just wondering what exactly americans (u.s.a) are taught about their country in school .do you really salute a flag, do you swear allegiance to the country.
are you taught that you fought for freedom, and that america is the land of the free, etc etc?
do you actually believe what you are taught?

Cicayrix mentioned, 'healthy debates.' This is the point, people close their minds to opposing views and as such prevents anyone from having healthy debates. Their attitude is, 'It's my way or the highway.' Such an attitude has no balance.
As I mentioned earlier, at our morning coffee meetings we trash out community gossip and poltical views. The interesting aspect of our conversations is, it always ends up being humorous.

i think bill get's a raw deal.
everyone, it seems, loves to bash him and microsoft but he does actually seem to do a *lot* of good though and has been incredibly generous.

Gypsy, what issues are these people arguing about? Yes, everyone wants to be right, what a sham/shame. As the saying goes, "I may not always be right but I'm never wrong!"
Yes, I would like them to present their issues and offer solutions. Being in front of an audience and presenting your views is totally different than spewing out opinions on a forum. Armchair politicians? Right on!

yet, when i found this hymn book, "sing praises to jehovah", i was shocked to find war songs in it, such as ... "gaining victory over the world", page 3.. "god's warriors are advancing", page 39.. "proclaiming jehovah's day of vengeance", page 189.. "see jehovah's army"!

Bis/gypsy, how many people are interested in politcs? Well, lets put it this way, I posted about my running for council in my home town this summer,and you know how many responded to the thread? Less than a handful!
Every morning begining from 5AM to 8AM I go to the local coffee shop and we talk about anything and everything, of course poltics is right at the top. One of my buddies got in office as a councilperson and he sits with the crew and we trash away. Politics is the norm with me. I find politics is just about everything. I must admit, there is more to politics than what meets the eye, it takes a lot more than just reading controlled newspaper coverage.
The power struggles and back-biting that goes behind the scenes needs to be experienced by those who never saw politics in action. As I said in my thread, if your going into politics, you better be a thick skinned person.

Disciplining out of rage is not reasonable discipline. Some children just need to be looked at with a stern face and they get the message, others need more than a stern face or words. My children survived and they live a normal life.
Amazing how we can talk about disciplining children and here we are grown-ups fighting in bars, express road rage, killing one another over family conflicts or community affairs and having international conflicts without having second thoughts about who should dicipline us! When does it start and when will it end? Excuse me for slightly getting off 'course,' but then again I play golf don't I?
