Worship of planes?
by gringojj in.
i remember a post a while back that talked about some people on an island or something that worshipped planes or something because they used to drop off packages with parachutes during a war or something.
can anyone link me to that thread or refresh my memory as to who those people are?

I am not sure about the post you are referring to, but it reminds me a movie called The Gods Must be Crazy. Here is a synopsis from Amazon.com:
South African director Jamie Uys caught lightning in a bottle with The Gods Must Be Crazy--a Coke bottle, to be specific. This slaphappy collection of goofy pratfalls and culture-clash gags became an enormous international smash, and made a sort of star out of the Bushman selected to play the central role, the completely ingratiating N!Xau. He plays a man, unaware of white culture, who finds a Coca-Cola bottle in the Kalahari (dropped by a passing pilot) and promptly has his life turned around by this mystical object. The movie looks slipshod and even amateurish at times, yet its attitude is so bubbly it's hard to resist. Proving that physical comedy remains a true international language, millions of moviegoers around the world drank it up. --Robert Horton

It's funny how tastes change. When I was much younger red hair on a woman was a turn-off. Now it's just the opposite. Hubba, hubba Blondie.

FLUFF: Tell us your favorite weird movie, and...
by GentlyFeral inall right, now that we're talking about movies again, let's turn each other on to some of these:the best movie you thought you'd hatemine are: perfect blue my first exposure to intelligent anime.
come to think of it, this is definitely a "best weird movie," too.fight club i'd been avoiding it for years because of the violence.the truman show i mean, jim carrey's mugging plus cliched preachments.
well, that's what it could have been.basquiat a depressing ending to a story of mixed accomplishment and really bad judgement, complicated by mental illness but the scene where he hallucinates a work of art he has just designed, and smiles it explains so much.

Mine without a doubt is "Dark Star" My biggest regret is lending it to my brother and then him losing it. I haven't found a replacement yet.

A woman came to my house a couple of years ago and I invited her inside but she wouldn't come in, even though my sister was visiting at the time. So, I talked to her on my front porch. I questioned her on some things like disfellowshipping and changing bible texts. She admitted she had been disfellowshipped herself. She pooh-poohed bible changes, and said they just took out the "thee, and thous" in order to make it more readable. When I challenged that she got very defensive and walked away, saying she could bring her husband back and he would explain things for me since he knew more. I haven't had a return visit since. I've never been a JW.

It's really tough to narrow it down to one favorite. What I like has changed drastically over the years. I use to favor war films based on real events, like The Great Escape, or any other WWII battle, but that has changed now, even though I do still enjoy historical war movies. Now I prefer romantic comedies and life-affirming films such as: Little Women, Anne of Green Gables (except for the third film - horrible), Serendipity, Love Actually, Notting Hill. There are lots more in this vein. I also really enjoy classic movies from the 30s and 40s like: The Razor's Edge, Casablanca, Meet John Doe, and It's a Wonderful Life. There are just too many for me to mention.

Wow. After watching that I feel like taking a long shower. This shows the extremes people will go to in order to have some sense of identity that sets them apart from everyone else.

What Siddhashunyata said. You have boxed yourself in with your statements concerning the meaning and purpose of life. Find out what you really are and then see what happens.

Psychology is the deception of the devil
by poppers inwhile driving today i decided to listen to am radio for a change, and came across a religious station.
their guest (don't remember who) had just written a book denouncing psychology and psychotherapay, calling it the "devil's deception".
he derided christian clergy who have taken training in counseling, saying they are pawns of the devil if they don't rely soley on the bible in helping people.

Thank you looking_glass for your brief illucidation on some of the giants in the field psychology.
"What will these religions do if people find happiness within themselves and not in fundementalist religions."
Yes, indeed. So much of one's core identity is invested in religious/philosophical beliefs that any challenge to those beliefs threatens that identity - who will I be if I don't have my religion? Is "what I am" really separate from "god"? Religion is control and with control no one has to actually think for themselves and consider other possibilities.
Thank you as well, Carmel.

"Dumb doG for making us to have a psychological side, the nerve of Him/Her/It!"
Right you are.
He said Freud hated Christians because they were antisemitic, and that the foundation of his work rested on the rip-off of Greek mythology (Oedepus). Carl Rogers ended his life through assisted suicide (or was that Maslow?). Maslow left his wife and then communed with her spirit after her death. Carl Jung got much of his insight through channeling.
