I've heard that "behooves" gets used a lot. Any truth to that? What a pompous word.

What do you believe in now?
by janelle ini just stumbled on this site today, and am i ever glad i did!!!
i was raised as a witness, my mom being a witness and my dad a non believer.

Hello janelle, and welcome to JWD.
I've never been a JW, but I'm sure you'll find a wide diversity of viewpoints on your question from ex JWs here at JWD. As for myself, I dropped out of my religion a number of years ago (Roman Catholic) and have not adopted another belief system. In fact, I have dropped all belief systems and philosophies. This enables me to look at others, things, and most importantly myself, without the contaminating influence of the mind. It's a lovely way to live, full of peace and contentment, fully attentive to the here and now - ther only moment there is. -

Thinking of coming out of the apostate closet
by Brigid inmy dear fellow sojourners,.
i am in deep repose today.
as free as i feel from the organization, there is still one tiny veil yet to be lifted.

"I am in deep repose today. As free as I feel from the Organization, there is still one tiny veil yet to be lifted. That one in front of my face--my very identity. I have been doing much inner journeying (one reason why I'm here)."
Should you "come out", as you say, will that lift the veil on your identity in the truest sense? Dropping the facade that you are shouldering now is certainly a way to gain some freedom, but will you then take up another identity? Go deeper into repose and leave everything behind that you could identify with as "you" - there you will find real freedom that isn't dependent upon anything. When you find that freedom, all of this other stuff that you are struggling with will be seen as "dream stuff" that existed only within your mind. Without realizing it, the life you are living is a waking dream, and the "you" that you take yourself to be is only an illusion. Continue your inner journey and discover the truth of this. -

Hello board.
by MrBee inhello to all on this board.
i am a none jw and never have been, although most of my family are.
the lifestyle i lead has caused me to become a "black sheep" and i am limited to a couple of phone-calls a year, which suits me just fine.

"I had an illegitimate child while a JW, and was told that I could be excited, but not proud."
Wow, how sad is that.
"I, of course, bragged on her at every opportunity."
Good for you, serendipity. -

you don't believe in god... ever find yourself praying?
by Calliope ini'm not sure whether there is a god or not.
so far as i can tell, there isn't much evidence to support his existence... .
but sometimes i find myself in what appears to be a prayer.

I don't believe in the god that I was brought up with. But even when I still believed I found myself struggling with prayer. Somehow the very act of prayer didn't feel right, like the activity of prayer made me feel even more distant and separate from "god". When directed to pray during church services I always felt like I had nothing to pray for - it was very strange to me at the time.
Those days are behind me, for I no longer feel separate from my "essence", which I sense is what "god" really is. When there is a conscious awareness of one's very essence there is nothing felt to be lacking, there is nothing which is seen as "right or wrong"; there is only a deep peace, silence, contentment, and fulfillment - what more could one want? -

So does that make "homodoxy" a word too? And what would THAT mean, agreeing with established religions?

by purplesofa inseasonal affectiveness disorder.
february is an especially hard month for me every year.
it is a little worse than winter blues.. for me the lack of energy seems to be the most dominating symptom.

About 20 years ago I noticed that on my brother's birthday, February 23, there was light until 6 pm. After that my mood about winter changed. That date has become my unofficial first day of spring - and here it is, only 3 more days until the 23rd!

A part of me
by *Heather* inmy mother married a man that was a complete and utterly a-hole.
he made life miserable, and i would say he made my life like living in hell (for 9 1/2 years).
i don't know what his problem was, but i guess it was this darn religion and more.

Am I only encouraging JWs?
by kristyann inwhen i go to this one store, i usually stop into the laundromat next door to it about once a week and pull out all of the awakes and watchtowers.
there used to usually be about 3 or 4 per week.
now, it seems that they are putting more and more in there.
