I think pedophiles just like to get into postitions where they have acess to children. In our locality we have seen public school teachers, boy scout troop leaders, tennis coach, etc. prosecuted for child molestation. These people like to get a job where they have authority over children. For them it doesn't matter whether it is religious or secular, it's the power they wield over children.

Do Most Pedophiles Use Religion as Their Cover?
by cameo-d inas children, we were always taught not to accept candy from strangers and not to ride with strangers.
however, it seems that the danger most always comes, not from a stranger, but from someone the child knows.. one day we headed to the school bus stop knowing we were 'almost' late.
we waited and waited.

Dedication of Kingdumb Hall?
by NikL inso my wife who is an active sister got an "invite" to the dedication of the new hall in our town.. apparently it's a big deal 'cuz some big whig from krooklyn is coming to deliver a talk, yada yada yada.. my question, why spend the bucks to fly some old geezer out to the west coast for a building dedication?
is it not officially a kingdumb hall without his coming and having a big ceremony?.
just curious about your thoughts..

Don't gay Governing Body members travel with their domestic partners? Aren't they disguised as traveling companions or assistants so the rank and file won't catch on?

Regarding the GB members giving talks at the KH dedications, it seems that in the past the local congregation had to pay for the GB member's travel expense. And, if he brought his wife or domestic partner along, the congregation paid for them too.

Discussions with JW's and JW sympathizers in forums
by safari ini'm new to this site, though familiar with it for years, and glad it is here.
i have never been a jw though i was almost sucked in when i was a teenager.
that close call led me to study and research the jw doctrines and teachings so that if i do talk with them i may know their mentality a lot better.

Good observations, Terry. However, you forgot to mention that they probably count the time they spend on the internet "witnessing" to "apostates" and considering it field service.

There was an interesting book published a few years back titled THE COMMISSAR VANISHES--The Falsification of Photographs and Art In Stalin's Russia by David King. Whenever Stalin would purge a member of the Communist Party leadership, their image would vanish from official photographs. The disappearance of Commissar Barber from the JW Supreme Soviet, I mean Governing Body photograph, caused me to wonder if he was purged and sent to the Watchtower Gulag.

I think that the Jehovah's Witnesses are "religious but not spiritual."

Did you Have One " Power Controlling " Elder in your Congregations ?
by flipper ini believe many congregations had one, if not 90 % of the congregations i attended.
there seemed to always be one elder that dominated over the other elders and incredibly - in spite of the arrangement being called a " body of elders " many times it seemed that one elder would arise and take control over the other elders.
the other elders would roll over and bow essentially to these power elders.

I served on a BOE that had a controlling elder. His brother-in-law was a CO and he had friends back at the Vatican and was always calling the service desk to back him up if an issue arose in which he didn't get his way. All the other elders would give in to him so he got his way most of the time. One time he tried to interfere with a JC on which he didn't serve. I had served on that JC and we had been compassionate in our decision regarding a young couple that had got into trouble with JW rules. He complained that we had been too lenient in our decision and tried to overturn it for a harsh sentence. We stood firm and let the couple off lightly. He complained to the CO but still wasn't able to get his way.
The last two years I served as an elder our BOE became polarized with him as the reactionary and myself and two other elders as the liberals. The rest of the BOE tended to be moderates who could go either way. Later one of the liberal elders was forced off the BOE. However, after reading Crisis of Conscience, I realized the JW religion was hopeless and resigned from the BOE and faded away.

The Worst Thing About Being in your 40's
by Robdar inthe worst thing about being in your 40's is your friends start to die.
it's the first year anniversary of the passing of my friend, john kessler.
he was so tall, so blonde, so loving and so goofy.

Good to see you too Robyn. We did have some great times together. Bet the JWs at the congregation we visited that time are still wondering when we will be back. I'm sure the JWs reported at least 5 hours for the time they spent love bombing us.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Robyn. Unfortunately as we age we lose friends and family. But we should be thankful that we are still here to remember the happy times we shared with those we have lost.

"Power tends to corrupt, absolute power corrupts absolutly." So it doesn't matter which gender controls the JW Governing Body. The problem is the Watchtower power structure which is a dictatorship.
