"does the child who doesn't salute get called names?"
No, but my son might get a smack upside the head if he doesn't do it correctly. If he's in his Cub Scout uniform, he is to salute in one manner. If he is not in uniform, he is to salute in another. After four years of being a Scout, I should hope he gets it right. Ditto for standing at attention during the Star Spangled Banner.

The Star Spangled Banner

what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?.

"My ancestors weren't even on the continent at the time."
Mine were, for roughly 145 years by the time papers were being signed in Philadelphia and for 180 years by the time Francis Scott Key penned his poem. (True, there's one shoot of the family tree that was here for a a few thousand years before that, but most emmigrated from Europe.) -

First annual Apostate Independence Day?? Any takers? Lurkers L00k please.
by IP_SEC inlet me start by saying that i have the deepest respect for all of you who have left the organization.
some of us choose to leave in spirit only but remain physically for any number of reasons.
i have respect for you because youve been able to push through what i know is a terribly dense cloud to get to the point where you see the org for what it really is.. others choose to fade, which in many ways is harder than leaving out right.

Are You Too Tough on Yourself?
by Blueblades innow that you have made that exit from the cult, wtbts., or are fading, are you too tough on yourself?
do you have a little voice inside your head that's constantly telling you that you don't measure up?
nearly all of us carry these voices around, some are louder than others, some are quieter.

Jehovah's Witness hope, does it remove the sting of death?
by free2beme inrecently i was speaking to my witness sister, and the topic of someone dying in her husband's family came up.
she mentioned that her husband (a non-witness) has a hard time with death and will not even go back to his grandparents property, 20 years after their death, as he does not do well with the memories and death itself.
my sister made the statement, "i explained to him that i hoped one day i could help him come to terms with death, by learning what it really is and the hope in store.

Yeah, I think it does remove the sting of death. Perhaps no more than other faiths who believe that they will all be reunited in heaven, though. Either way, the pain of losing a loved one is replaced by the hope that you will eventually be reunited. The pain will diminish when you are together again in a better place.
I was discussing this with someone on another board recently. And my bottom line is this: I don't know what lies beyond this life. Maybe there's an earthly reward. Maybe heaven awaits us. I don't strongly believe in either of them, however. Therefore, I try to make the most of our time together in this life.
Bob Marley said it best: "If you know what life is worth, you will look for yours on earth." -

Why is chalk white?
by Qcmbr ini was reading some pro flood info and i came across an intriguing point regarding chalk - the fact that it is composed almost entirely of shells.
now i have no desire to start a pro flood blah blah debate.
this is a sincere non religious question for our marine biologists / geologists - why is chalk white and not layered with silt and sand?

Human Sexuality 101: Everything a young girl needs to hear?
by Check_Your_Premises in"body you" is very smart about a few, simple things.
this is how you want it because "body you" is kind of a moron.. fact 2: all living things have two primary desires: to stay alive, and to have offspring.. this is a basic, defining biological fact.
of course "brain you" doesnt think, "i want to talk to that cute boy because i want to procreate", but "body you" is!
