Thanks Earnest for finding that quote. Do you know why the Watch Tower calls her Sister William P. Heath instead of Bonnie Boyd Heath? Are they trying to hide her true identity? And if so what are the reasons for this masquerade?

Hi Leolaia,
A relative of mine has an extensive Watch Tower library with the indexes. If I get a chance I will do some research and see if there are any references to Bonnie Boyd in the Watch Tower publications. I know that she is quoted in the 1975 Yearbook regarding an assembly in the 1920s. In the Yearbook the Watch Tower refers to her as sister William Heath.
Yesterday I talked with an ex-Bethelite who knew some of the oldtimers who knew Bonnie Boyd Heath. They said that Bonnie was noted for wearing large hats.

Interesting post, Earnest. Especially your comments about Bonnie Boyd. Have you ever wondered how she gained so much influence in Watch Tower affairs that she could "pull strings" to get cushy jobs for friends and family?
Your explanation for the names of the children residing at Beth Sarim has merit. But have you considered another possiblity? Sometimes the way to defuse a scandal is to make it look so obvious. After all most people would conclude that he wouldn't be that stupid to name his love children after himself and his mistress and then have them all living in the same house. It is too obvious, so it can't be true.

Hi everyone,
You have raised some interesting questions regarding "Princess Bonnie" and "Prince Joseph."
I haven't found anything to indicate that Rutherford ever called his son Malcolm "Prince." By the way Rutherford and Malcolm were still on good terms in 1915. During the Rutherford-Troy debate in Los Angeles that year Malcolm was present and assisted his father debate the Baptist clergyman. It was after JFR became Watch Tower president that there existed an estrangement between father and son.
Regarding Fark's post, it is very curious that a Watch Tower publication, the Messenger, would refer to little Bonnie and Joseph as "Princess and Prince." Is this a Freudian Slip? Did the Watch Tower King have a little prince and princess? Who was the Watch Tower queen? According to the information in previous posts, Bonnie Boyd excercised more influence in Watch Tower affairs during the Rutherford era than would be expected of a lowly stenographer. What was her true position in the corporation? These are questions begging for answers.
Thoughout history there have been many wealthy and powerful men who have kept mistresses who were much younger than themselves. It is also interesting that these kept women often called their benefactors "dad, daddy, poppa, pappy," possibly because they looked at them as father figures.
Nevertheless, this thread has raised many thought provoking questions while at the same time important clues have been revealed. Maybe someone here will investigage further, gather the hard evidence, and break the story of the century.

Hi Outoftheborg,
Thank you so much for sharing the information from your childhood. Every little bit helps. Perhaps someone here will see a clue and pick up on it.
Leolaia, it is possible that the Balkos may have lived in Cooper County, Missouri at one time. Balko doesn't seem to be a common name. In fact I looked it up in my local phone book and there were no Balkos listed in my county which has a population of almost 700,000. Rutherford lived in Cooper County from 1891 to 1908. If there are any Balkos listed in the 1890-1910 census there might be a connection. I liked your suggestion about checking Watch Tower sources. Perhaps someone who has an extensive library could check the Watch Tower Publications index for references to the Balkos.

Hi Leolaia,
You have done an excellent job with the census. Keep up the good work.
Earnest, your comments are well taken. However, Heath could have been mistaken, or not being totally honest.

Hi Leolaia,
Thank you for posting the updated information on the 1930 census. Hopefully someone will have the time to look into the property tax records for Monrovia for the years 1930-1940 as this will help clarify where Mary Rutherford resided during that period.

Hi Earnest,
Your quotations from the Moyle trial are very interesting. Ten years ago I read the transcripts myself, all 1992 pages.
The questioning of William Heath by Olin Moyle's attorney Walter Bruchausen is found on page 1301.
Bruchausen: Now, did Mr. Rutherford's wife live out in the California residence?
Heath: Yes.
Bruchausen: And did live there all the years you went out there?
Heath: Yes.
Bruchausen: She never came on to reside in Bethel?
Heath: No.
It is unfortunate that Mr Bruchausen didn't phrase his question: "Now did Mr. Rutherford's wife live out in California at Beth Sarim?" Since Bruchausen used the term California residence, Heath may have used "Theocratic War Strategy" so he could say yes because Mrs. Rutherford lived at a California residence, most likely in Monrovia. The 1930 census gives her address as 160 N Primrose Ave., Monrovia. The December 18, 1962 death notice gives her address as 159 Stedman Place, Monrovia. The December 19, 1962 obituary notice said that she was a Monrovia resident for 22 years. This may have been an error, or a reference to her residence at 159 Stedman Place. The February 15, 1963 obituary said that Mary had "made her home in Monrovia, Calif., for the past 40 years."
I seriously doubt that Mary Rutherford lived at Beth Sarim during the 1930s. But one could check the census records for 1940 to see if Mary was still living at 160 N Primrose, 159 Stedman Place, or some other residence. However, since she owned her home she would have paid property taxes each year. A simple check of the tax records would indicate at which residence she was living and also if she was paying taxes on rental property that she owned.
By the way there is a wealth of information in the Moyle transcripts some of which can be quite humorous. I remember one JW witness who when asked the date of his marriage, couldn't answer. He thought, but just couldn't come up with an answer. It was rather comical since the man had been married only a few years and was in his 30s. Unfortuately I don't have the time to re-read the transcripts to find the confrontation. But if some of you have the time, please look it up.
