Hey AlanF,
I loved your answer to ithinksee's question - there is profound wisdom in your words. Seeking 'answers' to life's questions (which may or may not include one's relationship with 'god') is the very thing preventing one from discovering what is actually true, for what is true can only be here now. Seeking implies that you don't already have truth and must, therefore, get it from some place, person, authority, religion, philosophy or whatever the mind can conjure up that is 'out there' somewhere.
All the while the mind is doing this truth is being overlooked - it is here now, closer than one's very breath, but it cannot be grasped by the mind, though mind insists on doing so, and so the seeking continues. It is the nature of the mind to want 'answers' but mind cannot grasp that the only 'answer' which brings unconditional happiness and peace is nonconceptual. It seldom occurs to the mind to look for 'truth' within oneself, to look for that which is always here, for that which never changes. That 'something' that is being sought is what is aware at all times, though overlooked - it is the 'core' of oneself, one's very 'beingness.' -

WHAT'S THE WORST JOB YOU EVER HAD?
by Mary inthe worst one i ever had was working in a frozen chicken factory.
there were about 30 of us in a freezing cold room and my shit job was to feel the half-frozen chicken breasts up, to see if there were any little bones in them.
well after the first 5 minutes my frigging fingers were frozen stiff, so i couldn't tell if there were any bones in there or not........after 20 minutes it felt like my hands were having an out of body experience and if they weren't in front of my frozen face, i would've thought they had dropped off.

When I was 15 I worked at catching chickens in order for them to be shipped to a processing plant - 12 chickens per crate. This was in a series of barns in which each barn held 12,000 birds. I got pretty good at it actually - I could catch 6 chickens in 6 seconds.
A couple of years before this I worked on a turkey farm. I had to catch them also, and hold them while they were innoculated in the neck with a large syringe containing penicillin. -

You know you're NOT a JW anymore when...(add some)
by Flindersgirl inyou don't automatically wake up with a headache on sunday morning.... you no longer go around (while in field service) mentally deciding what home you'll "have" after armaggedon.... every item of clothing you buy as a woman is not first assessed for its modesty value.... you no longer worry about the 144,000 watching you have sex...:).
when on holiday you don't have to find the nearest kingdom hall asap (remember brother and sisters you are not on holiday from jehovah!!!).
being able to laugh about having a numb ass at the assemblies from sitting and the hilarity in having to tell people that you found the meeting "uplifting" when really you were fighting sleep the whole time.... you no longer have to avoid entire sections of music stores in order to make sure you don't pick up and "demonistic" vibes from backmasked cd's.

Since I was never a jw I can't respond directly to the thread. But I do want to welcome you to jwd, flindersgirl.

Do We Really Have Free Will?
by frankiespeakin ini personally don't think so.
the reason why i say this is because we don't know where our conscious thoughts come from.
what i mean is,,that before a thought comes into our consciousness where was it and why did it come into the conscious?

frankie,
You are so close to finding what could be labelled as an answer. Look for the one who would even pose the question; in other words, ask 'Who am I?' See if you can locate a definitive answer. You may come up with various ideas of who/what you really are, but as long as any idea arises which seems to answer the question you will know that you must keep looking. The answer is not in the mind; so long as the answer is sought there, the question will remain.
With the cessation of all ideas arising (about anything) notice what remains. When you are left with nothing for the mind to wrap itself around 'something' remains, then you will discover whether or not there is free will.
It is evident that you are on the verge of waking up, the alarm clock is ringing - too many people at this point turn the alarm off, roll over, and fall back to sleep. Look for the 'me' - follow it through and be astonished at what is found. -

Wow. I've never seen anyone grab hold of an anchor before (after professing to 'research' such an important matter) and jump into the ocean. I saw something like this in 'Master and Commander' and you know what happened there - but then, that was just a movie. So this is what it looks like in real life. Those who remain here lock our eyes with yours as you fade from view, and hope that at some point you will see the wisdom of letting go.

I was called by a JW wanting a favor...
by Dawn inyep - you read that right.. i had a message on my answering machine - a jw i used to know long ago, left a message, wanting me to help out with some legal matters (i have worked for the criminal justice system for about 15 yrs now).. my husband just about had a cow - here's someone who wouldn't talk to me at the grocery store, but has no problem talking to me if they need something?
i thought to myself, could this person really be that nieve about human social situations - ie: if you're going to be mean to someone, don't expect a favor from them .
ok ok, i know - i should show more christian attitude, turn the other cheek, and call this person back.

Another option: call them back and tell them that you know how much more important it is that they keep themselves spriritually pure, and that out of respect for their beliefs you can't in good conscience sully those beliefs by interacting with them. That way you get to say no with a clear conscience and make them see how ridiculous their stance is in dealing with worldly people.

Are there any 'true' churches ?
by Qcmbr injust a question because of course we all either believed we were in the 'truth', are still in the 'truth' have left and found the 'truth', there is no 'truth' or that the only truth is found in the trailer park with a bottle of bud and a bunch of 'pozzies:)

Hi myelaine.
It would seem that you have adopted quite a rigid belief system. What is it that lays claim to that belief system?
