Commencement Exercises ??

we received the following card in the mail today from a young us friend:

the senior class of xx high school announces the commencement exercise <at time> <at place>... .

she also enclosed in the envelope a couple of pretty photos of herself.

We know she's graduating high school this summer,

Yes, the commencement exercises is the actual graduation ceremony for her entire graduating class and what you received is an announcement of such. It is generally not an open invitation to all to actually attend - most often there would be tickets for your admittance to the event enclosed if you were expected to be able to attend. There is usually a limited amount of guests each graduate can invite.

My son is graduating also next month and today he picks up his announcements to send to friends, relatives - which I hesitate to send.......because I know that many folks do feel an obligation to send $$$ and I struggle with this aspect of it. I had one relative who really flipped out when she received this announcement from my sibling as their child graduated, since none of them had ever given her the time of day what with her being a "worldly one".....and it was very obvious this was a call for cash. Depending on one's relationship with the graduate, this feeling would of course not be uniform.

I hope those we send them to will just be sharing our joy in knowing that our son actually made it to the day, despite his learning disability.

A Happy Graduation to all closing that High School chapter of their lives!

edit: I may need to go back to High School - deficient in spelling!

The last time I pulled into a KH parking lot, with my wife (sans the children), she told me she just could not go in.

It was a clarifying moment that I chose to learn from, not control, and it solidified my relationship with her.

Smart guy eh? It's THOSE that take their leave and many are to be found here on JWD that I'm sure you'll enjoy interacting with.

update in the life of me

ok its a "my hair is too long" issue again.

i have the choice of attending all meetings until college if i just keep my hair combed and packed down so it looks short.

my dad will pay all the bills i have and i can keep/save all the money i make until college.

Excuse me, but.....this has got to be a joke! I mean, I don't put it past a JW parent, but.......gawd........what is the point? Appearances are all JW's care about.

As I was asked: "How to you think you are perceived in the congregation?"

I was then told I was perceived as "shy and timid" which is 100 miles from reality!

Perception is not reality.

Be true to yourself as what else have you?

i would have gotten baptised at the first "special assembly day" but i got sick just a few days before.

so i got baptised at the d.c.that same year instead.

i regret it, but at the time i thought i was doing the right thing, i sincerely believed i was dedicating my life to serving god.

I was 16 and only did it because it was expected of me. It meant nothing to me except that I was pleasing my parents. Years later, when I realized I was supposed to have actually FELT something and have made a dedication to god, I felt like I should DO IT AGAIN - BE REBAPTIZED - since it wasn't really good enough the first time!

I regretted having to agonize over whether I SHOULD do it again........

I did NOT do it again, although I felt much pressure to do so, as others in my congregation did

Yoga

okay i got back from the doctor yesterday, and in the past 11 months, without doing anything in particular for diet and exercise, i've lost 12 pounds.

12 pounds!

i've been overweight my whole life and being able to "live" while losing is huge.. i joined curves and will be doing that 3-4 times per week.

As a 40+ year JW, and being a mom who left the organization during the last couple of years - with my husband and teens, my heart goes out to you. You are courageous and intelligent and I would only like to encourage you to perhaps slow down just a bit with the move out.

I know how much dissonance a young person can experience when being raised in this cult. I was raised in it --- and it wasn't until I realized what it was doing to my own offspring - that I faced the facts. What right did I, as a parent, have to force my kids to shut down their own thinking ability and accept with no questioning, the cult's teachings? I was asking myself, WHAT GOD would EXPECT me to do this to my kids??? No god that I wanted any part of. We are all unique individuals with our own BRAINS - and the, if you believe.... "god-given" right to USE them.

I hope your parents and grandma would get to the point of considering these thoughts - but the brainwashing goes deep and it takes a certain something in each one's own experience, to get the light to come on. It's a sick people that suggest killing oneself as better than leaving the organization and many have made the suggestion. PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER IT.

You are probably reading a lot of areas of the board. There was a recent thread that posted 1988 Awake articles that were a great help to me when I tried to explain to my kid's grandpa, why they were not attending meetings anymore. I also went over these articles with two elders. The articles REALLY can get a JW parent to start thinking......since the message is written by their own cult, and the info can be applied to ALL PEOPLE, not just to "WORLDLY" folks. It would be great if you could read these articles before you talk to your folks again.

I'm sure your school counselor will help you with some of your thoughts too - if there was any way you could stay at home, with the family coming to some acceptance of YOU ....... I love my son so much for being courageous, like you, and helping me to see how wonderful it is to be a mom - allowing your child to be who they really are. Perhaps your parents will one day know this joy too.

my daughter-in-law recently gave a very nice baby shower for her cousin.

the next day at the meeting she was called into the library and counselled for playing games.

i asked her what the basis was.

Well.....are you not aware? ..... Surely, you are encouraging COMPETITION with the games such as collecting clothespins from those you catch crossing their legs.

Anti-Witnessing to a mental health professional.

well for the past 3 days since coming home from texas, i have been doing my yearly in-service training at work, and in todays class they had a mental health worker come speak to the class about mental health issues.

as class was dismissed i just knew i had to talk to her about jw's and that is what i did.

i spoke for about 20 minutes to her and told her all about how the wt society tries to manipulate the children and instill fears, anxieties, and doubt into the children's minds.. she listened to me intently and agreed with most of the points i was making, she didnt have much knowledge of jw's beforehand, but she definitely could see how raising children in the jw religion could be detrimental to their emotional and psychiatric growth.

I got a few minutes in today too, talking to a lady who saw the Dr. Phil show yesterday on CULTS.

Now she knows the truth about "the TRUTH" = CULT.

Need help finding specific WT articles

i'm looking for that article about the guy who went to a door with a beard and the lady was really put off by it and turned down the literature because of it.i believe it's in the '73 or '74 wt but i can't find it now.. also,not too long ago i read a wt article from the early 60's that specifically mentioned 10 hours of service.i believe blondie had put it in one of her posts.. if anyone can help me with these it would be greatly appreciated,i'm having discussions with my wife and her father about some wts rules that seem more like commandments of men that lack scriptural backing.mt 15:8-9. thank you.
