gspradling,
You can also check the following thread: ...but Jesus said the truth would divide families!!!!.
my jw mom always uses this verse to justify her distance from me and my family.
i have never been able to come up with a reasonable response to her.
does anyone have any good suggestions?

JWs were circulating an e-mail with the following pic (yes, they mean it!):
im looking for information about how much the author of the third canonical gospel draws from pauls first epistle to the corinthians.
a comparison of the synoptics with 1 corinthians seems to show that luke is more closely linked to 1 corinthians than the others.. consider the following passages, for example:luke 10:7,8 stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you (exclusively lukan), for the worker deserves his wages (mysthos; matt uses rhabdos, food).
do not move around from house to house.
I’m looking for information about how much the author of the third canonical Gospel draws from Paul’s first epistle to the Corinthians. A comparison of the Synoptics with 1 Corinthians seems to show that Luke is more closely linked to 1 Corinthians than the others.
Consider the following passages, for example:
Luke 10:7,8 Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you (exclusively Lukan), for the worker deserves his wages (mysthos; Matt uses rhabdos, food). Do not move around from house to house. When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you.
Luke 17:10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.”
1 Corinthians 9:14,16-18 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel (cf. 1Tim 5:18). … Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward (mysthos); if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. What then is my reward (mysthos)? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make use of my rights in preaching it.
1 Corinthians 10:27 If some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.
Luke 11:49 For this reason also the wisdom of God said, “I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will persecute” (In Matthew’s parallel passage [23:34], Christ, not the "wisdom", is the one who says “I will send…”)
1 Corinthians 1:24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. (God’s sophia personified, as in Luke)
First Corinthians’ Last Supper account, in particular, is followed more closely by G-Luke than by G-Matthew and G-Mark. For instance, only Luke and Paul add the command: “Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22; 1 Corinthians 11)
What do you think? Is there any common material used by the authors of Luke and 1 Corinthians? I’m interested in the following issues:
1) Among the Gospels, which is more dependent upon 1 Corinthians’ gospel traditions? Is it Luke?
2) Among the Pauline epistles, which one has a more dense intertextuality with Luke/Acts? 1 Corinthians?
Does anyone have any info (or links) on that? Thanks!

just wondering if any of you have seen these billboards where you live?.
i think they are interesting.
at first, i thought that some kooky group was sponsoring them.
Now I got it... Page break's fault.
large numbers of jw congregations are going to be trouble long before they lose their last elder to death or resignation.. most congregations i know have at least one - and often several - elders who can barely function at all, due to illness, old age.
or just plain inability to accomplish anything.
the society seems loathe to remove these men, despite their 'elder in name only'.
Beards are not looked upon with such disdain in Europe. Basically, the farther north you go, the more accepted they are.
Ooops, I hadn't seen that dozy was from UK.

When I attended the elders school in November , the average age must have been 55 , including numerous very old brothers. There were some younger elders who did the bulk of the teaching parts. Notably , there were very few "young" (30 something) elders - and a couple of them had "goatee" beards , so I guess the appointment criteria has been relaxed!
What?? Are you being serious?
backing away from 1914?
i think not.. may 1, 2006 wt third study article on page 27, paragraph 2 and 3 state:.
"2. almost 30 years after that pentecost in 33 c.e., the apostle paul confirmed that christ had not yet taken full kingdom power, but he was "at the right hand of god, from then on awaiting until his enemies should be placed as a stool for his feet.
Leo,
Check an old post of mine on the topic at hand: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/76237/1230290/post.ashx#1230290
BTW: the downward trend for 607 is super-obvious. Although they still mention the date, they seem to feel embarassed doing so. They are definetely not emphasizing it as they used to.

how does a witness answer this?
if we are indeed living "deep into the time of the end", and if jehovah is going to speed things up, then why are the numbers of the organization getting lower with each passing year?
with the chart below showing their dwindling and embarassing figures, it's one of two things: either this organization does not have god's blessing, or the end must still be a long way off...........i've quoted a couple of captions from the literature......hmmm..... seems to me like they fit the description of babylon the great a little bit better than an organization that is being run by jesus christ.. *** .
Great sum up Mary!
I think the graph shows the yearly WT growth. Last year the figure was a complete shame, 1,7% increase, lower than population growth.

i just received this news from a bro who has connections in bethel.... .
bro albert d schroeder died at 10:30 am new york time today at brooklyn bethel...he was 94 yrs old.. he was born on april 7, 1911 in saginaw, michigan and entered bethel service in 1932. he was appointed a member of the governing body on december 18, 1974. bro schroeder's life story appeared in the march 1, '88 wt pages 10-17: entitled: "my life in jehovah's spirit-directed organization.".
i don't know if the "today" means it was actually today...as i can't be sure when my friend received this news... but anyway, another of the old guys bites the dust.. .
I once read a personal story here on JWD about someone who went to Bethel, probably as a temporary volunteer. He went to the dining hall and there Albert Schroeder was, at the table's head, before meal time. One thing he saw changed his whole perspective about Bethel: instead of being occupied with something more "spiritual", Schroeder was there reading The Wall Street Journal. At that moment, he got disillusioned about staying there and decided to quit and leave Bethel in the first opportunity he got. Schroeder "stumbled" him.
Does anyone have the link to that story? It's a keeper.
