amccullough, it is hard truth that Yate's husband was a JW and that Laree's Slacks parents were both JWs. You are quite the Watchtower apologist, aren't you. I have many loved ones who are JW family and friends and am not attacking "all" JWs but rather the Watchtower misleadership which also tries to cover up it pedophilia policy and its 10 year liason with the UN even while it kept denouncing the UN. Out of my face.

I'm here. Do I count too?
Keep at the UN thing. The sooner JWs discover the Watchtower boys had a 10 year liason with the UN even while denouncing it, the better.
I guess lots of us wondered a second or two why they'd put Bethel headquarters so close by the UN. Now we know.
Also their keeping sin records on all JWs down in the Brooklyn Bethel basement and more recently typing them into a computer database is a dandy. Soon, with a single click they can sell out dirt information to the UN or any other agency they want.
Reminds me of how in Hitler Germany the branch head Frost easily called all elders to Berlin, got information on them and their real fast then snitched to the Gestapo. The brave JWs were regular members, not branch traitors.
The same happened in the Communist Soviet Union. Elders went to Moscow, then shortly the KGB rounded up JWs and sent them into Siberia.
Anytime intimate details are concentrated in the guise of efficiency, down the road there comes a time when it can easily be given away.
If the Watchtower boys wanted to work with the UN's committes then they should have told all the elders and non-elders, but of course they wanted to have their cake and eat it too.
Shine the light, Belbaby! Let it shine, shine, shine!!!

Dateline Update
by silentlambs inon sunday night i wrote the dateline update, since that time several questions have been raised regarding the dateline story.
i will not be able to answer all questions raised or try to defend the basis of the statements made in the dateline update.
i can say that we are getting very close to an airdate, so close i can taste it.

It's not the least bit surprising they tried to wedge in between you and Dateline, though unsuccessfully, particularly here so close to the story being aired. We all appreciate Dateline's professionalism.
Question. You said to thank Dateline. What's the best email or phone number for doing so? Shall we thank them right now or would it be better to do so right after it has aired?

The Red "Cross"
by Will Power inseeing the new logo for the red cross today, it dawned on me that the wt might not have such an aversion to blood as much as what they call a demonic symbol - the cross that represents the organization that eventually provided a blood service.
back in the old days of the wt, blood transfusions were not an issue, mostly because they weren't done.. their ridiculous stance on other organizations such as the ymca, salvation army, united nations, show that their aversion to the red cross must also include the symbol of the cross and judging by the mandates & phylosophy of the red cross below (from their web site), they might have seen them as competition!.
the distinctive red cross emblem, first used in 1864, symbolizes our neutrality and humanitarian mandate.

The sad thing is 60 Minutes over the weekend reported a major coverup. For one thing Red Cross officials deleted from the notice of potential donors an audit report which stated at great length that the money being taken in was not being accounted for property. We commend the good deeds of the Red Cross but such things and your (the Red Cross not you personally) not doing any better to aid the 911 victims in timely and best fashion will now cause some withholding of donations. Get your act together and the donations will return.

Somebody with a screen name kind of like Presiding Overseer Coachroach (or was it PizzaOverCoachroach??) said Dateline would not dare to air the pedophile coverup among JWs because Watchtower legal hounds had jumped onto NBC and or tried to break its support for airing of the documentary on Dateline.
Now I believe NBC is much smarter than that. It has its own reputation to protect. If it didn't stick to its guns and let Dateline air the JW story some other film crew (60 Minutes or whatever, even some preacher with a camcorder) would and would include in their own documentary that NBC had been intimidated, backed off and so become part of the coverup.
So,... and I'm really writing this for the Watchtower boys who are reading it as much as anyone else... "you got BIG BIG problems, boys!"
P.S. Brooklyn, also feed this back out to the goon Elders seraphing the pedophile-infested halls locally: get off our backs! The kinds of things done locally to pressure us to shut up locally is going to burst into print too. Now can you r-e-a-d this? Believe it. But if not, then go back to kindergarten.

There's the written policy that looks fairly reasonable though it allows loopholes and there's the unofficial policy that is actually used to cover up for Big Mama. Same as with Catholicism for centuries though commendably Pope John has been making some changes and the news media has helped greatly. Coverups like these are shameful.

SHOCKING FACTS TOLD OUT OF LOVE TO THE CONGREGATION & PUBLIC: The Watchtower Society (WTS) over Jehovah's Witnesses (JWs) cover up child molestation & let pedophiles go door-to-door http://www.silentlambs.org. They say God opposes the UN but, until exposed, in 1991-2001 were a formal UN associate not just to use the UN's library as proved if you will read the Nov 22, 1998 Awake magazine closely & http://www.unhchr.ch/udhr/materials/articles.htm for the 2nd entry there. 1 Cor 6:1 only says judge "trivial" things as in business, James 2:4-13 calls judging harmful, & Paul says the "majority" (2 Cor 2:6) followed his advice to shun a wrongdoer, meaning a minority chose not to & yet he nowhere condemns them, yet the WTS has formal Judicial Committes destroying families via numerous formal renderings of disfellowshipment (shunning).
Acts 15:20 says abstain from blood but 1 Sam 14:32-5 says Saul's army ate unBLED meat to not starve & no verses show God not forgiving them. Christ says God also forgave David's eating temple holy bread & that God wants Mercy Not Sacrifice. (Mt 12) The May 22, 1994 Awake tells of 26 JW kids who died without transfusions, & by common sense in massive bleeding as in car wrecks blood expanders won't save lives http://www.ajwrb.org. About 3 JWs die daily earthwide from the unscriptural policy! (Blood On The Altar by David Reed) Why must anyone be endangered? JWs can form nonWTS groups united by LOVE, join another group or decrease donations & support to the WTS. Please make & use copies of this for years ahead. It was written out of love for our JW families & friends as well as the public's - yours too!

Easter, What Is The Real Truth
by Candle ineaster, what's the real truth: previously, and as found in most encyclopedias, most scholars took the view of "the venerable bede" who in 8th century england speculated that the name easter may have come from the name for the anglo-saxon goddess eastre.
but closer research shows several other possibilities.
one is that the name more likely came from the latin for "white week" that spring week when people wore white to be baptized as christians.

How things are used instead of where they came from is what is important. For example whether I eat balanced meals or unhealthily eat too much for meals is more important than if the food stuffs were grown by atheists, Buddhists, Christians etc or a mixture of those. I will also try to see that the point about name days, month names, wedding customs, money etc gets into an updated version. The article did mention that eggs etc have also been used by non-Christians, so that point is already covered.

Ex JW Support Group - any suggestions?
by Beck_Melbourne ini just thought i'd put this to the multitude and invite your suggestions or some feedback, as i am thinking about forming a support group for ex jw people in my area.
my motive is based on my own experience when exiting the borg...and how isolated and lonely i felt when i left.
i was lucky enough to have one family member who had left the borg a few years before me.

Melbourne, thanks for offering to help people. This may help you:
---------
Common sources of support for people in general as well as persons traumatically exiting a religious situation in particular are government-sponsored Social Services and in some communities various churches. So you may begin by contacting those two sources and ask what kinds of assistance they already offer, if any, that would be helpful for exiting persons, and write down what they say as well as the names of their representatives, their phone numbers and emails for easy reference. After discovering what they already offer you will know better what kind of other support is needed. In general, though, someone who has been kicked out of their home over religious differences may be in need of not only some kind words of hope and encouragement, but also some short term material support.
For example a kicked-out JW (or Mennonite etc) may need a toothbrush, walked through how to set up and keep their own bank account, temporary shelter if not in a home then at least by being allowed to park and live in a car by your home, etc.
The emotional and spiritual components should also not be ignored.
Insofar as the emotional goes, it may be better to not tell them to talk about what happened so much as to offer examples from your own experience or that of others, then "if" they want to reveal things they will feel freer to do so.
Some people do not want to talk about it and for them that may be the best way to cope, whether you agree and like it or not. Those who do talk may not simply talk but vent anger and frustrations. Decide in advance if you yourself are emotionally strong enough to hear it.
If not, then gently let them know upfront that you are there to help them, but unfortunately not able to bear hearing a lot of negativity that may cause yourself discomfort or flashbacks. Be prepared to suggest either a trained a counselor or, after you have done this for a while, someone whom you know from experience has been able to hear such venting in the past.
Spiritually it is normally not wise to try to convert an exited person to your own beliefs or you will probably be resented as a parasite trying to prey on them in a time of depression. Instead emphasize that you wish to assist regardless of what they do or do not believe.
You may mention (if such applies) that you still read the Bible and are a Christian, or they may be able to easily figure that out on their own from seeing publications etc which you may have. Also on their own they may or may not ask about your beliefs, which if any church you attend or would recommend and the like.
Depending on the individual and their situation, they may or may not immediately or later appreciate an offer to sit and enjoy reading or hearing a few scriptures with you in a non- or trans-denominational manner. But, again, above all, don't be pushy but rather be available.
As a Support Group person, you are offering to act as a friend, not a Church Group converter. If however you feel you must emphasize the need to convert exited persons to your own religious beliefs, or in fact are a Preacher, Minister, Priest or other clergy person, then you need to make that gently but clearly known from the beginning to be honest to both yourself and those whom you seek to help.
You will need to advertise the fact that you exist. On bulletin boards, in brief newspaper ads etc you can give a further contact telephone number and or email. The key (note carefully) is to advertise regularly.
If you speak with a person over the telephone you can tell much about them so as to determine how best to help them.
For example, an agitated person who has just exited may contact you while high on drugs or alchohol, and you may see that it would not be best to then tell them they can come stay in your own home for a few days where they might pose a threat to yourself or other family members. Having the needed names, phone numbers and addresses ready, you can get such a person help from a social service or at least postpone speaking and meeting them in-person until later when they are more sober. On the other hand, the person may and indeed probably will be very upset but clearly pose no danger and you might be able to immediately and personally do more for them.
Your sometimes having to refer people to professional does not diminish your own role as a person who actually was in the same religious group. Indeed your insights may prove crucial, even life-saving for you may be able to get through to and positively help those who feel severely crushed and depressed in such a way that someone who has a PhD in counseling but was a never a member could not. Still, know when to involve a professional.
Even if never formally trained as a counselor then by attending free or inexpensive training sessions or talking to the experts and reading whatever they may offer, you may be able to learn a lot, for example, how to recognize if a person has suffered a mental break-down, is clinically depressed, etc. Indeed, with time you might even decide to become certified as a professional.
Regardless, try to be realistic and flexible and also become progressively knowledgeable so as to help more and more persons who are survivors of abusive religion.
--------Melbourne, I am part of the internet Free Christians movement which offers a free newsletter (Free Christians News) on the Bible, relgion, science, health etc and for those wanting it also new spiritual fellowship based on LOVE rather than forced sameness of beliefs.

JW Molestation info needed for UK radio show
by home_and_dry inhi all.. i recently emailed a radio dj here in the uk who has a late night phone in show.
he is a great bloke, not afraid of touching issues that others won't.. i told him briefly about the peodophile issue amongst jw's.
he replied, saying that he was very interested in the issue and has asked for more info.. i feel that i am not the best qualified to act as spokesperson on this, and there are plenty of people here who can explain the situation better than i can.. so what i am asking is for any of you to explain the issue here in this thread.
