Yes Heathen their stinginess is as proverbial as is that of the Jews. At the congs I remember they used to say if someone needed financial assistance: let them go and work or go to the state's social services, Jehovah's organisation is not a charity.
If those higher up were charitable I am sure the R&F would imitate them. The general impression is that they make a lot of money, so what do they do with it? They have a six million strong slave labour force and all the the congs pay for their expenses, so....

WTS Bills US JWs $8.4 million for Traveling Overseers
by ezekiel3 inbeing announced at service meetings this week at all us congregations:.
a letter read during the announcements states that due to increased costs of health insurance and vehicles provided for traveling overseers (circuit and district overseers) the watchtower bible and tract society has determined the need to ask for a specific "contribution" for the "traveling overseer assistance arrangement".. .
until this date expenses of this sort were paid from the worldwide work or general fund of contributions.. .

Did losing your religion send you into/exacerbate depression?
by SixofNine ini think most of us here agree that our past belief in the jw organization as being god's sole chosen people was delusional on our part.
for myself, when i lost that delusion (fairly abruptly too), i came out of a long period of depression immediately.
while i was incredibly angry at having been decieved, i can't say that that anger translated into any other negatives, in fact, overall, i think my general level of anger, even at elders/the gb/etc subsided, as i now understood why they do what they do even better than they themselves understand it.

For me leaving wasn't an upsetting thing as I had been fading, and thinking out their doctrines for years and I had a good idea as to why it was correct and desirable to leave. Then having a job and a girl was good.
It took longer to totally neutralise all their effects as unfortunately in the mid 80's there was no internet and I had lingering doubts on some points. -

Does anyone seriously believe (or know for certain) that they a multi billion dollar business don't have enough money to pay for such -it should be to them- small expenses?
And someone said they give no charity to non JWs but do they give anything to JWs? -

Does God speak directly to GB today?
by Bambie init's been 15 years since i was df'd, but i seem to recall as a jw that the belief was that the only human after adam that jehovah spoke directly to was jesus.. my question has to do with what the org.
teaches regarding modern day communication with jehovah.
it was my understand when i was a jw, that the gb does not say that jehovah speaks directly to them.

Bambie I don't think your last post is meant to end this thread.
So I add that it became obvious from what was posted here that the GB are up to their well known trick of having two different definitions for a word and wondering all the time between them as it suits them. Their yes is not yes and their no is not no: Are you God inspired?Yes Are you God inspired? No
As Luna 2 says they are being cunning so as to have the best of both sides. AS far as I am concerned being God inspired or directed are really one and the same thing and as Old Soul confirms they themselves do use them interchangeably.
If I am Spirit inspired, God directly makes me aware of a certain concept. If I am spirit directed then he inspires me to read a certain 5 or 10 verses that taken together lead to that same concept. I think that's how they put it.
The old foxes are up to the usual silly mind games. -

Did they themselves ever fully define and clarify what is spirit direction and how it differs from spirit inspiration?
As Mary says if they are not inspired but just directed what's their special status? -

Having read the posts on this thread I am not sure whether the GB claim to be insired or not, apparently at times they claim one then the other "I am and I am not inspired"
I think once more they are trying to split hair and redefine the basic meanings of words. What does inspired mean? God sends info straight to their heads. Is it different from receiving direction? In what different ways do (1)Spirit insiration and (2)Spirit direction lead them to know and decide things?
But then having to vote for decisions means that there is no Divine involvement in that decision making.
Also I didn't know that the GB existed in the 50's I thought they came up in the 70's with much opposing resistance from Franz and Knorr. -

DID ANYONE ON THE DOORS SAY IT WAS a lot of rubbish?
by badboy in.
i understand from someone that they were visited by jws a few years ago.. the lady said that in a paradise earth, they would be lions walking all over her garden(something like that).
she replied `what a lot of rubbish' or something like that.. were there similiar experiences when you were on the doors?

That's magical feminine cunning from the pioneer sister, what can women think of! My experience was with a guy who said that all this was in the human imagination and he didn't want to see his cheerful mood getting ruined through talking about such non sense.

Loubelle in case you didn't know, apart from books there's a wealth of information about the WTS on the internet across numerous websites, in addition to free minds.

Who do you miss the most?
by Crumpet inparticularly for those who are shunned for reasons of dfing and daing completely, who do you miss the most that no longer has anything to do with you?
and why?
-

I never missed anyone since they were a difficult impenetrable society almost impossible to socially relate with. Had no friendships there. I only liked an elderly annointed member who died a few years ago. As for my sister and her family they never shunned me.

Third World WTS
by gringojj inthe wts is growing rapidly in poor countries this we know.
but my question is how are things conducted in these areas?
the wts could be baptising people left and right just to show the number of jws worldwide is increasing.

Gringojj, the subject is very interesting but I think the problem is that most people here are from -developped- English speaking countries that have little or no experience or at least knowledge about the third world. Perhaps a few do.
As for the numbers they could well be cooked so as not to demoralise the JWs with a drastically falling total of members. They are after all a very dodgy and deceitful lot and this is an easy trick to play. They almost certainly cooked the numbers of the annointed, 8000 in the year 2005 when they should all be dead by now save perhaps a few hundreds.
