I am sad to hear that he passed away. Many years ago, though it feels like yesterday, when I was spending a lot of time here Minimus was one of the most regular posters and I suppose he kept it up until now.
Does anyone know how old he was when he died?

Excellent article Blondie as always. The depth of your knowledge regarding the JWs is profound and astonishing. And I love the way you unravel their subtle webs of deception.
This Governing Body mythology was started in the 1970s when its members were demanding real executive power at the expense of the President and Vice President Knorr and Franz. For once Franz, himself a great manipulator, argues for the truth that there was no governing body in apostolic times of course because it suited him.
Anyone with a basic knowledge of the early church know that there was no governing body in the manner of the JW one.
James (and not Peter) was the leader of the very early church chosen for his moral qualities and because he was a brother of Jesus.
The JWs do not explain what happened to this supposed governing body after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans and the scattering of the church or after the death of the apostles.
They also do not explain how this dogma fits in with the division within the church with James and all the apostles and all the Jewish Christians following the Mosaic Law to the letter and the gentile Christians under Paul believing that the mosaic law had become obsolete and those under it were under slavery and curse. Paul was really scathing against those who tried to bring gentile Christians under the law. He had clearly directly confronted Jewish Christianity and the supposed governing body in Jerusalem.

Today's W.T on GB not being inspired is having ZERO impact on most J.W's
by Isambard Crater inthe congregation i attend had it's watchtower study on thursday night because of l.d.c work this week-end, and another congregation i have some not very spiritual friends in had their watchtower study on wednesday.
from what i have delicately prised out of people, the congregations loved the watchtower study this week, saying it was so encouraging and all the usual stuff, with no-one seeming to realise the g.b.
said they're not inspired, so the spirit int he past has moved them to teach wrong things, and all the other ideas excellently summed up on reddit.. today's watchtower will wash over the heads of most j.w's like it never even happened, the all remaining as loyal as ever, and it makes me so, so sad..

Ttddt, they are very dictatorial surely the R&F members should have a say in decisions that affect their lives often profoundly. And all the more so since they themselves admitted over time to making numerous errors. Who can trust them in that case? Of course if someone demands as much they will be very speedily expelled and shunned.

The governing body as spiritual leaders are fake just as the presidents were. They assumed power in the 1970's over the objections of Franz who didn't want to share his total powers with anyone. The fairy tale of the humble faithful and discrete slave was used to validate them in the eyes of the rank and file as it did for the presidents previously: Russell, Rutherford, Knorr and Franz though the latter was the real power behind the throne even during Knorr's era.
I strongly recommend the book "The four presidents of the Watchtower society" by Edmond Gruss for a behind the scenes unbiased look at the presidents which shows that they were nothing more than selfish power mongers out on a power trip. Nothing like the exemplary, god beloved, top grade spiritualised beings they claim to be. Far from it they come across as the very image of the evil slave.

What do You Think About Hybrid and Electric Cars?
by Village Idiot inbattery technology has been making leaps and bounds in affordability and energy output throughout the past decade.
while pure electric cars currently have limited range, the near future holds prospects for longer ranges.
hybrids, and recently plug in hybrids, have a mileage of up to 50 mpg* giving them a range of 500 miles from a ten gallon gas tank.

A Tesla S with a 100 kWh battery can do 335 miles or 540 Km.

What was it like being a JW in the 1960's and 1970's
by UnshackleTheChains inthis is obviously a question for the older generation.
i'm really curious what it was like to be a witness in the 60's and 70's?.
was the society as strict as it is today?.

I suppose the atmosphere varied from congregation to congregation and region to region.
My recollection from the seventies regarding the two congregations I attended they lacked a spirit of care and warmth and had zero brotherly solidarity but there were some exceptions. Another one nearby was clearly very materialistic, their discussions were always about material goods, cars, fashion etc
A disappointed sister once told me the JWs in the past had a lot of love for each other that eventually disappeared.
I think their problem goes back to Rutherford who changed Russell's policies and put the emphasis on preaching and increasing numbers rather than on character development in other words on quantity rather than on quality and the JWs are paying the cost of this policy until now. The JWs as I remember them were like one dimensional spiritual caricatures focusing on the ever imminent end in a context of fear and otherwise had no real spiritual depth or substance as if love was not the central theme of Christianity. Their talks were always focused on preaching in the manner of Rutherford. There was no real effort to develop christian personality.

Faithful and Discreet slave class. Challenge the definition
by stuckinarut2 inok, so we all know that the basis the org uses for its power, authority, and supposed ability to speak on behalf of god is matt 24:45.
"who really is the faithful and discreet slave whom his master appointed over his domestics to give them their food at the proper time?".
but how can it possibly define the wt org?.

When seen with respect to the Governing Body it's chicanery! It is a way for them to assert their authority over their igorant believers and climb on their backs to control them. Unless very naive anyone can see through this ruse. Above all check their works to see if they match their claims of being faithful and obidient and they do not, they are neither faithful nor obedient!!! In fact their actions remind us strongly of the evil slave, they monopolise authority in what they claim is God's organisation and will quickly expell anyone that challenges their monopolistic policies.

144000 Literal or Figurative?
by why144000 inthe speaker at the memorial tonight stated straight up that the 144,000 is a literal number as we will stop celebrating the memorial when jesus 'arrives' and takes the few remnant with him.
how can the society change the 144,000 to figurative without blowing themselves out of the water?.

Hi objectivetruth, regarding the connection of the "144 000 undefiled by women" and babylon the great I haven't any good explanations but it certain that the women there are symbolic given that the whole context is symbolic. The JWs who claim that babylon as the great whore is false religion but who knows if this is true though it is certain that the WTS is a very false and exploitative religion with their whore like traits being obvious in many instances eg barefaced lying, greed for power. They sold precious spiritual things for a pittance for the sake of selfish gain.
Undefiled by wayward women may mean undefiled by the lower instinctual elements of life.
