He didn't want to seem like an idiot for saying "I'm leaving" only to reply and argue more on this thread. I've noticed that most people who put up a "I'm leaving" thread usually always come back anyway.

ok, this thread is so old that I don't think he's ever going to see this response, but here's what I think...
if they'd only recall that wathchtower a few years ago that said that it was okay to go to college as long it was so that you can serve God more fully without ecomomic problems holding you back
They may tell you all these reasons not to go, but what they don't tell you is you're really on your own financially and if 20 or 30 years down the road (gasp! the new system isn't here yet?) you can't make it financially, you won't get a formal apology. Nobody will feel sorry for you.
What it comes down to is this is your decision and yours alone. They get frustrated they can't do anything, really, to stop you from going to college, so they go overboard with the pressure tactics they use to dissuade you from going. But at the same time they'll tell you that it's your own responsibility to make a living. So if it's your responsibility, then you should make all the decisions relating to it, because you will be the one to either benefit from this decision or not.
It's just like when a sister told me I am not allowed to have a 2 door sports car, I asked her if she was gonna pay for my car? no? well then, she didn't get to make any decisions relating to it then, was she?

Have you ever thought maybe it's not to manipulate people......but because someone CARES where YOU are going to spend eternity after you die?
Well, what I meant by that is, I don't think it's the people, the everyday believers, like you, who are manipulative so much as the religious leaders who propagate this fear, in whose best interests it is to create an atmosphere of fear and guilt. They have people shaking in their boots over this stuff, and they can't even prove it. Oh, and they make a little money at it too. I see that works out swimmingly for them.

I admit I need to bite my tongue sometimes on this board with the whole Christianity thing. I respect others' views, but I sometimes don't respect the way they try to manipulate others into believing those views.
It's interesting what you said about we'll know the truth one second after we die... you know, that's true. I've been thinking about how there's really no absolute proof out there one way or another, and I guess I'll just have to wait for that day to come when I do find out (or when I don't find out?). Anyway, the fear of death is worse than death, as the Roman saying went. You are relying on fear of the unknown in making your argument. Looks to me like some people just cover all their bases. I just don't see the need, that's all. If there is a god that will curse me to hell for it, then remind me why I would want to serve that God.

no prospects for the future except getting old and dying...most likely alone.. all seems kind of pointless sometimes, doesn't it?
Most of my life I believed I was never going to get old....never get divorced...never have to worry about retirement or putting my kid thru college....my parents were never supposed to die and my sisters were supposed to love me forever.... Sometimes I just get tired...and scared...

i went with my older daughter to see "ella enchanted" this weekend.
it's an updated version of the cinderella story, and was very entertaining.. .
shortly after ella's birth, her fairy godmother gives her the "gift" of obedience.
That sounds like a pretty interesting movie, and a pretty good thing for young girls to see. I like the way you applied it to blind obedience toward the WTS.
