being his kids, he was just a nice, loving guy....so they removed him.
