Mental Hammocks and Safety Nets
by Qcmbr ini was discussing the nature of faith with another lds member and they were quite horrified to hear my take on religion (in particular lds) and we batted around the ideas a lot but one really interesting thought caught my attention: .
for faith to have 'power' it must be in something real (e.g.
faith may motivate you to flip a lightswitch but it's wasted if there isn't any power to the house) ergo the search of religion / faith / philosophy must be for real things in which to have faith in (so we don't end up blowing ourselves up in crowded market places or praying to the duvet) however, we are constantly stopped from finding truth by our mental hammocks and safety nets that will not let us find solid mental ground.

The Bible is the Safety Net I had to get rid of.

The Colour Green / Am I just a cynic: Re Earth Day.
by Guest with Questions infirst, i want to state that i am not against protecting our planet and i think we all should do what we can to conserve and be more environmentally conscientious.. i dont have facts but this whole earth day concert doesnt seem to sit right with me.
is the green earth about the environment or is it about green money, are some environmentalists really green bigots or am i green with envy?
im sure there are many who are sincere but have they thought out what this event contributed to the pollution of the earth?

You're not a cynic, you've just learned to see through the hype and hypocrisy. It's an advertising gimmick. The only thing these sorts of events do is entertain.

One in five Americans thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth
by Illyrian innot intended to offend anyone but i found this article very interesting, if true this may go a long way in explaining why religion flourishes in many places across us of a. .
ny times article.
scientific savvy?
-

Whether the Earth revolves around the Sun or not is considered irrelevant to daily living by most people. What about the scientific knowledge of the engineers who place the town's water supply downhill from a stockyard? Or the water intake downstream from the town's sewer?
Wasn't education supposed to correct this sort of problem? It's obvious, as other posters have said, that our schools are failing.

I hope you added some supplementary comments on those invitations. Just think of how bad you would feel if someone in that office went to the D.C. and converted! Think of the mileage the WTS would get out of that! LOL ;)
