Praying to give thanks for a meal is much nicer and more positive than a person only praying when they *want* something from God.
to me it's like junkies praying to their dealer. thank you for the drugs i am dependent on, thank you so much.
who still find it strange years on to dive straight into your mail meal without 'giving thanks'?
i say main meal, because dad's prayers were always considerably lengthy before a main meal, and are an institution in every jw household.
even now after a few years i'm just about ready to tuck in when i find myself saying a simple thanks under my breath.

i always thought it was stupid to pray to thank god for a meal. for crying out loud if you believe in god then he's the one who made us dependent on food in the first place.
who says a prayer before filling their car up with gas? now that's what i'm interested in.
i personally don't really believe in it, well certainly didn't see anything yet that would convince me otherwise.
but browsing wtbs cd-rom i've come across quite deliberate reference about ancient ufo sightings which are intriguing.
even though later article goes through usual wtbs reasoning that tries to put a lid on any inquiry by "faithful christians" i cannot but wonder if they are themselves actually believing it.
Fiery Chariot - Fiery Horses
Need I say... Iron Horse
Edited to add: My view is that people describe things they see but don't understand with the only terms they know. Therefore Native Americans referred to a train as being an 'Iron Horse' when in fact it was a locomotive. Likewise I think in the Bible where they describe something as Horses of Fire & Chariot of Fire, it would not be unreasonable to think they are referring to some sort of flying craft which produces fire and a whirlwind when it takes off and lands, much like modern day aircraft do.

2 Kings 2
1 And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. 2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel. 3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. 4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. 5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. 6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on. 7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan. 8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground. 9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. 10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. 13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; 14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. 15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him. 16 And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send. 17 And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not. 18 And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not? 19 And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren. 20 And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. 21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land. 22 So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake. 23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

in 24 hours we all go the way of t.rex and his buddies.. how do you spend your last day of life?
seal everything i ever created or that proved i existed at all, in a box and bury it. i think i would probably then listen to some music, cook, eat a good meal, watch a movie, have a glass of wine, then go somewhere where i could see the sky and be alone.
just a thought from tonight's bible reading that kinda hit in a funny way.
in all my years i've never heard this scripture used like this.
*** rbi8 1 samuel 21:12-13 ***
Jehovah cannot lie... They even sing it one of their songs.
...but it's okay for those who worship him to lie in his name.
Sounds like something the JW would come out with.
i just read this on cnn.com and thought it was interesting:.
madison, wisconsin (ap) -- although wisconsin residents have voiced their support for a plan to legalize wild cat hunting, some legislators and cat lovers say they will continue their fight.. the proposal would allow licensed hunters to kill free-roaming cats, including any domestic cat that isn't under the owner's direct control or any cat without a collar, just like skunks or gophers -- something the humane society of the united states has described as cruel and archaic.. .... every year in wisconsin alone, an estimated 2 million wild cats kill 47 million to 139 million songbirds, according to state officials.
despite the astounding numbers, the proposal has been met with fierce opposition from cat lovers such as ted o'donnell.. o'donnell, who gathered more than 17,000 signatures in an online petition to oppose the plan, was joined at monday's meetings by scores of other animal lovers who held pictures of cats, clutched stuffed animals and wore whiskers.. .
the same reason there are those defending them (though the righteous ones are outnumbered, lol).
because it is an open forum of jw and former jw

When I left it was not to rebel against anything per se, it was just because what I thought and believed had gone further than the JW would have had me think and believe.
When I first left, I thought I was okay, but looking back I know I was close to the edge mentally. Since I had left for belief based reasons I spent longer than I should have at that time studying and reading and trying to find answers. I found few, and now many years later, I have become an adult (of sorts), and along the way I have done many things which break JW rules, they are normal things so I won't list them here, but they are all things that happened when they came naturally, not because I sought to do them to be a rebel, if that makes sense.
Leaving the JW's was a choice I made, I was not pushed or kicked out, to sum up how I reacted I can only say that though I may have thought it once, I was never really one of them, and so the way I acted I think was pretty much inevitable. What I did was what I was always going to do.
