How Well Educated Are You?

12 years of schooling (and never stayed back, either) for me.....and you?

Finished required 12 years of schooling, graduated with honours from high school. Did a few semesters at a local college but didn't know what I wanted to do so went to a business college and got a diploma to get into the workforce. Got a job.

Was just thinking about going back to college/university to become a teacher when I was 'witnessed to' and decided that I would 'teach' that way (Bible studies...).

While still in, I took some night school/Saturday courses (a certificate to complete my Technical Writing required one Saturday a month for 7 months and I still got flack for it, even though I kept my FS hours up). While still in (right before I left) I started back to university to work on my Bachelor's (something I'd always wanted to do, and decided that I wasn't going to not do something I really wanted, especially when it wasn't unscriptural or anything). I got ALL sorts of flack from my sister and others in the cong. about being distracted from "Theocratic Activity." By then, considering how I'd been abused and left by the majority of the cong., I wasn't overly worried about their opinion.

Since I could transfer my earlier college credit, I'm now 1/4 of the way to my Bachelor's.

JWs can't spell

i was reading some comments on randy's site, and lately i've been noticing a trend - a majority of jws can't spell.

i've seen them come on here and their spelling is very poor.

here's an example: what a nut case!

Joker: Studies? Data? Conclusive proof? Kind of a blanket statement you make without anything concrete to back you up. At least the person who started this thread had provided an example. Your comment *looks* like a knee jerk reaction and a deliberate dig at those of us who are no longer involved in the religion of *your* choice. That would be a very unloving and small-minded thing to do to another of God's creatures, don't you think?

General: I'm hesitant to put spelling and grammar categories onto a "JW" or "ex-JW" label. I'm working on a Bachelor of English (and so very "into" English, spelling, grammar and the like), and find that most people on message boards don't worry so much about that kind of thing. Personally, I do so much "proper" writing for school and work and my home business, that when I'm on internet boards I'm not as picky with myself, or others (hey...everyone needs a break sometime! *grin*).

I took a creative writing course where the teacher said it's okay to break the rules of spelling and grammar...provided you know what rules you're breaking. In other words, intentionally choosing to 'slack' can be part of your own creativity. I'm not saying that's what people do...in fact, I think in most cases people don't really learn the rules in the first place. I do think, along the lines of the poster, that a lack of higher education certainly doesn't work in anyone's favour.

I understand the Watchtower Society is now advocating for 'some' higher education...it's never a bad thing and I'm glad they're not setting this generation of JWs up like they apparently did the last one, who they told to not bother because 1975 was coming...

A Snare and a Racket????

anyway, what exactly is the meaning of this word "racket" that they love to refer to?

Outside our distriction conventions there was always a man with a sandwich board who used a megaphone to declare that the "Watchtower was a snare and a racket." As a new JW I was told to not look him in the eye and that he was an apostate.

It was later that I found out about how 'we' used to call religion a "snare and a racket." He, at least to me, made some sense by that point.

Hmmm. Maybe that was the beginning of the end for me. hehe

The Bethany Hughes story is very interesting for me (the one where the father is suing). I know all about it...from the JW side of things. Now, being out, I see a totally different side.

Nono..Nathan, I was responding to Dorothy's post to explain that mine were the WT BS things that would have no inherent value or older books to pick apart (now, there are newer books...hehe). You're fine, and your post is more than welcome and makes sense to be included here (although that last phrase I don't think makes sense *runs off to get more coffee*).

And to verify, all my CDs are now GONE. If anyone else has CDs they want to get rid of, feel free to toss your post up too. Or anything else of sale.

I have new(ish) books as well that I intend to get rid of, but not yet. Once I figure it out, I may offer those up too. Still deciding.

Edit: Oh god, some days I just am scattered...I'm calling it "bride brain." I read your "WT BS CD" and was thinking it was the Official WTS cd like I have, but you gave it the (appropriate) title of being BS (aka bull-crap). I have things bass-ackwards.

WTS official = bad (but inherent value in having it for those who want to expose them)

Nathan's info = good (and fills the gaps)

Undaunted Danny's post reminded me of something that also opened my eyes. It was in February/March of this year (basically at the time I disassociated). I am trying to build my business as a Technical and Business writer and one of my clients, a non-profit organization, asked me if I'd consider doing some writing work for his son. Newsletters and some press releases/promotional material. It was quite weird, because his son is a pastor in a church and it was church info I was working on.

Part of what I did was speak to both pastors in the church (via phone interview). I can recall feeling VERY leery of talking to them (still hadn't quite realized the WTS was as bad and still had the 'get out of Babylon' mentality), but after listening to the many many (many many many) community involvement activities; from schooling, to supporting low income Mexican coffee farmers, to taking in homeless people and their families for a week at a time for a specific program, to the parish nursing program they were expanding to outreach into the community (to non-parishoners!), to the interfaith community they were a part of...well, let's just say that I was COMPLETELY poleaxed at what an 'active' faith could accomplish. And this was a congregation of 120 members or so...many of them senior.

I wasn't raised in a religion, joined JWs at 21 and am now 35 and out. In light of what the WTS *could* be doing with their time, money, additional assets, it absolutely disgusts me that they don't do even the basic Christian things. The majority of the JWs I know are quite comfortable and don't go out of their way to help others. Sick.

Shamus! Of course! When I read your post about them locking the doors on Sep 11/01 I thought...that doesn't make any sense. I heard that they helped and provided food and shelter etc.

Then I realized...I heard that via the WT/meetings.

It's bizarre how much of this has shaped my perceptions and it's only when I give it conscious thought that I am able to attibute it to the correct place. I hadn't thought of Sep 11 since I left the 'troof,' so hadn't thought about the lies probably told around that too.

They really are quite sheisty in their practices aren't they?

The WT CDs are the ones provided by the WTS for active and in good standing JWs to do their personal reasearch. It has mostly current documents. The difference between 1999 and 2001 is any publication that came out in 2000/2001 is updated as well as a few 'older' publications added (as well as some features).

Like I fool, I kept wondering why they didn't put the older older older publications that weren't readily available on it...and why they wouldn't be a priority for them because with so many new ones in the organization they surely wouldn't have access to those 'precious spiritual truths.' DOH!

In any event, Terry and Ohiocowboy asked for the 2001 and the 1999 one is still up for grabs.

Terry and Ohio, I'll pm you for details.

I have CD copies of the WT library 1999 (qty: 1), and burned copies of the WT library 2001 (qty: 2). I have no interest in them. I doubt most people here do either.

However, that being said, someone may want to use them in their own personal research, or for picking apart the WT doctrine etc, or proving that they change things from print to cd medium. Or for those who use the texts to prove/disprove things, they may find it useful to have it online and easily accessible/transportable to a word processing software.

If you're interested, I'm NOT selling these. I will GIVE them to whoever asks first...and if no one asks, circular file it is!

Depending on where you are, we can negotiate shipping (I have a wedding soon, saving up!) hehe
