as a jw..did you ever have a REAL theological discussion with anyone?

this came up in a conversation with a non witness friend lately.

he said its like i thought i was having theological discussions all the time but from what he could tell...i would go to the door with prearranged comments, which would illicit one of a few comments and my response would be as programmed as the initial comments.

i'm no brainy person.. and freely admit i'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

When I was a JW, conducted lots of Bible studies, and as a Ministerial Servant with the duties of an Elder, a lot of people came to me for help. Even then, I knew that the WTS was structured too much like a cult and I didn't agree with their urging everybody to study study study NOT THE BIBLE, BUT THEIR LITERATURE. So in my studies with people, and even in field service, I most always took ONLY my Bible with me. When I talked to somebody, it was with the genuine purpose to help them see what the Bible says about things, and that it's the only book with answers to all of life's questions.

I've always been well versed in scripture as I have been studying intensely since I was a teenager and I covertly got my degree in New Testament Greek while in good standing in the congregation. You would be surprised at how much more effective I was one-on-one and in field service when I made the Bible and IT'S message of salvation the focal point of my conversations. I always thought to myself, "If this is how Witnesses went door to door, we would be sooo much more productive."

I miss those deep theological conversations, though.

Why some won't leave the Watchtower

name as many reasons as you can why some won't leave the watchtower organization, even though they know something is wrong.

1. Trapped in it because of family, friends, business. Would be too costly in terms of relationships and/or money to leave.

2. Unable to deal with the realities of modern living, some hang on the "promise" of a better world, despite their other doubts.

3. Too puffed up with the artifical status conferred on JWs. With it, they are members of an elite who will survive the coming holocaust and live forever. Without it, they would just be poor, undereducated, working drudges trying to get by.

Spreading apostate material at the convention the high tech way!

well, for those going i thought i would include an item that can be used to spread apostate ideas to those who are hard of hearing.. http://www.hobbytron.com/mini-fm-tv-transmitter.html.

find out what frequency the convention is using to broadcast and simply tune this circuit to that frequency.

make a small "apostate" tape that possibly loops and plug the headphone jack of your walkman or mp3 player into the jack of this circuit and watch the fun.

Better than Apostate messages, why not get some old man with a chilling, powerful voice to announce that he is JEEEEEEEEE-HOVAH and to hit the deck as Armageddon is arriving in 10...9...8...6...7... etc and watch the panic confessions!!!

You would have to sitting very close to the reciever for that to work. And since there aren't really any "hard-of-hearing" sections anymore, the ones using walkmans to hear the program would all be spread out. But you're right, it would be hilarious to do that. I was thinking it could be a tape of some death metal.

but wouldn't it be terrible if we missed out meeting someone else from the board while we attended the same convention?

listing what convention your going to might be to much of a give away for some people, but i really don't care.

Let's say you're still attending meetings on a regular basis and trying to keep up appearances so that you can do things on your own schedule.

ROFL who would be doing that? Plus I would welcome somebody to "report" me. There is nothing further that the wonderful organization can do to me. I'm like Undaunted Danny...nothing to lose.

I want to point out that it would be extremely easy for someone to bust you as an apostate if you meet with them based on information given on this board. Post this info if you want, but be aware of the risks.

Why you say that UB? Plus, nobody is "busted" at conventions. This site should be a save haven. If there weren't so much IP recording and tracking then maybe some anonymity could be maintained that would help protect us.

Who's to say Jesus has "approved" the FDS and "appointed them..."

i think the entire system of witness beliefs hinge on this issue: is the governing body the mouthpiece that jehovah is using to lead faithful ones on earth?.

it seems jw's just assume that jesus did inspect them and did appoint them over his belongings.

I don't quite understand Grissom's line of thinking on this, but let me clarify the issue I'm brining up:

1914 is explained to death...prophecy from Daniel, "appointed times of the nations", 2520 years counted from 607 and so forth. They haven't fallen short in giving us "evidence" as to 1914.

But with the matter of the scriptural FDS, it's being inspected, approved, and appointed by Jesus, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO "EVIDENCE" GIVEN! They just say that it happened. Wait, says who? I could go to my co-workers and say, "Hey just so you know, the boss said I'm in charge now and that you'll have to do what I say and anybody that tries to go to him instead of me will get fired." But that wouldn't be an actually appointment, it would be usurping.

In a religion where so-called "evidence" stacks on top of more "evidence", why is there just an assumption that the governing body in Brooklyn was approved by Jesus? Now I'm not saying that they are probably the "evil slave" because the one characteristic that Jesus provides for us at Matthew 24 is that the evil slave would claim that Jehovah's day would be "delaying".

I'm going July 7-9 at the Mobile, Alabama Civic Center.
