there were lots of crazy ideas coming from elders, co's & do's in my neck of the woods, but one in particular sticks in my mind.

I used to go to Hellerby and can remember an idiot M.S. from our congregation being on the platform speaking of the dangers of T.V.

At the conclusion of his extremely animated talk he tried to sum up by delivering an admonition to be carefull about T.V. viewing and told the audience to WATCH IT!

There was an uproar of nervous laughter, stifled gigles and uncomfortable coughs as the M.S. realised what he had said and hit his brow with the palm of his hand and walked off the platform.

I don't recall him ever being invited to speak again.

You mean to say that there are people that would actually part with good money for that stuff?

I was/am planning a car boot sale when I break up from Uni and all of that stuff from my attic was/is planned to go there. I have a load of bound volumes and tons of other stuff that is packed away in boxes.

I may have to have a rethink.....how much does that kind of stuff sell for?

P.S. I could check whether I have 1980 volume but I'm afraid I'm too, too busy right now with revision and daren't go into the attic as I know I will be there all night........

Higher Education

well, let's try posting a topic.

one of the things i felt i missed out on while i was a witness, other than wild sex when young is higher education.

i quit hs to pioneer and now have just recently finished a college degree and am still working on my masters, but i find myself resenting that i have had to do this all at night and while in my forties.

I do feel the odd tinge of regret that I didn't do what I do now earlier.

But I know that I bring with me; to my education, my studies, to my work and to my clients, a wealth of knowledge, life experience and empathy that is unrivaled amongst my co-workers.

We may at times feel that we have been robbed of many things by adhering to those man-made rules but I turn that on it's head and use what I did learn there.....not those endless mind-numbing W/T studies and illustrations that were full of wishfull thinking, neither the TMS rubbish that we had to recite in various formats....or any of the so-called-knowledge that we were supposed to feel privileged that we had....

What I did learn there was valuable to me.

I no longer take anything at face value...I am now a critical thinker.

I don't accept what I am told anymore without further research...I study well.

I don't close my mind to other peoples opinions...I am well balanced.

I was hurt...I feel compassion.

I felt resentment...I know how to love.

I was ashamed...I am proud of my achievments.

I was trapped...Now I am free.

This to me is life after death.

jWs and creativity

its seems to me over the years as a dub i have met some very creative (albeit eccentric) folks in the org.

whats your thoughts on this?

do you think that the structure of the jws makes people more creative?

My experiences tell me that for the most part creativity was stifled, much for the same reasons that have been already mentioned.

Strangely enough though, whenever there was a wedding, all the musicians were rounded up to put on the free entertainment. In that instance of course there was all praise to Jehovah for these wonderful talents!

Hey ho.. summer ahead. Feeling happy that the worst is over, am pissed tonight...drank a wonderful bottle of chardonnay that has been staring me in the eye, every time that I open the fridge for the last couple of weeks!

How Do You Handle Dubs At The Door?

I have also moved from the area of the congregation that I used to attend.

Last time that I got a call from the local J.W.s, I told them straight about my feelings towards them. I told them to put me down as a do-not-call.

It worked! I no longer get disturbed by the J.W.s that have the smallest territory in my area, (it gets worked about every 6 weeks). I'm now after one of those cards that can be displayed in the window or door of property's. I used to come across them whilst on the ~~misery~~ ministry, in my J.W. days. One that says NO RELIGIOUS PEDDLARS blah blah blah....just to add repetion for emphasis...Ha, ha, ha.

Anyone in the Uk know where I can get one of those card from?

New Awake , "Lonely but not Alone"

I find the title of that magazine to be quite ironic!

Lonliness seems to sum up my experience of the organisation that claims to have a worldwide brotherhood of so-called loving brothers and sisters! My dealings with them have left me feeling that:

If you are too good looking..they dislike you.

If you have a nice home..they dislike you.

If you have "success" in the "ministry"..they dislike you.

If you own a decent car.. they dislike you.

If you wear nice clothes..they dislike you.

If your home has nice things..they dislike you.

If you give a good talk..they dislike you.

If you get invited round to a meal (and they don't)..they dislike you.

If your choice of music is not their taste..they dislike you.

If you watch T.V...they dislike like you.

If you miss a meeting..they dislike you.

If your answer to the watctower/book/TMS/service meeting study is too intellectual..they dislike you.

And the list goes on.

How can anybody feel loved and appreciated within such an environment?

Too Posh To Push

it seems that many uk women are opting to have their babies via a caesarian operation because they don't want to experience the pain of childbirth.. the national health service will only perform caesarians if there is a genuine medical neccessity for doing so.. women such as liz hurley and victoria beckham paid to have their babies via a c section even though it wasn't medically neccessary.

Well there may be medical complications that neccessitate the need for a cesarian section and thank goodness there is the medical 'know-how' to intervene in such cases. However, I do believe (having four of my own), that natural is the way to go if possible.

All of mine were born naturally and breathing techniques were employed to assist with the associated pain.

I breast fed immediately after delivery and continued to do so until I fell pregnant with the next child with the exception being the age difference in my third and fourth child! (Eight years is far too long to lactate)! I firmly believe that this strengthened the bonds between myself and my children.

Prats with microphones

in your congregation, did you ever have macho-wannabes on the microphones, strutting up and down the aisles handling the mikes as though they were aka assault rifles?.

we had a few tossers like this.

On a similar but maybe not exactly the same note:

There was a M.S. in my old hall that, because of a physical disability, had to be pushed up and down the ramp at the side of the platform in a wheelchair.

On a day to day basis he displayed such a nasty and vindictive personality streak which was quite apparent to many and for the most part he often tried to hide it behind the facade of being extremely humble...especially when he was giving a talk or had a part in the T.M.S. or whatever.....

Whenever he 'got pushed' up to the platform and another 'brother' positioned his wheelchair and microphone at the correct angle.....there would always be that bellow of "Thanks Brother" directly into said mike, obviously for the benefit of the congregation to think what a wonderful, humble person he was. I used to sit and cringe as his personality would miraculously transform from nasty bastard to humble bugger with those two words.

Bit of a rant there, apologies for going off on one, but isn't it strange how reading a post can trigger memories that have laid dormant for years?
