Higher Education - do you know any witnesses who are College Lecturers?
by eyeslice init has become increasingly apparent that the society is currently taking a hard line on university/college education for the young.
however, this policy must put some witnesses in an awkward position.
i know of an elder who is a prominent university professor, in fact he is a world authority in his field of work, which is a medical area that seeks to better the lot of humankind in general.

I'll have to confess, I studied with this hypocrit before his baptism into the cult, and it was during the mid-seventies when JW anti-college fervor was high:

Elders don't close their eyes when they pray
by outofthebox inwhen i was a hardcore jw, i closed my eyes and paid attention to the prayer, because i believed we were communicating with god.
what a privilege!
now, it has been some time since i closed my eyes when the jws pray.

What bearing does closing one's eyes have upon praying? I pray with my eyes wide open and sometimes full of tears.

I'm a security professional and licensed locksmith. I've 'bumped' cylinders (locks) and have taught the technique to other locksmiths. It absolutely *does* work on pin tumbler locks cylinders. Someone in this thread asked whether or not bumping works on automotive locks. Some yes, some no, but bumping's not the easiest way to swipe autos anyway, so carjackers don't normally depend on bumping to take what's yours. There are other, easier means of entry which completely bypass the locks. Most homesteads are far 'softer' targets to forced entry than most autos are, so the low-life vermin population who want to steal your belongings depend upon force and stealth rather than any brains or skill to break into your house.
You can buy the most bang for your buck by requesting a premise survey from your local police department. They'd probably rather spend a few minutes giving you preemptive security advice than writing up your burglary report after the fact. If that's not an option, hire a local locksmith to perform a premise survey for you. In most cases a given security budget would be better spent on hardware other than new locks. Once the lock itself becomes the weakest link in your security, then it becomes the most economical area for improvement.
Yes, there are some locks which operate in such a way as to render them immune to "bumping," and those are relatively expensive. They also deserve to be surrounded in a similarly expensive and robust lockset and installed/adjusted by a locksmith, otherwise you're wasting your money. A much less expensive route would be to use a restricted keyway, available from one of your local lockies. I'd be happy to recommend a locksmith local to anyone if you'd like to PM me and tell which city or cities you're near. -

What prompted the whopper of all Flip Flops? (Sodom & G. resurrection)
by Open mind inin pre-studying my watchtower for this sunday, (with mary's assistance on v's thread of course), i was reminded of something i've wondered about re: the whole "will the residents of sodom & gomorrah be resurrected?
" question.. to my knowledge, this one holds the watchtower record for most number of flip-flops.
please correct me if i'm wrong.

Please open your mind to this suggestion. I see a "spirit directed" organization in the WTB&TS, and you equate their 'differing light' as a series of stupidity. You won't deny the WTB&TS is really an organization, will you? I'll bet you're hung-up on the spirited-directed part, am I right? What's to question?
The Watchtower, from early times, has likened itself to a lighthouse-like entity, to the point of making it their masthead magazine's cover illustration for years. The Watchtower's light has differed in its illumination over the decades (putting it as politely as I can word it), just as a lighthouse's light-output differs or flashes to distinguish itself *as* a lighthouse. Ask any sailor: lighthouses are placed on rocky shoals as a warning to prevent a catastrophic shipwreck. They're not something you sail your vessel towards, to the very contrary.
The irony and coincidence going on here is too rich for me to swallow the idea it's mere happenstance or lack of spirit direction. Damn if I don't see spirit-direction at work! Sailor take warning. -

There's nothing you're missing -- and nothing's special about seven versus six inches. I just picked a seven-inch dimension to frustrate a Google attack. Any sized sphere greater than seven inches in diameter can be drilled straight through leaving behind a seven inch long hole by precisely adjusting the hole's diameter to suit. A seven inch long hole through a Jupiter-sized sphere would have to have an enormous radius to leave behind only seven inches of planetary surface, but it can be performed mathematically or numerically. A Sun-sized hole would require an even larger hole diameter.
The sphere's volume must be a constant no matter how large or how tiny the hole's radius, otherwise there would be no unique solution to the puzzle; so 49pi works for a seven-inch hole, 36pi works for a six-inch hole and so on. The formula's the same. I love the elegance of the solution to this puzzle.
