I always thought it was strange that they had a secret pioneer book too. I could never understand why they wouldn't want all public ministers to be as encouraged and qualified as the next. If there was some magic book that helped people become more effective public ministers, why only give it to a select few? The hierarchies in the Borg are so obvious.
P.E., I'm sorry your mom is so deep into the dissonance. I'd like to say it was a rarity, but it's not. And JWs like to say that it is Satan that blinds the minds of people. Talk about the blind leading the blind.

I was on JW Talk maybe 2-3 years ago and that poem was posted. I spoke out about how ridiculous it was and don't remember getting much support. One member there was married to an unbeliever and sent me a pm thanking me. Even when I was still in I couldn't stand such bull poo. It's a very hostile poem. I hate their attitudes.

Thinking of you, your mentally disabled brother, and your daughter, completely breaks my heart. There is a very slim chance at some point that they will see you again, but you and I know the harsh reality for most. I'm so sorry. My family shuns me, and my wife's shuns her too, after we DA'd last year. They know it was all our choice but they have to shun. Our families are punitive enough that they probably don't want anything to do with us on that reason alone. Rules are more important than anything.

I think Sister C also got the benefit of being an elder's daughter in the hierarchy for many years. It puts some people (particularly attractive, popular people) on a pedestal that's hard to knock them off of. For a tragedy to strike one of the beautiful people makes it even more tragic, and then the scenario you outlined takes place.

Why are anniversaries allowed but not birthdays?

the scripture quotes aside, i was always told that we don't celebrate birthdays because that is a celebration of the self, which has no place in jehovah's organization.

then why celebrate anniversaries?

anniversary celebrations are about the joining of two selves, isn't that twice as selfish?.

So Today Was My Wife's First Ever Birthday Party

she turned one today, and 36 earlier this week.

we planned a big party, big for two people that have never thrown a party before.

we rented a church fellowship hall because 1. it was nice and big and affordable and 2. it was kind of awesome to throw a party in a place we would have never ventured in our previous life.

You're a good friend HB! I'll bet he never forgets that party. Heck, I'd like to go to that party myself as it sounded fun. My wife and I threw her party and we've never even been to a birthday party before, so we had no clue what traditions were or what was normal. We did some digging online but ultimately we did it our way. You hit the nail on the head about children not getting their own special day and their self-esteem. Heaven forbid you ever feel good or special as a kid without it being praise for giving a good presentation or talk at the freaking Kingdom Hall. Outside of that you knew you were pretty much worthless. Heck, even God's hope for you was nothing more than "undeserved kindness" for the sinful little kiddos. Ugh, makes me sick. So glad to be out, and happy that you were never a part of it but helped your friend like that.

Thanks! I love giving gifts and it would be one of my "love languages". Maybe because we grew up poor and gifts were hard to come by with no holidays, but a good gift shows that a person is trying hard to think and feel you. I have a lot of fun with it. My wife and I didn't celebrate holidays for 16 years but she got plenty of surprise gifts. I've made grown men cry with the gifts I've gotten them. It's just a natural skill and I get something out of it too when my gift has an impact.
